Positive aspects: The staff was friendly and helpful. The location was really close to the bus stop, just across the road. They offered free wifi but not available in the room. Negative aspects: Noise from bars stopped till 2 am. The bedding sets and facilities were really old and some of them were broken. Overpriced for the backpacker dorm which...

Great location great beer and food. Yes it was noisy on our second night as the bar across the road played loud music until 1,00am and then a noisy road sweeper was cleaning the streets at 6.30am. We expect this sort of thing in a town centre so no problem would definitely stay there again.

I've eaten and had drinks in the bar and in the Cobb and Co attached. The staff are welcoming, the atmosphere is great, it's definitely the best choice in town with the best prices. Real Irish staff behind the bar too 😄

Thankfully I only stayed here for one night. The Loney Planet guidebook hugely overrates this hotel which is more like a hostel. Granted, the room was cheap and clean, but the place is so basic and dated. Considering it was mid winter when I visited and the hotel was mostly empty, I was placed in a room (number 16) directly...

A group of us stayed here April 2015. We had a queen room with ensuite (room 34). It was basic but very clean and tidy with comfortable beds. No TV or kitchen facilities but everything available in the backpackers kitchen lounge and laundry. A few other members had some missing towels, soap (and even lightbulbs lol) but the staff were...

January 2015. I recently caught the naked to bus to Whakatane on $1 fare, for 2 nights. Was able to get off the bus and walk across the road to the beautiful old hotel. I had a large room all to myself, with the key, for a good price, was appreciative to be close to all ammenities, and to enjoy...

I did not have the opportunity to stay at this hotel as when we arrived, the front door was shut & locked for the evening. There is a sign with a phone number to reach someone after hours; however, when we called, no one picked up and it's the same number which is on the website. We did hear the...

We stayed here at the beginning of our Jan 2013 East Cape tour, It is basically a backpackers hotel. And if you were one of these, you couldn't fault it. As we are getting on in years we chose a queen room ensuite. For $75 it was a steal. No TV, but there was one in the lounge, two doors...

We called into the Whakatane Hotel for a cool refreshing drink after a long and tiring bike ride through the gorge from Gisborne in not such nice weather. Fortunately the weather improved as we rode into Whakatane. While enjoying the cool of the trees in the front courtyard we noticed they offered accommodation also. We decided to stay here as...

The accommodation at Whakatane Hotel is a series of rooms above a pub. The rooms are basic although the price isextremely cheap. The hotel is in an excellent location on a corner of the main street of Whakatane. When you check in, a notice reminds you that you are above a pub and no refunds will be given on the...
