Seems the rooms can be variable as far as noise is concerned. The wing on the main street being the least desirable. The en-suite room #15 was quiet. The en-suite is rather small but adequate - best feature being ample hot water. Good quality towels and face cloths. Hated the giant 250mm diameter "public loo" type toilet rolls. House keeping...

We arrived in whakatane really late, after 10pm and luckily for us Janet was still available to check us in and show us around even though the hotel section had been closed for the night. Great service and a great attitude. We will most definitely come and stay again. The kitchen dining area has a nice homey feel with a...

We made this booking from an I-Site in Tongariro National Park. It looked ok on the web site - ensuite room with Queen sized bed, which very comfortable and the room was clean, although basic. We had asked for a quiet room. Unfortunately, we were on the street side of the main drag which had a round-about at the front...

Great location and good beer and food in the adjoining pub. The old hotel is well past its glory days but is very centrally located and within walking distance of everything, The hotel was half the price of nearby, more upscale, locations. The hotel not only has a pub, the Craic, but also has a door through to the adjacent...

Positive aspects: The staff was friendly and helpful. The location was really close to the bus stop, just across the road. They offered free wifi but not available in the room. Negative aspects: Noise from bars stopped till 2 am. The bedding sets and facilities were really old and some of them were broken. Overpriced for the backpacker dorm which...

Great location great beer and food. Yes it was noisy on our second night as the bar across the road played loud music until 1,00am and then a noisy road sweeper was cleaning the streets at 6.30am. We expect this sort of thing in a town centre so no problem would definitely stay there again.

I've eaten and had drinks in the bar and in the Cobb and Co attached. The staff are welcoming, the atmosphere is great, it's definitely the best choice in town with the best prices. Real Irish staff behind the bar too 😄

Thankfully I only stayed here for one night. The Loney Planet guidebook hugely overrates this hotel which is more like a hostel. Granted, the room was cheap and clean, but the place is so basic and dated. Considering it was mid winter when I visited and the hotel was mostly empty, I was placed in a room (number 16) directly...

A group of us stayed here April 2015. We had a queen room with ensuite (room 34). It was basic but very clean and tidy with comfortable beds. No TV or kitchen facilities but everything available in the backpackers kitchen lounge and laundry. A few other members had some missing towels, soap (and even lightbulbs lol) but the staff were...

January 2015. I recently caught the naked to bus to Whakatane on $1 fare, for 2 nights. Was able to get off the bus and walk across the road to the beautiful old hotel. I had a large room all to myself, with the key, for a good price, was appreciative to be close to all ammenities, and to enjoy...
