The Pelican Alvor was previously the Luna Alvor but has since been taken over by new management after it had been shut down during the pandemic. You can see that they've been working hard to bring it back to a good standard, reseeding and top dressing the lawns, upgrading the bedrooms and replacing all the decking around the pool. Our holiday company had offered us the Yellow Alvor Garden next door on an all inclusive basis but we decided to stay put as we preferred the studio layout and facilities. We are so glad we did.
The room was large, well presented and comfortable overlooking the pool area, The beds were great, large and the mattresses were sufficiently soft and yet supportive. The room was cleaned daily with fresh towels also being provided and the wifi was excellent throughout our stay.
Breakfast was perfect for us - although the choice was the same each morning and relatively limited compared to larger hotels, it was fresh and perfectly adequate for us to start the day with. It was more of a Continental breakfast with the cooked elements being limited to eggs, bacon, sausages and mushrooms or baked beans but perfectly adequate to start the day with. The pastel da nata tarts were great (a type of Portuguese custard tart) and now are a firm favourite of ours with a morning coffee.
The hotel was spotlessly clean throughout and peaceful. There wasn't any evening entertainment and dinner wasn't available but they are looking to change this in the future.
The decking around the main and childrens pool was just about completed when we left, with the work being carried out not being as intrusive as we had originally feared, so doubtless the loungers will be returned to the poolside shortly. During our stay they were on the grass which was sloping which wasn't ideal when sunbathing, particularly as you tracked the sun during the day.
Overall we loved our stay here and this is a hotel that is on the up if you are looking for a quiet retreat in a well priced, comfortable, peaceful hotel with lovely staff. Would certainly return when we next visit Alvor.
We had a toddler and an 8 month old, the hotel seems to cater more for older couples but we had such a fantastic time. The pool area is lovely, and the 2 bed room we had on top floor was absolutely huge and very clean with a massive balcony. Lunch and drinks were inexpensive and good quality.
Location is good, only about 8 mins from the water.
Downsides were the snackbar at the pool was closed for duration of our stay which meant a decent trek up to the hotel any time you wanted anything which wasn't ideal with kids.
There seemed to be an old wooden hot tub and decking on our balcony which was nailed shut and had been that way for some years, was a bit of an eyesore.
Breakfast was very basic.
The hotel wanted to charge for use of the safe in the room, I was very disappointed with this, the safes are in the room anyway and it just seemed like gouging.

We will be back next year and many more to come.

We had a ground floor room
,clean plenty of space plus all you need for a self catering holiday.
The hotel itself is spotless fully air conditioned (as were the rooms) with a good selection of food at breakfast plus a great snack menu during the day and not too expensive.
There’s a large decking area attached to the hotel with tables and chairs where you can have a beer or a bite to eat in the shade.
You have to walk down some steps and then down a lawned area to get to the pool, the pool itself is adequate and is also surrounded by decking my only gripe was the selfish people who reserved beds then appeared mid afternoon to collect there towels and yes they were English, not the hotels fault.
The location is about 15 minutes walk to harbour a little less to the centre and about 5 minutes walk to the supermarket.
On the day of our departure we missed breakfast as we were leaving early but the hotel kindly knocked us up a small packed lunch to eat at our leisure, thanks for that.
All in all we had a very enjoyable stay at the Pelican.

I would certainly come back and stay again at the Pelican. I really do feel like I've had a refreshing break.

Balcony was huge and clean. If you are on the front you only get the sun in the evening and there is only a view of the car park so if you intend to stay in the apparent during the day and sunbathe on the balcony you'll be better off with a room at the back overlooking the pool.
Air con was good but worth noting that although others say it is very quiet, it's only the vent in the room that's quite as each room has a large air con unit with a fan on the balcony and when you switch on the air con this fires up and sounds like an aircraft engine.
Only negative about the room was that they say you get a limited supply of hot water per day, we only had one shower each, so 2 showers a day and the water was already going cold by the end of the second shower.
The staff were extremely friendly but as everything was provided and we had no issues we only needed to speak to them on check in and out.
Great location - about 8 minutes walk to a small supermarket and 12-15 to the town Alvor.
Alvor has plenty of restaurants and tourist shops selling the sort of stuff nobody wants but buys as a souvenir.
Plenty of free parking.
The location was great for us, a 15 minute walk to Alvor, under 10 minutes to the Pingo supermarket and 5 minutes from The Jolly (a pub we made our own and knew the owner from last year).
The reception and bar staff in Pelican were excellent and very friendly. The food in the bar was good and reasonably priced.
The room was the same as last year and an excellent size, a TV you can swivel round to watch in bed and an excellent little kitchen with everything we needed.
Our issues were with the quality of the daily cleaning, it was poor.
The floor wasn't mopped and our feet ended up filthy (which then gets transferred to the bed) or in my case had white socks that were black underneath. There was a general lack of care which was a real shame as the main areas of the hotel were constantly cleaned.
Also our bin under the sink wasn't emptied at least 3 times and we took to leaving the rubbish bag out to ensure it was taken.
This year there was entertainment from 5 until 7 one evening on the terrace, this was well received and maybe the management should do more of this in future.
The hotel WiFi was patchy at best and our phones kept being disconnected.
The pool area is pretty good but could do with a bit of TLC, too often we struggled to get a lounger while others were "reserved" by people who never returned for 2 to 3 hours. A few more loungers wouldn't go amiss or a regular check to remove towels when the loungers aren't used for long periods.
We will definitely return if the standard of cleaning improves as this is an excellent hotel with bags of potential and friendly staff.

The breakfasts are amazing, with all the staff being helpful and friendly. In fact, throughout the hotel all the staff are just so friendly and they can't do enough for you.
This year we were on the first floor instead of the ground floor like last year, but the lifts are there for you almost immediately, whether you're going up or down.
The hotel never seemed too busy, the pool was rarely occupied when we wanted to use it, and it seems they've got a handle on rude people trying to reserve sun beds this year.
The location is great, it's a short walk to anywhere in Alvor, or if you hire a car as we did, you can get either local or straight onto the motorway very quickly. There is a supermarket round the corner and nice restaurants close by.
We really hope to return soon!
"Don't overlook this hotel if you like self catering, it was perfect with a supermarket nearby."Read full review
