Nestled in a prime location with breathtaking sea views, the Bela Vista Hotel & Spa has won the hearts of many for its charming atmosphere and historical decor, complete with live music that, while delightful to some, may be a disturbance to others. Opinions on the rooms are divided; some guests commend the cleanliness and vistas, while others point out their small size and occasional lack of hot water. The hotel's meticulous housekeeping garners high praise, and its luxurious amenities, including a highly-regarded spa and gourmet dining, are popular among guests. However, the service quality appears to fluctuate, and while the attentive staff is often lauded, some visitors have faced disappointments. The value for money receives mixed reviews due to extra fees and some unfulfilled expectations despite the allure of Michelin-starred meals and historic charm.

We have returned from the Bela Vista and it's disappointing, the return that is, not the Bela Vista. My husband and I have been staying there for a few years and each time just gets better. We don't think it needs to change but there are subtle changes taking place. After having read some of the reviews, I'm not sure what some guests are looking for but we find the authenticity and character fantastic. So maybe some of the aging tiles don't match or similar cosmetic things are not perfect but surely that adds to the original aspects and the location is what it is. Maybe if the other guests didn't appreciate these things, they should stick to a hotel chain where every rooms the same with no character. I have noticed how busy it's become but we stay in the main building and find once you are in the room, there's not much noise after hours. I've never had an issue with folk looking in from the buildings across the way either as stated in previous review and I've stayed in all areas of the hotel but there are curtains from floor to ceiling, infact there's two sets for privacy.
The breakfasts are great with plenty of top quality offerings and nothings too much bother. We had lunch at the pool which was delicious and I'm a very fussy foody.
The house keeping staff are extremely meticulous, well mannered and well organised. The front of house staff are the same and very pleasant.
We met the general manager again this time, he seems to glide around, sorting cushions, moving chairs, a perfectionist. He greeted my husband and I with a very warm hug. Super friendly just the way we found everybody at the hotel. We had a balcony which was amazing as it was 38degs, we would never have had to leave the room if we chose not to. There's complimentary water, tea and coffee all in the room. The pool is like the rest of the hotel, spotless.
We loved our stay and can't wait to return

Bela Vista is a true Oasis in the Algarve region. Centrally located with beautiful amenities including a pool that overlooks the beach.

It is a trip back in time with original Portuguese tile, wood and the main house belonging to the royal family of Portugal. They say it is the first hotel in the Algarve.

The modern house in the side is where we stayed which features terraces with ocean view rooms.

The real stand out is the service. They could not have been more attentive to our needs and did so with a smile.

The breakfast was fantastic outside on the terrace with ocean views each morning.

We had dinner in the bistro in the gorgeous bar that was sublime.

Centrally located to all that the Algarve has to offer. 30 minutes to Lagos and within one hour of everything you want to reach on the coast.

The one major negative was the street that it was located on was a loud party street that did not match the caliber of the hotel. The noise was manageable but I didn’t see how that is a problem. I feel bad for the hotel because they were there first. Also they should not charge 20 euro a day for parking on their own property but they did always have the car waiting with fresh water.

It was perfection otherwise and is a true five star hotel but you do need to be aware of the street it is located on. It felt out of place.

Dear Guest Justin S, We sincerely appreciate your thoughtful review of your recent stay at our Bela Vista Hotel & SPA – Relais & Châteaux. Your feedback brings great joy to our entire team, as it underscores our commitment to delivering exceptional guest experiences. Thank you for acknowledging the beauty of our property and the dedication of our team members, who prioritize ensuring our guests' satisfaction. We are delighted that you enjoyed our ocean-view breakfast, which is designed to complement our guests' stay with a touch of elegance. It's worth noting, as you rightly observed, that Bela Vista once stood alone at Praia da Rocha. The landscape around Bela Vista has since evolved into a vibrant tourist destination since its inception. However, we trust to be able of providing a serene and luxurious stay inside our Oasis. Once again, thank you for your kind words. This truly feels like a 5-stay review. Our Team hopes to be able to welcome you back soon! We remain at your entire disposal. Best Regards Gonçalo Narciso General Manager

This exclusive hotel surpassed our expectations in every way. The building itself is really charming and special. It’s fully restored with lovely historic details. Used to be the first hotel in the Algarve. Service is also truly exceptional. We received personalized attention at check in, taken to the lounge in one of the beautifully maintained historic spaces in the building to conduct the check in process in private and in comfort, and offered a welcome drink. The housekeeping service is outstanding, with second round/turn down service providing fresh towels, water, etc., as needed. Immaculate cleanliness. What a perk at a time when most hotels only offer service once every 3 days. The rest of the staff are also remarkable. They cater to every need. We felt like royalty. The breakfast was amazing. Probably the best I’ve had included at a hotel, and with so many options. Private stairs down to the beach. Beautiful heated pool adjacent to outdoor bar, and dining area for lunch and breakfast. Lovely decorated room. We stayed in the Blue House and had a view of the beach. Blue house only has a handful of rooms so very quiet. We didn’t hear people coming and going. Room 302 was small but adequate. Large double sink bathroom with large walk in shower. Since our room was on the beach side we didn’t hear the street noise which was loud. Gates to get in and out of the property so very secure. Only negative was our beach view contained the back side of beach restaurants which had graffiti so not a good view at all. Still, probably worth it being in that building and on that side for the quiet. Overall, DEFINITELY recommend staying here. Must dine at Vista while here! Worth the $.

This is my most favorite hotel that I have ever stayed in. From the moment we checked in until we left everything g was prefect! The hotel was so beautiful and unique, inside and out. The grounds were well manicured and there are stairs just next to the property that lead down to Praia da Rocha. Our room was in the “deluxe” building. This building has been fully renovated and our room had a balcony with a gorgeous ocean view. They provide complimentary still water, sparkling water, and small snacks. The location is great; we walked everywhere.

Staff - I was so impressed with the impeccable service! Everyone was so friendly and helpful. We did not want for anything.

Breakfast - The complimentary breakfast was so much more than I ever expected. We sat outside on the terrace every morning and took in the view of the beach and ocean. There was a self service area with fresh fruit, meat, and cheese. In addition, there was table service which included coffee, fresh juices, and a tower of baked goods. You could order hot food (also complimentary) also. The avocado toast and egg benedict were delicious! And again, the service was perfection.

Spa - We had a couple deep tissue massage and both my husband and I thought it was one of the best massages we had ever had. A 60 min massage was 98 Euro, a much better price than you will find at luxury hotels in US/Caribbean/Mexico.

I would 100% stay here again!

This is a beautiful property located above the Bluffs have a stunning beach. The main hotel itself is stunning. So you can imagine my disappointment when I was given a room that faced at hedge and a wall on the walkway. Room 201 or 202 I would avoid all costs, not only do you have to go to the corner of your patio to see the ocean but you get this horrible piped in music from my speaker that’s located at the corner of the pool. The music goes on and on until late in the evening, even when no one is by the pool. I’ve asked him to turn it down, but they seem reluctant to do so. I’m a solo female traveler, and I also be put on the ground floor is insensitive to the safety of a woman traveling alone

Dear Guest iamiamgoing, Thank you very much for taking the time to share your review regarding your recent stay at Bela Vista Hotel & SPA – Relais & Châteaux! We're thrilled to hear that you found our property stunning, with its beautiful ocean views and landscape. It's always rewarding to know that our guests appreciate the natural beauty of our surroundings. However, we're truly sorry to learn that your room did not meet your expectations. We understand the disappointment of not having a room with a view that matches the grandeur of our property. Nevertheless, the room type allocated to your booking corresponds to the room category booked, Elegance Garden Room, whose characteristics are well described in all booking platforms. One of these being a partial sea view. Your feedback regarding the music is duly noted, and we apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. During your stay with us, upon receiving your concerns, the volume of the music was diminished immediately. Nevertheless, rest assured, we will address this concern with our team to ensure a more pleasant experience for our guests in the future. We do kindly remind that our sound system also provides ambiance to our restaurant and is, normally, much appreciated by our guests. Finally, your safety and comfort are of paramount importance to us, and we regret if you felt that being placed on the ground floor was insensitive to your needs as a solo female traveler. Should our Team had known you did not feel safe, we would have done our very best to provide an alternative room accommodation. Kindly consider that Bela Vista is a gated and 24-hours guarded property with no register of incidents through the many years we have been in operation, that could lead our guests to feel unsafe. Our Team would be most glad to welcome you back and assist during the booking process to make sure you love your room as much as the rest of the property. Best Regards, Gonçalo Narciso General Manager

My sisters and I went for a spa weekend on the off season as a relaxed 'bachelorette' weekend. The interiors of the hotel are stunning and as it was off season and there were not many guests we were given a bit of a tour around the place and insight into the hotel's history, as well as a peek in their best suite with its insane bathroom.

While the rest of the beach is very noisy with rowdy party goers even in the off season, the hotel was a lovely reprieve from this, with the poolside seating in nice and private allowing us to chill out and read.

The spa was really relaxing, we had a full spa treatment, staggered one by one... I love I'Occitane products so a spa that uses them was so very lovely. We were the only ones at the spa at the time so the steam/sauna/ wet relaxation room seemed huge and cavernous. The massages after the baths & body scrubs in particular were great, as were the facials. I would definitely go back to the hotel just for the spa alone.

We did the tasting menu one night at Vista which was excellent, every last bite was a wonderful food journey to be remembered. I particularly liked the bar staff who made us cocktails just using a few words we used to describe the things we liked drinking.

Though it is expensive it was worth every penny, we were so stressed and exhausted from work and wedding planning this was the perfect place for a relaxing weekend for the bride before going back to London for her hectic whirlwind wedding weekend.

Disappointing for the lack of hot water (!!) Despite the pretty palace, with the old tiles of the stairs and common areas in the bar, the room I had was small and uncomfortable for many aspects: first of all the water in the bathroom was cold. Completely cold! I had a chill shower! I told the guys and the day after they said they had fixed it, but it was warm only for few seconds, then back to cold. One day I had to shower in a different room from mine. That was annoying and uncomfortable. Second, the ac was very noisy and I could not sleep well because the noise was waking me up. Third, the Bistro restaurant has a limited menu and not very good. Only the warm bread with their oil is worth it.
The starred restaurant Vista is fabulous, and really the only reason for which I’d go back there. But you can dine there even without sleeping in the hotel. Also, on the website there’s the image of the hotel in front of a wild beach, deserted, but that’s not what you find in reality: the beach is huge, but full of noisy sport activities and even in April there were umbrellas/beds for rent, but the hotel doesn’t have his own private beach, that’s uncomfortable. Also the stairs to reach the beach are very steep, coming back is a challenge!! And the hotel is surrounded by ugly, abandoned buildings or discoteques, so by night can be noisy. Or by modern high buildings with no charme. The last night they gave me a nice room on the corner, with a nice balcony, but still it did not have hot water!!!
The pool is nice but I did not dive in because it was cold, they do not heat the water, so it’s usable only in summer. The spa is very small, and the pool does not have a good water jet.
The breakfast is very good, fantastic pasteis de nata! The best I tried. The girls are very kind and assisted me with everything, but the water remained cold and in a 5 stars hotel member of Relais&Chateaux it is unacceptable.
All in all, I wouldn’t go back there, because it’s not worth the money they ask and there are other resorts much more comfortable in other places not far.

Dear Guest Susanna G, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback with us. We truly value your comments and the opportunity to address them. First and foremost, we are happy to read that you enjoyed your experience at our Michelin Star Restaurant VISTA and that you found our breakfast delightful. It is wonderful to know that the kindness of our Team was appreciated during your stay. Regrettably, we extend our sincere apologies for the inconveniences you experienced. Upon your arrival, it became apparent that the room initially assigned, nestled on the second floor with an exquisite vista of the ocean and located in our historical palace, did not meet your expectations. With utmost courtesy, we endeavoured to elucidate the historical nature of our Palace, an architectural gem steeped in over a century of rich heritage, where room dimensions and configurations remain faithful to this storied past. Responding to your discerning preferences, we promptly facilitated a relocation to an alternate accommodation, committed to ensuring your utmost comfort and satisfaction. As for our Bistrô menu, kindly allow us to inform Bistro is our casual restaurant, where we offer a selection of courses carefully selected by Chef João Oliveira and his team – the same team who prepared the Michelin Menu - using the fresh and local products of our region. Regarding the images showcased on our hotel’s website, they indeed aim to capture the essence of our esteemed Hotel and its services, as is customary for businesses with an online presence. However, on visiting the website, it is possibly to verify that we include a dedicated section highlighting our location, complete with a Google Earth Link for guests to explore the surrounding area and available amenities. Bela Vista, boasting over a century of heritage, once stood in isolation on Rocha Beach. Over time, this area has evolved into a touristic landmark, attracting enthusiasts of various water and beach sports, such as volleyball, surfing and football. Rest assured that the presence of these activities has traditionally been seen has enhancing the guest’s overall experience. Additionally, please note that an access ramp is available for guests who may find the stairs to the beach challenging, ensuring accessibility for all. Nevertheless, once again, we understand your expectations may not have aligned with the reality of the area's transformation over the years. While we cannot claim a private beach, neither can any other Hotel in Portugal as these are public spaces, we’re always happy to assist guests in arranging beach amenities for a comfortable seaside experience. We appreciate the opportunity to clarify a point. Contrary to what may have been inferred, our hotel is not surrounded by nightclubs or abandoned buildings. While there is a street nearby with bars, restaurants, and clubs, they do not encompass the hotel. The only unused building in the vicinity is an old theater, now utilized for film and television production. Additionally, as the summer season has yet to begin, the bars in the area are not fully operational, making it unlikely that they contributed to the noise issue mentioned. In response to the remarks concerning our modern buildings, namely the Garden House and the Blue House, which seamlessly blend the historical essence of our property with contemporary comforts, we wish to offer some insight. It's important to note that all essential services are centralized within the main building, The Palace, with the exception of a designated area allocated for our spa facilities. Therefore, it's possible that you may not have had the opportunity to explore other rooms or areas of the property in order to accurately comment on their appeal. We take this opportunity to address the comment regarding our SPA by L’Occitane with more detail. Our SPA has 400m2, 5 treatment rooms and a relaxation area with sauna, hammam and plunge pool, that you were able to enjoy has a hotel courtesy. Finally, we would like to address the matter regarding the hot water issue encountered during your stay. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. While such occurrences are rare, we took immediate action to rectify the situation and offered compensation to mitigate any disruption to your experience. Nevertheless, we understand the impact this had on the quality of your stay. We remain at your entire disposal. Best Regards Gonçalo Narciso General Manager

Wonderful staff and excellent service. We enjoyed our three days at the Bela Vista Hotel and Spa. The hotel is such a convenient location with beautiful views of the beach, the ocean, and the surrounding cliffs. The history of the hotel was impressive and the buildings have been beautifully restored and maintained. We took advantage of the spa and treated ourselves to the use of the facilities, the talented staff, and the relaxing treatments. Shout out to the best Concierge & Guest Relations - Beatriz Conceição!

My wife and I spent 3 nights at this hotel back in June and we were absolutely delighted by our experience. It's rare to find a combination of fantastic service, sublime food and comfort but this hotel checked all 3 boxes for us.

The location of this propery is perfect, close by the beaches but also in the center of Portimão so that you can easily go from one another in a few minutes. Service was spectacular across the board and the food at both the outdoor bistro as well as the Michelin star restaurant was phenomenal.

If there's only one thing I can say is that the arrival can be confusing as you need to get into a restricted area in order to driver to the hotel and the instructions weren't the best and the people operating this aren't the friendliest (it's not the hotel). Anyways we figured it out but getting there the first time was a bit more complicated than we expected.

Otherwise i would absolutely recommend this hotel, it's in the top hotels we've ever stayed at and we will be back if we are ever in the area.

Bela Vista is paradise on the beach. You are warmly welcomed and given a tour of the property which starts your relaxing vacation. The rooms are tasteful decorated and if you have a garden room your view from the balcony is spectacular looking right out into the sea.
We were very fortunate to have dinner in the 1 star Michelin restaurant ( which I think should be classified as a 2 star) the chef Joao Oliveira has a very creative and tasteful tasting menu. The service is top notch and a very friendly atmosphere I highly recommend you go you won’t be disappointed.
The operations manager Teresa Frazao went way above her position when helping us with requests we had at the hotel and making additional arrangements for us inPorto. She truly knows what customer service means as do her hotel staff .
We had an early departure and the hotel provided us with a breakfast to go which was unbelievable in the amount of food they gave us and covered every breakfast base possible.
I would highly recommend this hotel
