We stayed here last month having booked a deluxe balcony sea and pool view room through the website as Pestana guest club members. (I'm not sure whether there is any point in being members to be honest as we couldn't use the points we had accrued towards the bill here and were told belatedly by reception that we should have phoned Pestana when we booked to do so). If we went again (for reasons below) we would request a sea facing room with balcony at the end of the corridor to the right of reception. Our ten night holiday here was very relaxing but there is a nagging feeling that this hotel really doesn't know what it wants to be! Its location directly on the beach is fantastic: definitely, the 'usp' of the Alvor South Beach is its location and the comparative tranquility here (while being close to everything else) and the possibility to relax completely. When compared to the Dom João next door, it is clearly more niche and laid back. We requested a quiet room but could always hear the muzak from the dining area / bar below and on one occasion, a live 'singer'. Mercifully, the muzak ceased every night at 23:00. Others have mentioned that you are required to sign on arrival to agree not to reserve sun loungers. Clearly, this is not observed (a packet of babywipes and sun lotion were placed on one lounger all day and nobody came to claim them neither were they removed by staff) although we never had a problem getting one - getting one with an umbrella might be more problematic. The 4 poster sun loungers were reserved early on every day. A call out to the staff here (especially those involved with breakfast and in the dining area) - they were all fantastic and a credit to the hotel. A note to the hotel management: why is a service charge added automatically to every food bill? I would occasionally have liked to have shown my appreciation to the wonderful staff by offering them a cash tip but couldn't. Most people do not like an automatically added service charge and prefer to show their appreciation directly in a way that ensures that the actual staff themselves see the benefit. We have given four stars as we had a relaxing, enjoyable stay here (the room 266 was quirky with a strange picture of six girls floating around a fountain on the ceiling!!) but this hotel could make itself into a 5 star relaxation destination with a little more focus on its core identity and - again as others have alluded - a bit of a tidy up i.e. cleaning the communal carpets.

Funky little place on a fabulous beach. Very modern design, open plan public areas. Very Premier inn its way.
Bedrooms are large and well appointed although no wardrobes as such just a hanging rail and loads of shelving. We had a ground floor room with a lovely balcony looking towards the sea but spoilt by two shabby looking sun beds. Housekeeping kept the room clean and tidy. The ceiling was plastered with a huge photo of bathing beauties in a pool, very kinky.
The Bathroom was a challenge it is a shower over a bath. The bottom of the bath is about 10cm off the ground so you not only stepping over the side of the deep bath but also up. There were no grab handles to hold. No anti slip mat. Not a good design if you have any mobility issues like dodgy knees or ankles. I felt very insecure using it. The shower head was on a flexi pipe with a water saving vari head to adjust the meagre flow. However, the main bath water flow tap to the bath gushed like a torrent.
The taps on the sink were a joke. No water flow, it came out in a fine sprinkle with no power. Hot water was an impossible challenge in the sink. A real struggle to use the sink when shaving. There was no plug in the sink either. Plus the soap dispenser was on the wrong end of the vanity unit to the sink. I totally understand that the Algarve has a major water shortage but the sink was a joke.
Breakfast was fine. Great omelettes made to order. But the rest of the food, pool side in the hotel and Sea Deck restaurant was extremely poor compared to the local alternatives.
Pools were clean but no grab rail on the steps leading into the pools.
The bar shut at 11pm and the staff were out the door within a few minutes, doors shut, music off, lights out.
Taxis to the town were easily available. About 5-7 euros. Loads of fabulous restaurants can be found there. The fish restaurants here are stunning.
We found the hotel staff helpful enough but i felt they were not loving the job.
Overall i give the hotel 7 out of 10. I found the pestana praia a better hotel a few years ago, but Alvor is stunning. The beaches, the restaurants and the town the reason we have returned quite a few times over the years.

We had a great stay at this hotel. The hotel itself is right beside the beach and the hotel, pools and grounds around it are really well maintained. The hotel is only 2 to 3 stories in height with about 80 bedrooms. The hotel and bedrooms are very clean and the household team seemed to be on the go all the time.
Check in was very efficient on arrival and our room was ready. We had a suite which is a sitting room, bathroom and bedroom plus balcony. Quite spacious. Bed was comfortable and room had everything we needed. Everything in good condition. Plenty of tv channels.
Breakfast was very good. Great choice of fresh fruit, pastries, breads, etc. plenty of hot options too. The staff at breakfast were very friendly and helpful and deserve a special mention. Breakfast area is at reception but looking out to pools.
Pool area is well laid out with three pools and plenty of loungers. No issues getting one at any time of the day. A few more parasols would be good. Plenty of space so no sense that you were too close to other guests
Hotel is a 10/15 minute walk from Alvor old town. Nice walk along g boardwalk. You can rent sun-loungers and parasol on beach for €15 for day. Beach is nice.
I definitely enjoyed my stay here and we will book again.

My first issue was around cost having compared the costs online using a third party and directly I decided to book directly as it was slightly cheaper but upon arriving I was hit with addtional local taxes making it 125 euros more when these were included in the third party cost. Tried to discuss with the hotel but they deflect the issue to the central reservations team and they simply wiggled out of their best rate guarantee policy. I spent alot of time on emails explaining the issue but they wouldn't listen they wasn't interested. The pictures of the hotel make it look alot lot better than it is in all apsects, hotel, the rooms and the pool area. The staff are very friendly and helpful but the hotel is at best of a three star standard at best not four star. They don't have sufficient number of sun longers and or umberllas for guests so you are forced to go to the beach and hire at addtional cost. They also take your towels from the sun loungers around the pool when you go out for lunch at the Sea Deck bar just a few minutes walk away becuase the menu in the hotel is very fast food nothing healthly on the menu just fried food, burgers and chips etc hence aside breakfast not many guests eat at the hotel for lunch and or dinner. The AC in the room was not good enough to cool the small suite room 30m2 and it appears to be switched off by the staff or automatically switched off centrally as it was never on upon returning to the room and wasn't good enoug to cool the room wen you were in it. The bath leaked every time upon showering onto the floor and the bedroom curtains continued to fall down or become unhooked making it a pain to keep fixing them back up and very bright in the room. The pool towels are very small and of poor quality take your own would be advised. They provide two bottles of water on day one but never replaced them during the stay. The bar closes at 11pm but very few people are in the bar at this time anyway. the TV in the room is internet based and as such very slow and the contol doesn't always connect. Breakfast well you get the smallest glasses possible for juice never a good sign and as such need four glasses to get a normal size glass. The hot food selection is limited and not of a high standard and well it isn't hot food because it only has two heat lamps over alot of dishes and as such the food is cold or luke warm at best. The standard of food hygeniue would be great with this set up, please see the picture. A friend recommeded the hotel but it won't be a recommendation from me nor would I return. At 350 euros a night you could get far better elsewhere.

On arrival everything looked nice our room wasn’t ready so left our phone number so they could contact us. Staff were great on the whole very professional and with a few exceptions seemed pleased to be doing this type of work. Our room was first floor facing away from the pools room 112 with a sea view. Beware if you leave the patio doors open you will be inundated with mosquitoes. This wasn’t very nice at all. Generally the suite was decent enough plenty of space with a sliding door in between the two rooms. The bathroom had an in bath shower but found this to be very slippery and dangerous. We asked for a rubber bath mat but they were unable to supply so we used a hand towel daily so wife didn’t fall. We think a walk in shower would have been a better option. The swimming pools and surrounding areas needed a lot to be desired. The pool overflow areas were absolutely filthy in a lot of areas and think this needs daily cleaning. Above the water line the grouting and tiles in places were again absolutely filthy. Most of the sun beds were in poor condition and in need of replacement as they sagged and slats were broken or damaged. The day beds were filthy first thing in the morning making our towels filthy dirty perhaps a full clean daily would be of benefit. The bar and café/restaurant we found this to be rather expensive for the quality of food it served. I.e we asked for a chicken burger with chips one day and we’re served with 3 of the smallest thinnest slices of chicken on top of a ring of pineapple (see picture).
The location if the hotel was good you are able walk along the board walk into alvor and if you decide not to walk the 10 minutes back there are plenty of taxis.
This hotel was a 4* , personally I don’t think the quality reflects this rating. We have decided we shan’t return I’m sorry to say, Nb the bar closes at 23:00.

We stayed at Pestana South Beach at the start of October and whilst our stay was fine the hotel could make many improvements and I hope the Management will listen to some of the comments on here. Firstly the positives...the staff were good. The bedroom was good with a large balcony and kept really clean throughout the week. We were told there was a welcome drink in our room which ended up being 2 child size cartons of orange juice and two bottles of water. The water was appreciated but seriously unless a small bottle of sparkling wine is going to be provided the welcome drink is quite embarrassing and unnecessary. The towels in the room and for the pool need replacing, they are old, grey and the pool towels are too small. The sunbeds are the worst sunbeds I have ever seen ...old, scruffy...need upgraded urgently. The breakfast was adequate but could do better. The fruit selection was excellent as was the pastry selection. The hot food was luke warm. There are eggs available to order, I ordered a poached egg one morning and a fried egg the next morning and both arrived cold. My hubbys omelette was warm. Surely a cooking station would be a good idea as well as improving the hot plates/lamps to keep the food warm. The hotel is approx. 15 min walk to Alvor centre which was a lovely walk along the boardwalk. Alvor has lovely restaurants. Overall we had a good holiday but we would probably not return to South Beach. It is more like a 3 star hotel until improvements are made which is a pity as it has a beautiful location.

Big disappointment. We do not recommend this hotel that is nothing more than an upmarket B and B with a pool. Lunch was available Did not get sea view that was booked and paid for. First room only a hand shower too high to reach and the bath had very high sides , I could not climb over with my short legs Changed rooms. Walk In shower leaked badly but repaired. No plug for basin making wet shave very difficult. Bed felt like lying on plank made back painful.Storage space unusable , too high with only 8 coat hangers for clothes. Only one bedside table.Lounge has plastic patio chair, settee is a bed impossible to sit on. Poor breakfast , cooked items cold. After signing a form to always remove belongings when leaving sunbed , nobody did,and at times the pool area deserted all afternoon but all beds claimed. Only very few sun shades. Hotel restaurant outside the grounds. with small evening menu that didn't change and no daily special. I asked for a hamburger but was told this was not served after 6 pm. Inquired at reception about the advertised free shuttle to Portimao but told there wasn't one More than 5 mins walk into Alvor.The boardwalk very dark at night although we didn't feel threatened On check in we were told the mini bar was fully stocked and replacements were payable. the mini bar actually contained only 2 small bottles of water and 2 child size cartons of fruit juice The hotel needs a complete renovation

Very nice hotel which is very well managed. Lovely near the beach location. All the staff we met seemed very happy in their jobs, always a smile and very helpful, the place was very clean, bedroom and communal areas.Breakfast was excellent, everything you could want was on offer, and ran from 7.30 am to 11.am. We had a deluxe sea view room with balcony looking out to sea which was an excellent location, room 228, glass fronted balcony so great view, pleanty of space as our room had an attached ante room with sofa/bed and another TV. Overall a very nice mid size hotel with good facilites. Spa was closed (not quite sure why) but it didn't detract from our visit overall. Just a couple of things I would mention, the menu in the bar area for light meals only had one menu for our whole stay 10 day stay which became monotonous, consequently we had lunch out more often than we would have, also bar ran out of 'tonic' (??) for the last 3 days which seemed a strange thing to run out of! Overall very good, would visit again.

Beautifully positioned hotel for beach lovers and around a 20 minute walk to Alvor town centre with its plethora of restaurants with most selling an array of fish dishes. This hotel is one of a type with its “Ikea” style decor everywhere. We arrived around 2 pm but the room was not ready. Some 2 1/2 hours later we asked reception again and were told our cases had been taken to our room. Now, my Wife and I are in our 70’s and we were confronted with a heavily steep staircase from the entrance door to access the 1st floor room. Not something to look forward to several times each day! Then shock horror, although a nice big room, NO BALCONY. There are some 10 or so sea view rooms without a balcony. Staff are generally good and rooms are kept very clean. Breakfast is varied with the usual breads,meats,cheeses and cereals with the option of a cooked meal with choice of eggs. The pool area is generally decking with 3 small oblong pools. What may be a big problem is that only around half the sun beds have an associated parasol. Cost of these on the beach range from 15 to 20 Euros per day. Overall, not an exciting hotel, but quite adequate.

So many reasons why we should have rated the hotel excellent but just a few things let it down. We loved the hotel in many ways, compact and only two floors, very laid back and tranquil with no reps trying to drag you off your sunbed every 10 minutes to join a daft game. Our pool view first floor room was spacious and comfortable without having a great view of the pool .Wifi , safe and pool towels not something you get at every hotel free of charge. The breakfast room area we thought was excellent although maybe in July/August could get a little cramped. The 3 girls who mainly waited on at breakfast we couldnt rate higher. Nothing was too much trouble for them and always with a smile. They brought Latte or Cappucino to the table if you preferred that and helped with requests for different eggs/omlettes. Those 3 girls definately got top marks. The pool area is lovely set in a pretty garden area. Plenty sunbeds well spaced out. A walk along the boardwalk past the scrubland to the beach about a 100 yards away. 15 euros for beach bed hire. So why not the top rating? Its always the small things. For the first few days we were invited to help ourselves to the filter coffee. Around day 5 the breakfast supervisor snapped at us and said we shouldnt be helping ourselves she would bring the coffee. She was actually quite unpleasant about it. 10 minutes later she still hadnt brought the coffee so we asked one of the young girls who responded immediately. The hotel website offers a paid shuttle bus service. We never saw one and the reception staff didnt know anything about it. So why offer it? The first wednesday it was apparently Happy Hour, every wednesday the barman told us. We went the following Wednesday, no Happy Hour, finished till 2023. It was only early September. The Star Decks restaurant has a very limited menu and is very short of trained staff. We were given a bowl of olives, at least half had been eaten by other people so they had chucked their stones back in the bowl and this was the same bowl now given to us. The final negative, not really the fault of the hotel is the inland walk to the centre. Its along a dusty, busy main road lacking in pavements. It did feel quite dangerous at night. So overall the hotel has some beautiful features but could do better.
