Detailed Reviews
Did a 3 night mid-week break and on the whole was an ok stay but so many little things that could have made our stay better. We did speak to Lisa who is one of the Licensees to raise our complaints and she assured us they would be taken on board and dealt wirh. Lets hope so.
Arrived and taken to our room. Only information given to us was breakfast 8.30 am. Later found out, to our cost, that the 2nd key we was given was to open the staff entrance door when the pub is closed during 3pm and 5pm. We sat in our car for over an hour as was unable to gain entrance via the main door.
Room: good quality furnishings but unfortunately let down by silly things. Cobwebs in the window which worried us given Covid/cleaning. As someone else has already stated, duvet too big for the duvet cover which caused a trip hazard especially during the night when using the bathroom. Worse issue was the fact the toilet seat didnt fit the toilet pan!!!! Completely wrong shape/size. It annoyed us immensely as such a simple thing to get right it seemed to us it was a Oh that will do attitude when it was fitted. Issues with heating and towel rail which were eventually sorted out.
Restaurant: food always hot and whilst limited menu, enough choices for a short stay.
GOOD : kat and Carol the 2 waitresses on duty in the evening. Both a real asset to this establishment and nothing was too much trouble for either of them.
BAD: housekeeper served breakfast as well but did not wear a face mask or apron of any kind. After raising this with management, it transpired she had a health issue which exempted her but wore no lanyard/badge to indicate this until after we raised it with management. Tried to offer us breakfast items from a table that had just been vacated, not Covid safe at all.
Sorry this is a long winded review but feel it needs to be said as this is by no means a cheap place to stay and it is really let down by silly things that could make it better. Let's hope management take notice of all the points we made, not all on here.
Would we return, not too stay but for a meal as really good quality/value for money.

Lovey week day lunch with Hubby at our local pub.
We both had sandwiches which came with a portion of chips. The bread was lovely and soft with a nice crust. I had ham and tomato the ham was gorgeous, hubby had fish goujons 😋. If there was one thing and it’s only my taste the chips were a little under done.
But a lovely lunch in nice surroundings

Having been regulars we called in to encounter the new landlord. Umm..... He was bragging about the improvements he was going to make. Really he obviously wasn't aware that the pub functioned well. A proper local pub for villagers as well as providing good wholesome meals for others.
The landlady seemed more interested in her cocktail than she was serving. In fact she didn't finished one customer and started serving another .
We decided we had seen enough and didn't really want to go back. However recently driving through Gayton we decided to see if things had improved . No . There is more atmosphere in the international Space Station. Landlord still bragging about the impending improvements and how busy they were, but on neither occasion did he go behind the counter let alone get a drink or pour a pint. It wasn't busy well not like it used to be. If he thinks three people eating is busy then he needs to think again . Its really sad to see what can happen to a popular pub, on both occasions it was empty and at times and days that in the past it would have been busy . He then asked a customer of they needed anything and their reply was something along the lines. 'No we are fine we stayed here last night', where the devil had he been?
I normally wouldn't write a review but reading the reviews it seems that the new landlords seem to accept the positive comments but blame the customers for the negative ones. Even when customers have spoken direct they are at fault if on trip advisor they get accused of hiding behind a keyboard. No doubt I will get vilified. I very much doubt we will ever set foot in this pub again. Sad to see a very popular pub go down hill in such a manner.

Booked a table for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the ambience, the service and the food.
The place had definitely planned well to be Covid safe with one way footfall. The staff were a little slow but then we were tucked away in the Snug and we could see that they were busy.
That said, the staff were all very friendly and assisted our wheel chair user to use a level access entry point in to the room.
The food was well prepared, fresh and very well presented. All meals were substantial in quantity and the menu was considerably diverse with good choice.
I would certainly recommend and will certainly be back for business as well as pleasure.
Well done to the Team in their lovely quaint pub in Gayton. 👌🏽

The Crown is a lovely welcoming country pub, full of nooks and crannies to enjoy a meal out or drinks and a real asset to the village. Tried out their special Valentines menu which at £50 per couple for three courses including a bottle of wine was really good value. Food was lovely, staff were very attentive and the table decorations were a nice touch. Thank you Jackie, Leanne and Paddy for a great evening.

Decided on a few days away after our holiday abroad was cancelled. We wanted to explore Norfolk so was looking for a base to stay at. We chose The Crown for it’s location and price and weren’t disappointed. The pub itself is a lovely old pub with old fireplaces and low beams etc. The room we stayed in was well presented and in the main comfortable. One little niggle is the quilt cover being far too big for the quilt inside. The full English breakfast which is included in the price is one of the best we’ve ever had! We also chose to eat in the beer garden in the evenings and weren’t disappointed. Top notch produce cooked very well. Special mention to Isobel and Luke who served us food and drinks during our stay. Excellent service! Can’t really grumble about anything other than the quilt 😀. Would definitely recommend.

Limited choice and expensive!
This pub from first glance is part of a chain owned by the Greene King Brewery. I’ve eaten in several of their establishments and been very pleased with both the quality and price. On this occasion - horribly disappointed. We had looked at the website, almost chosen our meals from the delicious offerings only to have such choices removed. The menu was completely different, very much shorter - six or seven choices and extremely disappointing. They had no local beers (as a tied to brewery pub) a good selection of gins but limited tonics. This is considered to be a local pub for the family. We won’t be coming back.
My parents decided it was worth another try earlier this week. A tuna sandwich at £6.95 (deepest Norfolk not Kensington) was so thinly applied that it appeared not to be there at all. Needless to say the bill wasn’t paid. Appalling that they can’t even get a sandwich right, Greene King your reputation is at stake!

After a local walk with friends we decided we’d have lunch at the Crown as over the years I’d used the pub frequently.
Pleasant garden, excellent beer and friendly young staff.
Traditional Sunday Lunch was the only food offering - more choice after 6 pm I understand.
The food was disappointing - poor quality meat, vegetables overcooked.
In future we’ll just stick to the beer!

Waited 2 years to take my wife out for a meal and chose the Crown in Gaytin.. What a huge mistake. The roast turned up minus the veg as that was coming on a separate plate, fine. Everything on the plate was cold, potatoes like plastic. The veg arrived 5 minutes later. Nice hot carrots and cauliflower cheese straight out of the fridge and not warmed up. English mustard please I said and was brought apple sauce just as I finished my cold meal. No questions like did you enjoy.... Good job really. A refund is what I should have demanded.

Arranged a catch up with a friend had booked a table but ages to get seated and get a drink. Eventually ordered some food but waited about 40 minutes, just as we were beginning to wonder what was happening waitress asked us if we would like desserts. Had to say we haven’t had our mains yet to which she went to the kitchen and immediately returned with our meals which had clearly been sat there due to wilted lettuce, dried out peas and crust on tart. Mediocre pub grub and not a patch quality wise or value for money compared to other establishments

Not as far as I’m aware. Best outdoor play area I know would be The Ffolkes Arms which is not that far from The Crown.
Hi
it has been under new management for a while now, we tried it a couple of times and decided it wasn't for us.
Having said that in my opinion there wasn't anything terrible about the place or the guys that have taken over, so it might be worth a try to see for yourself.
Good luck
