I arrived early for a birthday walk which we were going to follow up with an afternoon snack at the Royal. I called in and was told that tea was available until 5. What followed was the polar opposite of our experience last year when I booked in for a gathering of about 14 or so. We were told by...

Situated in a really beautiful spot, with extremely pleasant staff, we found the hotel clean and comfortable, but not quite to the standard of other 4* hotels. Although the location alone makes it worth booking a stay. Found the restaurant a little overpriced. Would recommend booking through Buyagift 2 for 1 hotel deals. Would also recommend to always check for...

We had a two night stay here booked as our Christmas present and what a lovely place this is. We had the small room number 11 but had everything we needed and the view from the window when open - wow! It rained continuously throughout our stay but we sat in the hotel seating area out front watching the world...

We had a really lovely breakaway at this hotel. We were in Room 1. Really big room, very clean, extremely comfy bed, good bathroom with shower over the bath. Complimentary toiletries (Shower/hair wash, Hand Wash and Body lotion and a shower cap) The restaurant food was very good. Dinner menu gave a choice for all tastes with the added bonus...

My husband and I stayed in the Oakwood Suite this weekend and it was absolutely perfect. The room is well worth paying that little bit extra for. It is spacious, clean and has the most comfiest bed. It has the added luxury of patio doors directly onto the top lawn. Breakfast was really really nice, would highly recommend the salmon...

An old fashioned, traditional hotel with rather tired decor situated in a beauty spot. We stopped off for a cup of tea which was served efficiently and whilst welcomed was nothing special. It is possible to sit outside admiring the view.

Stayed in room 21, near reception, because of bad knees. Very comfortable, lots of room and view over the river. Service friendly, polite and efficient. Good choice of food at breakfast, throughout the day and for dinner - not cheap but very good quality. Battered cod was enormous! We will be happy to return again.

We stayed here for one night. The receptionist was friendly and helpful. The room was large and clean. The shower was very tight to shower in being quite narrow. Nice large towels and plenty of them. The food was very good. one night cost 95 pounds plus a £5 car park fee. A lovely place to visit

The 2pm check-in allowed my husband and I to make the most of our pretty room, no. 19, with a lovely (albeit a little squeaky!) four-poster bed and fantastic views over the river. After a relaxing afternoon, the terraced garden is a beautiful spot to watch the sun set with a drink before dinner. We ordered from the set menu,...

We visited here after one of our bike rides (we were staying at the nearby Forest Holidays). The Royal Lodge is situated very close to the river and is a great spot to have a pub lunch or dinner. There are plenty of tables outside when the weather is good and the food is exactly what you would expect from...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Royal Lodge at Symonds Yat East has an idyllic setting in the heart of the Wye Valley in an area of outstanding natural beauty where the River Wye cuts a swathe through a wooded gorge on the edge of the spectacular Royal Forest of Dean. The Lodge is nestled just below Symonds Yat Rock and stands exclusively in grounds of almost 5 acres overlooking the river. It has terraced gardens of magnolia trees and a well established wisteria. The Royal was originally built in 1876 as a Royal hunting lodge and was converted to a hotel in the 1920's. It has had a full and extensive refurbishment in 2008 and is managed by Graham Howells who has overseen the transformation and ensures that the level of service reflects the new development and idyllic location. The Royal Lodge is a great place to unwind with long relaxing walks in outstanding scenery. The hotel is also well situated to explore the Wye Valley, Brecon Beacons, Black Mountains and the South Wales coast. ... more   less
