What a wonderful place, tucked away in the flatlands, serene and beautiful. The accommodation is top notch, the host's Oliver and Karin are welcoming and ensure you are well looked after. The breakfast is very yummy, and the restaurant for supper is fabulous.. Highly recommended if you wish to see heartland Belgium.
Staying at het Oud Gemeentehuis is the must! Olivier is always doing his very best for our comfort. It's a very nice place, children are welcome and the restaurant is just delicious,... We'll come back!
I would really give this 4.5 stars. If you want a quiet spot for walking, cycling, or as a base to visit Bruges, Ghent, Knokke, Sluis , then this is ideal, however if you are staying when the restaurant is closed, you will have to drive out at night to find somewhere to eat as there is not much else in this small village, particularly if weather not good for walking (small bar up road). We were disappointed that we did not know that the restaurant was not open on our first two nights but the benefit was, that there was no one else staying, so it was so tranquil. On the Friday when there were other guests, we had some noise disturbance in the night. On arrival could not get anyone to answer door so a bit worried initially that it was closed and drove away for a while and came back again. Still no sign of life, but this was soon resolved with a phone call. Room very comfortable, bed excellent, great shower, towels and toiletries. Kettle in room and not so great coffee and herbal tea and sometimes no sugar. Owners are very friendly. Breakfast amazing with lovely choices and lots of fresh fruit, yogurt, bread, cheese, ham and eggs. Dinner on Friday excellent, beautiful coquille st jacques and then cod with white asparagus. Delicious! Saturday night experience was not quite so good. Escargots were disappointing, Osso bucco was good but salad was disappointing with mainly very wet leaves and sloppy dressing. Excellent service reaction when this was mentioned, as charge was removed. Only very good places react so quickly when something is wrong. Food is not cheap but it was a good experience, generally beautifully presented and we did chose more expensive wine , so dearer bill! Where this lost half a star for us was the uncertain welcome, not knowing in advance no food would be on offer for dinner the first two nights, and the very poor internet connection, which cut out so many times each day and one phone never managed to access. Otherwise it was perfect and the hosts are very charming. Village is quaint and very close to Damme where there are other nice eateries.…
Second time at HOG... it's everything you can want: friendly welcome, plush, comfortable accommodation, genuinely good breakfast - and other touches that make you feel that the owners really care about their property and guests. The restaurant serves a small selection of Belgian classics done with extreme skill. You can cycle or walk from the front door and enjoy a small quiet part of lovely countryside, yet still be within only 10 km or Bruges or the cost. Highly recommended!
Delightful small hotel with good rooms and excellent food. The owners go out of their way to make you feel welcome. The area is great for cycling and Damme (within easy reach) has good restaurants as well.
