too much money for this kind of service, there is nothing else to do after 1030 pm, the pool closes at 7 pm, my room had a leak on the roof, the attention at the wet bar was terrible. Too long lines for lunch and breakfast, as there was no coordination to open the other restaurants for these meals.
We traveled to this resort our family wedding/honeymoon party of 40 or so by chartered bus and I must say that the beginning check in and checkout process was completely exasperating & dysfunctional. THE CHECK INN; we could not have been attended by a more incompetent, inexperienced person. To begin, for our immediate group, I reserved three rooms. Room #1 for 3 and of course paid for 3. Rooms 2 & 3 for 2 only, total of 7 paid for in 3 rooms. Although we expected additional family members but at the time were not sure of who or the count. I just thought we would pay for the additional family members upon check in. Sounds Simple. Not to our check in attendant, a complete short circuit, and cannot blame a language barrier, for I was 1 of 2 gringos in the party, the rest of the party are all Costa Rican. Now let us practice some third-grade math, 7 people paid for as shown on the itinerary, we arrived with 9 for theses rooms. (4 per room is their max) Balance, 2 people for 3 days at $50 (internet price) $300. This poor girl could not put this together and after 45 minutes and 9 trips “through the door” to discuss with management, I assume for further directions (we made a game of counting her trips “Through The Door”) After the second trip, you would think someone more knowable would have taken a hand off and accommodated us. NO. In the end they charged us $256, 2 at adult rate, 1 at child for the 3 days. Only one close to child was our daughter at 13 who I already included in our original reservation of three, at adult rate. THE STAY; OK, off to our holiday. I been here before 6 years ago and many other Costa Rican All Inclusive resorts and do consider this property sub standard to the others, but to be fair in is a fair bit less expensive…THE CHECK OUT Here is where it gets ugly. Upon checkout they insisted we underpaid and owed one additional night for the additional people in our group and also others in our party who planned their reservation pretty much the same. NOW management gets involved, for one thing only, to collect, not review. I steeped out of it and let our CR group handle it. It was starting to get a bit loud, in Spanish of course. Now with our bags flanked by security personnel, our chartered bus waiting and a 12:30 ferry boat to catch, my group conceded and paid an additional $202. Long and short of it, we paid $158 more than we should and were treated in a most disrespectful and unyielding fashion…IN CONCLUSION; I travel to CR 3 to 4 times a year and the Barcelo San Jose is my “go to” hotel and usually book my stay there. We stayed there for 2 nights before this farce along with the wedding couple who booked a suite for their wedding night. HOW can you have a well-run 4-star hotel on one end of the country and this off the rails joke at the other bearing the same name? I’m afraid I can no longer book the Barcelo, San Jose out of principal alone, although I enjoyed many stays there in the past. I hope I did not bore you with our story but it had to be told.…
This was our 2nd stay here. First time was about 5 years ago. The hotel rooms have gone into a state of immediate need of upgrade/ repairs. The tub didn’t drain, everything had black mold on it and there were many layers of paint and caulking on everything. Dead bugs all over, long hairs on everything, stained sheets. We couldn’t wait to leave. We asked if our room could be changed, but the offered a room across the hall that was equally as gross. The food is very subpar and it was very hard to find anything that was edible. We mostly ate pineapple and watermelon. The staff seems like they’ve given up. I realize that Covid has probably hurt this resort, but that time could’ve been used to make some much needed upgrades. One night the buffet didn’t even open for dinner.. no warning or anything. And for the other restaurants, a reservation is needed. Everything here was last updated circa 1990.…
The Barcelo Tambor is my "go-to" place. I park my car and just relax. With the Premium Level you feel like royalty (or at least rather well-to-do). For a small addition cost per night you enjoy lots of extras. Its my solution to cure any desire to go on a cruise. Its all inclusive without the worry of getting stuck at sea somewhere without the ability to disembark. After a 70 minute ferry ride, thirty minutes later I can park my car and not even think about looking for something to do. Once there I don't have to think about another thing other than booking my ferry ticket in advance for the trip back home. All Covid-19 protocol was strictly followed and I could maintain distance, keep safe and briefly escape the four walls of my home.
This time we paid the premium level, the difference in price was almost nothing compared with a normal room. It is a good deal as you get reservations for the restaurants every night, access to the premium lodge ( where you get great food and service at any moment of the day or night ) and a room with ocean view. Only thing to improve is the Italian restaurant which is bad, you need to ask someone to come and ask for your order, the waiter service was not good and the food either.
