The hotel's diverse amenities, including a well-maintained golf course and a large pool, receive praise, although opinions on the value and modernity of facilities vary. My first visit here was 34 years ago. At the time it was the most luxurious hotel I had stayed at. Since then I have stayed at hotels more worthy of the word luxurious and the label 5 star; the Fullerton Singapore, the Peninsula and the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong and the Langham in Melbourne to name a few. However, I have returned here 5 more times in that intervening period. Yes, the hotel could do with some renovation, some carpets in the general areas are threadbare but despite this the rooms, while simply decorated with white washed walls and the traditional red floor tiles, have had replacement bathrooms, new comfy beds and lovely crisp white linen and fluffy towels. If you want modern, minimalist and brand new then look elsewhere. If, like me, you enjoy exchanging stories with the 38 year veteran doorman, Carlos, about sharing the pool with Rocco and Charles Forte all those years ago, then this is the hotel for you. Chintzy chairs and sofas in the lounge but what can beat a glass of port and watching the sun go down over the magnificent pool? After 30 years of many visits to the Algarve coming here is a special treat and always feels like coming home. Apparently there are plans to refurbish and that would make Penina very special again.
I should add, in response to other comments, that we did not experience a 5pm check in. We arrived at 11am and told the room would be ready at 2pm which it was. We were offered the use of the golf changing rooms complete with towels and showers and Carlos stored our luggage while we went to the pool.
We relied on the hotel to book taxis for us as we found the Uber drivers had a nasty habit of cancelling the ride, presumably because they found an alternative fare nearer to their location.

Dear Repeated Guest, Thank you so much for your return and for taking the time to share your most recent experience with other travelers. To see returning guests year after year is very reassuring for the entire team, it is always nice to see familiar faces out and about the resort. Carlos our veteran doorman was overjoyed to learn of your kind mentioning and sends his regards. As testament to our strive, we assure you that an extensive plan for renovation is in the cards for the foreseeable future. We do our best to tackle situations around the resort whenever occupancy is low. We look forward to the pleasure of welcoming you back on your next visit to the Algarve.

Well a group of us (8) in all travelled over the last week in January this year, something we have done for the past 6 years with the exception of the Co-vid pandemic. We stayed in 4 twin bedroom rooms overlooking the pool area, these rooms were excellent and were well serviced by the staff, changed the towels twice a day and anything else that needed changing. We stayed on a B/B format and this also included a meal in the Legril restaurant of which we were allowed to choose whatever we wanted including drinks to which the hotel paid €33 to each of us towards the cost of the evening. Food was excellent and cooked to order and served by well trained staff. Breakfast was good and there was more than enough to eat, either pre-cooked or made to order, eat what you wanted and however much you wanted. Sir Henry Cotton golf course was excellent for the time of year. The greens were first class and really true and exceedingly fast, the size of them was something else. Some pitch marks left by players in front of us who didn’t seem to bother, however we repaired them. Green staff were there every day making sure everything was ok. Bunkers were good and again people with small feet seemed not to like raking them. Fairways considering the traffic used were good but did need a bit if of attention. Tee’s need some work on them but was not a problem. People have mentioned the property needs updating, so does everything in the world so get on with it. We will certainly be visiting again next January to enjoy our stay here and playing an exceptional golf course. Staff were excellent and done everything you needed doing.

Very nice hotel needed some TLC, we had a mini bar fridge which was not plugged in, I pulled it out to plug in because we buy our own drink to keep cool and it was not very clean. Expected complimentary bottle of water which previous reviews said they had none was in our room so we went down to the bar to purchase a bottle of water which cost 6 euros. Breakfast was excellent with a great choice, reception staff were vague depending who you spoke to, we booked an Italian meal on site only to be told on the night the restaurant was not open on that night so we had to pay 15 euros into Alvor and back to get something to eat bearing in mind it’s only 3.5 miles each way .When we challenged the person on reception he denied any knowledge so it’s still a mystery as to where we were booked in? Could not fault the waiters/waitresses or the cleaning staff who where very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. People who had been going there for years put it down to very bad management and the hotel being understaffed . The hotel was too isolated for us and taxis were very expensive also we hired a car from Alvor car hire which the hotel recommended” do not use” please next review we had a serious problem with them which the hotel was copied into an email to which we received no response. We would no be returning again unfortunately.

We have just spent 5 days at Penina. We have stayed here many times and I have to say it was the best we had experienced.
Firstly the golf. We only played the Championship course and it continued to be one of our favourites. The greens were immaculate, apart from the usual pitch marks on the greens left by inconsiderate golfers.
The general condition of the course was very good and considering the time of year was more than enjoyable. Great weather of course helped
Secondly the hotel. It was very quiet and the staff on reception and the doorman were extremely helpful and professional. The breakfast as always was great
We stayed in a Mountain view room and it was very comfortable. We normally take a Pool view room and the only improvement would have been the sun would have been beaming down on the balcony should we have taken the latter but it didn't detract from how comfy it was. Spotless clean with a fridge and ask for a kettle if you prefer tea. We don't drink coffee.
Now this was the best bit. We have never eaten in Le Grill restaurant as we always assumed it was a bit stuffy, it was relaxing and far from stuffy. However, as The Henry Cotton bar was closed for private parties we ate in Le Grill. Historic. The food was fantastic and Nelson , our waiter, could not do enough for us. The first evening they didn't have the wine I had ordered. He provided us with a great local alternative. On the 3rd and last time we ate there, he found the wine and as we sat down, the waitress said that Nelson had found us a bottle and it was open on our table. That's what I call first class service.
The prices were not that expensive either. For example:

Bottle of great Red, Bread Rolls, an appetiser, a main course, a couple of Portuguese tarts (no jokes please) and a glass of Port, was 88 euros all in. We went into Alvor and it was cheaper at the hotel and you didn't need to get a taxi or drive in.

In summary, this isn't a place for groups of young golfers who want to go on the lash and play golf like you would do at Vilamoura. It's charm is the hotel, peace and quiet and a great golf course, with superb food.

Thanks to everyone at Penina for making our stay perfect.

We booked a last minute week at the Penina Hotel expecting to experience a tranquil break in traditional surroundings inspired by Sir Henry Cotton the world famous golfer and golf course architect.
What we actually got was luxury of the very highest standard in a superb establishment enhanced by an amazing team of staff complimented by food, drink and service to match.
Every member of the team seemed to go the extra mile to ensure we had the greatest time.
The help and advice from Christie the guest relations manager was exceptional, her knowledge of the area ensured that we visited all of the relevant places of interest..Luis at the beach bar was also very helpful and provided us with ice cold water on what was an extremely hot day and invited us to share it with other guests on the courtesy bus.
Berly the room cleaner again could not have been more enthusiastic about her job and really made us feel at home by regularly enquiring if there was anything in addition to her normal duties she could help with.
The pool supervisor Nuno was like an Olympic athlete flying around the pool area making sure everything was in order.
Reception staff were terrific.
All in all a fabulous hotel with employees of the very highest standard..
We cannot wait to make a return visit.

Intended to be a happy return visit after some years turned into a hugely disappointing experience for myself and my wife.
Hotel is certainly not 5 star compared to others in Portugal;
- bedroom acceptable but bathroom needs work on water egress from under bath after showers - toilet tissue seems to be rationed.
Breakfast hot buffet not very enticing but selection of fruit and cereals fine.
Two restaurant options available for evening meals - bar food or one other depending on the day of the week!
Bar food menu very limited and the main restaurant very overpriced. Food quality acceptable.
In general and with a couple of exceptions, we found that staff were a tad rude/abrupt on occasions (reception, night bar floor staff and golf shop in particular).
Golf:
Having obviously suffered from a very hot summer the course was in appalling condition with fairways and rough indistinguishable on some holes. The greens were also in very poor condition.
The bad state of the course was sad to see as previous experience was so positive. We did however play one other nearby course where the greens were magnificent and fairways passable so I don’t accept Penina claim that nothing could prevent the poor state of their course given the summer weather. BTW, weather was bad!

One of the best hotels in Portugal that we have stayed in. We were surprised at reviews on the Jet2 website, indicating 'somewhat dated' and must correct in that the hotel clearly intends to reflect the internal atmosphere and surroundings of an up-market, private members golf club. The public areas and rooms were immaculate, well maintained and met all the requirements of modern day, 5 star living with air-con throughout. Special mention is made of the Huge pool which enjoys direct sunlight on all sides and also the
4 restaurants. The extensive morning buffet served all tastes and nationalities and the 'Grill' deserves mention for serving top class gourmet food served in appropriate surroundings. The staff and customer relations officer were particularly helpful in meeting our special assistance needs with a suitable 'disabled' room (of which there are only two) and the resort overalll presented little problem for the wheelchair user. The golf course showed the considerable effects of the current drought with fairways being brown and devoid of grass. the greens, however, were immaculate ( Players currently deserve the discount we obtained on the standard green fee). Overall the golf experience was a a disappointment - but, to be fair, understandable in the circumstances. Would we visit again? Absolutely!!.

As you will see from past posts, Penina is a favourite of mine.

Yes it still needs investment (and there were signs that’s happening) and they have been fortunate in a wet Winter so the Championship course was in a vastly improved state from last year.

However this is still a great venue. Excellent staff, lovely Studio bedroom for us, and great food. The Grill was as good as i have known it in fact.

Throw in some golf (one of the best courses you will play for the diverse layout that Henry Cotton put down in the 1960's) and one of the best pools you will ever go to, then it’s a winner from the start.

As last time we were there partly for the Penina Golf week that has been going for many years in different ways, and is a great mix of competition golf and social fun.

Two reasonably serious rounds and two more fun rounds is the format with two meals, prizes and cocktails also added. The package will include your accommodation and breakfast.

What’s not to like.

My wife does not play the golf but does all the social side as well as enjoying herself at the pool etc.

It’s still not back to “the glory years” of times past but of course Covid and some under investment has had its say there. So long as there is a plan to keep improving the entire property then great.

Yes, there still needs tiding up. Perhaps some flowers or something in the old Chipping green down to the Driving Range. Refresh the course signs and paint the hazard stakes. Repaint the outside and keep it as white as possible (some of this was going on as we left actually) and a replacement of some of the furniture in the Cocktail bar would all help.

So long as there is a constant feel of improvement and refresh all will be good and guests will see that care is being taken.

I will keep coming back as long as I can.

JJW just keep taking care of this fantastic venue and the staff. The staff really make the place of course.

Looking forward to the 2025 Tournament week. Now if i could just get my putting better........

Our first visit to Penina and it was not cheap, so we arrived with high expectations. The charming young man on Reception informed us that we had been upgraded to a Junior Suite. Hmmm. Our room was very small, with a "mezzanine" area which led onto the tiniest balcony I had ever seen - there was room for just two chairs, nothing else. In retrospect we should have immediately refused the room, declined the "upgrade" and asked for a standard room with a decent balcony.
There was no printed hotel information, just a very superficial information system on the tv, which provided none of the essential detail we needed as first timers at the hotel. Such as the need to book well in advance if we wished to have an evening meal in the hotel.
We discovered that our first choice restaurant - the Italian - was closed, ( in fact only a maximum of two of the four were open on any evening) so we enquired at Reception about the cost of a meal in the buffet restaurant . The Receptionist asked if we wanted to book a table, but we said we would choose a time and book later, something he didn't question. When we went back to book, we were told that the buffet restaurant was full and our only option was to eat in the a la carte Grill Restaurant. Not really what we wanted.
She then made a great show of "persuading" the Maitre d to fit us in.
The Grill Restaurant was in no way full. The food was good and well served, but even choosing the simplest menu choices, we ran up a bill in excess of 90 Euros when all we wanted was a light meal.
We didn't return, but on a couple of nights during our stay, the Grill Restaurant was actually the only option available for evening dining!!
In a 5* hotel I expected a high degree of service in our room, but although the towels were replaced daily, it was 4 nights before our bed linen was changed. Really not acceptable.
We learned that in a hotel normally staffed by 40 personnel, the hotel was running with a skeleton staff of just 17.
I have no complaints at all about the great team who looked after us so very well in the bars and restaurants. Also the charming man who looked after the swimming pool clearly took great pride in his work.
I will write a separate review about the two golf courses.

Dear jilldH6224US, We have read your views and opinions on tripadvisor further to your stay, and your comments about our services and facilities were shared with the Management team. This was your first visit, and unfortunately, we were not entirely able to meet your expectations. We sincerely apologize for this less positive first impression. May we clarify that the room allocated to you does have a smaller balcony, but offers wonderful views, from the 4th floor, over the golf course and swimming pool. Those are the studio rooms, and are more expensive than the classic or standard rooms. For a future visit, please kindly inform about us about your accommodation preferences, and instead of a studio, the team will ensure they allocate you a different type of room. Due to the pandemic the Hospitality Industry has implemented measures to minimize the risk of spreading the virus. One of the actions taken at Hotels was related to “points of contact”, and all written information was removed from the rooms. As an alternative, we have the Information menu on the TV, with room service menu, directory of services and local area information. Additionally, our Reception and Guest Relations are available to assist you. We regret to learn about some flaws related to the housekeeping service, and we are investigating with our housekeeping team what may have happened. Please accept our apologies. We feel honored when we read your observations about the staff that looked after you in the bars and restaurants, and also about the pool manager, who takes pride in his work. Many of those mentioned have been here for years, and truly do their best in providing great services. We hope that you will give us another opportunity to greet you at Penina. At our hotel, we are continuously looking to improve our overall services and guest’s satisfaction, therefore we would like to invite you to share your comments and preferences further with us at the following e-mail: penina@jjwhotels.com. Kind regards Guest Relations

Back at Penina again first week in November. Reading the hyper-critical reviews always amuses me. As a golfing couple we are paying £70 each per day for bed & breakfast and unlimited golf. The course is recovering quickly from an extremely dry summer but is absolutely fine. A number of dried out areas on some fairways. Just play winter rules within a few yards ?? The bunkers need lots more sand and the greens take a heavy beating with a lot of unrepaired pitch marks on naturally soft turf but for that price on a great layout, really what do people expect? It's fantastic value.
The hotel is tired, public areas haven't seen any new decor, probably ever and some of the older staff have obviously run out of the patience needed for the job but it kind of adds to the charm.
Expect to pay €3.50 for a small coffee but go to the grill restaurant and eat very good quality fillet steak for €29 (£25). The service is a touch chaotic but genuinely friendly (except some of the oldies) but again, it's got character. Meanwhile back in the UK, you get a surly spotty or collagen filled teenager with absolutely zero interest in you or your experience and pay 50% more...
The hotel needs money spent on it and it's clientele are mainly middle aged/senior golfers at this time of year but it's great value and anyone expecting much more for the money is deluded. Plus its 22c and sunny while there's people in UK getting themselves washed away in floods.....

There’s a timetable at reception but you have to book it. Our experience wasn’t great as the pick-up from the beach just simply didn’t arrive so we had to get a taxi instead.
