The Bear has origins as far back as the 12th Century, but it's best known as the inn where they changed the horses on the mail run from Cardiff to Swansea. This famous Coaching Inn is steeped in history. Nowadays, this privately owned 3 star hotel is famed for its fine home-cooked food, friendly atmosphere and really good ale. During the 18th Century, Napoleon's troops were held in the 'Bear Pit' en route to London after a failed invasion at Fishguard! The Bear rests in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, surrounded by beautiful rural hills. The Brecon Beacons and the Welsh Valleys are close by, with breathtaking views. Some of the Valleys still have the mining houses visible as you drive through. The hotel is on the main high street of the historic town of Cowbridge. This chic market town boasts some fabulous boutique shops, lingering walks around the Roman wall and some of the most beautiful town-houses.

The Bear Hotel garners acclaim for its effervescent atmosphere, featuring live music and tasteful decor that contribute to a hospitable vibe. Many guests commend the diligent staff, although a few have encountered slower service. Cleanliness stands out as a strong point, with numerous travelers highlighting the pristine condition of the rooms and facilities. While the amenities, including transport links and parking, are appreciated, there's room for enhancement. Opinions on value are polarized, balancing between praise for reasonable pricing and critique over food and room costs. The rooms, noted for their cleanliness and charm, sometimes show signs of wear and lack storage space.

My husband and I stayed at The Bear for 2 nights in July 2020. As soon as we walked in, we were given a warm welcome which we really appreciated at this time. Our room was spotlessly clean and the bed was very comfortable. Breakfast was brought to our room - a huge tray of pastries, fresh fruit and yoghurt.
The courtyard of the hotel had been converted to an outdoor dining area with a marquee to protect diners from the Welsh weather. It was a bit chilly, but we layered up! Staff were mindful of the guests in nearby rooms and the dining area was cleared by 9.45 in the evening, so it was very quiet.
Cowbridge was a great place to stay for a couple of days -lots of independent shops and a beautiful physic garden which we stumbled across by accident.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Bear. We felt that all the staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome.

When we arrived, the ladies on reception apologised for the workmen building anew covered area in the courtyard. As soon as they realised our room was directly on the courtyard, and that we were staying for a few days as a mini-holiday, they immediately upgraded us to an apartment a few doors down so we wouldn't have to put up with the workmen/machinery etc.

This really made a big difference to our relaxation and pretty much guaranteed a five star review from the off!

The rest of the experience was just as nice. Reception and housekeeping very helpful; all the staff we spoke to were bright and helpful. Food in the restaurant was good, and breakfasts across the way at the Penny Farthing were great to set you up for the day - with plenty of choice, too.

We would stay again in a flash :)

We always get a good welcome at the Bear. The rooms are nice and come with a dog bed and bowl (assuming you booked a dog friendly room that is!). We get breakfast served in the bar area and they are tasty and well cooked. The dog rooms are also convenient for the park, handy if your dog likes to pop out last thing at night!

I've stayed in this hotel before some time ago so thought I would give them another go. I had hoped that they had improved the noisy floorboards in the rooms, no just the same. I stayed in room 4 terrible noisy floorboards when walking around, loud traffic noise and noisy hallway noise when people walking passed again noisy floorboards in hallway, I didn't get a good nights sleep. The food was good and service and staff also good. Breakfast is good, orders are taken at 7:30am with food being served at 7:45am Mon & Tue Breakfast in a completely different venue on Wed Thus orders taken at 7:45 food severed at 8:00amThis is far to late for business guests. I would suggest a 7am breakfast start time. A very nice touch is they have a very spacious outside undercover dining area very clean and well presented. I paid £120 per night including breakfast which I thought was to much giving the dated rooms, noise and late breakfast.

Lovely warm welcome. Comfortable room and good food. BE very careful you do not leave anything behind as the hotel won’t inform you , customer has to think back and track down missing objects. Such a lovely place but they must have a system for the information re left property.

We called in on the first day that The Bear reopened after lockdown. It was early lunchtime, weather was showery so we were able to get a table for three of us in the courtyard under a canopy. We were delighted to be having something “out” for the first time in many months. All COVID-19 precautions were taken, no issues. As we had had a late breakfast we decided to just have a cake and coffee. We all opted for the Bakewell tart with fruit coulis and a cappuccino. The cake was priced at about £4.49 or £4.59. There were no coffee prices on the small restricted menu. We all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and the cake was delicious. When I asked for the bill we were invited to pay on exit. Which was fine. We all paid individually by contactless. My bill was £10.10 and my friends’ both paid £9.80 each. I had soya milk in my coffee so that was the reason for the difference in price. It was only as we were walking back to our cars that I realised the ridiculousness of the price. We decided to shrug it off as a nice last minute treat. But the more we thought about it, the more dumbfounded we were. How could they charge about £5.80 for my coffee and about £5.50 for my friends’ coffees? I have loved having lunch at the Bear in the past. We wondered if they had upped their prices because they had lost so much business over the summer? Either way, we felt stung and thought that charging that much for a coffee ( having not put the prices on the menu) was outrageous. I haven’t been back, which is a shame because I enjoyed it there but felt really ripped off. I am just sorry that we didn’t query it at the time.

This traditional hotel in the centre of Cowbridge has excellent accommodation and adjacent car parking in their own car park. Breakfast was plentiful and good quality. My room in the annex was well appointed, comfortable and quiet at night.

Great Charity function today!
Despite the fabulous fund raising occasion, things were substandard, not least the food.
Disappointed at the standards offered. The food was below the required level to warrant the £70.00 ticket!
Not wanting to dilute the reason for the fund raising cause but The Bear should look again at the level of dishes provided.

We stayed at The Bear ,(a visit we had to defer due to COVID ) , on a Sunday including dinner and breakfast on Monday. It was lovely to be back , and to be relaxed in the knowledge that everything was Covid compliant . Loved "the cube" , what a good idea for dining . All staff were friendly and efficient, food was delicious , .......a very enjoyable stay. Will be back when next in the area and would recommend.

Took our grandfather here for Sunday lunch and we were very disappointed with the service. Once our server took our order, she never came back to check if everything was ok or if we needed another drink or more sauce. They gave us 1 gravy jug to share between the three of us which wasn’t nearly enough, and finished the majority of my main without a drink as I was unable to get a refill. We tried many times to get the attention of a staff member but none looked in our direction, the staff were just stood around chatting with each other near the bar. Long after our meal was finished we finally got someone’s attention who was serving the table next to ours, to just bring us the bill. We didn’t want to stay any longer. Very disappointing service and we won’t be back again.

Hi Swift58 Thanks for your question. Currently we sell Stowford Press on draught at £3.70 a pint As well as having a rotating still guest cider on our hand pull system this is £3.40 a pint. Today it is Farmers Pride by Gwynt y Ddraig. And if none of these take your fancy we have a good selection of bottled Ciders ranging from a scrumpy to fruity or dry. Hope this answers your query Natalie

Do you allow dogs in the hotel?
2 contributions
Hi, Many thanks for your enquiry. We welcome dogs in the bar on the left as you come into the hotel from the high street as well as having a lovely courtyard garden at the back of the Hotel. We are currently considering if we are able to allow dogs into the bedrooms, some guests are allergic and as all rooms are carpeted this can cause problems. However we are due to be replacing the flooring in our cottage soon so it may be possible then. If you could send us your email address we can advise when we have made a decision. Kind regards, Julian
