We felt misled by both the name (which we assumed was on the Markt square), and by the accommodation itself. Sorry, but it was disappointing.
The room was spare. Large, but uninspiring. Over rated for such accommodation.
An 8.9 rating? Where did that come from?
They advertise free wifi, but the signal in our room was extremely weak.
Our host was cheerful nonetheless, and the breakfast was good.

nice little hotel in the heart of the city Torgau, the double room was big enough for 2, the bathroom just refurbished and in a nice and modern design. We needed a second pillow, because the pillows were very flat, everything was very clean. The breakfast was fantastic, everything you need. Friendly staff.

I have waited several months before feeling able to write this review. Basically I have positive feelings about the facilities at this hotel, but nevertheless had a rather unhappy experience because of the attitude of the staff. On balance, there is more to a good hotel than nice clean rooms and a tasty breakfast, and one of the first extra criteria is that they treat all guests fairly and courteously. Unfortunately, Hotel-Pension zum Markt falls down for me on this aspect. Whilst the hotel’s attitude was certainly influenced by the behaviour of previous guests, I would also ask the hotel and anyone else reading this review to consider the basic principles of etiquette when running a hotel. My reason for staying here was that I was attending the punk-rock festival that is an annual event in the town. Normally, like the majority of attendees, I would stay in the camping area, but on this occasion, I decided it was prudent to stay in a hotel because of a bad back, which had been troubling me greatly, and must have been obvious from the very moment I arrived. I had reserved a room using an internet booking agency, and because the hotel (in fact the whole town) was already almost full, I settled for the only room available, which in fact was a suite theoretically for four persons, at about double the rate I’d normally have expected to pay. I accepted this with good grace. On arrival, the hotel staff were immediately suspicious that I really intended to bring back extra people from the festival, which was not at all my plan. They also asked me to guarantee that I would not leave the room in a dirty condition and that I would remove my footwear upon entering, which again I would do routinely in any case. The check-in clerk then phoned the owner/manager to discuss my case. Not realizing that I understood some German, I overheard her assuring the person on the other end of the line that I seemed ‘a good boy’. She then made me repeat my assurances, and finally agreed to check me in. Then she asked why I had booked such a large room, and I explained the reason. She then said that in fact there was a smaller room available, and would I mind changing, just in case there was a larger group that needed the bigger room. Since I had no need of such a large room I gladly agreed. However, when she asked me to pay, she explained that I would still have to pay the more expensive rate for the larger room, because I had booked online. Thus, I enabled the hotel to make extra money, whilst gaining not even the slightest discount in return, which seems a bad business policy. I enjoyed my stay in the hotel and festival, and dutifully removed my boots upon entering the room, leaving them in the room’s entrance lobby, even though they were not even slightly dirty. Still, on the second evening I noticed a doormat had been placed outside of my room, clearly enjoining me to remove my boots and leave them outside in the stairwell. Since they were the only shoes I had with me, I ignored the hint and placed them as before, just at the door inside the entrance On balance, I felt quite insulted and wondered how they treat other guests. Thus, I am simply unable to recommend it, despite the excellent facilities it provides. I hope the hotel will at least have the courtesy to respond to this review, which I feel is fair and accurate A hotel has a perfect right to choose its clientele. But this needs to be made clear on its website and other publicity, and certainly on the website of any booking agency they use. If ‘travellers attending the town’s music festival are not welcome’ had been posted there, I would of course have made other arrangements. I would certainly advise anyone else attending such events in Torgau to do so.

They have managed to squeeze a lot of rooms into a lovely old building by extending into a rear courtyard and old stables etc. The result is very attractive and characterful. In addition to this the place is very well run by extremely pleasant staff and management. Our room was not large but comfortable. The hotel is very well located near the lovely central square. Breakfast was pleasant in a nice room but some of the salad etc was a little 'tired' in the heat. Overall a very good choice in a really lovely town. We would come back.

We were very impressed by the warm welcome as we arrived at the hotel. A member of staff with good English was found to welcome us and explain the facilities.
The hotel has an entrance on Backerstrasse close to the market square but the main entrance is around the corner in a quieter side-street. It is an old building with some steep stairs to rooms in the main house.
The attractions were within easy walking distance, even the rather sad sight of the two bears in the castle moat.
We found the breakfast well laid out and ample in amount with hot, cold, sweet and savoury choices in the buffet.
