This property is an option to consider if you are planning to stay in Matala.
The location is a bit eccentric but the center remains easy to reach on foot. This makes it a quiet and relaxing place.
There is free parking right in front of the building where the rooms are located.
So yes, the rooms and facilities are a bit dated, especially the small shower room. But considering the price, I found it pretty consistent.
The reception / pool area is very nice. We were perfectly welcomed, the pool was super nice and clean (and uncrowded, which was even more enjoyable) and we loved having breakfast outdoors, next to the pool. The buffet is also very good with savory and sweet options.
In conclusion, it is a very nice and affordable place.

ideal location : in a quiet cul-de-sac away from busy Matala, but only a 5-minute walk. Large parking lot. Room is basic but clean. We were 2 but there was also an extra bunk bed. That made the room cramped, but on the other hand also gave room to put your suitcase on. Shower is small but you do not pay for a luxury hotel. Plenty of rich breakfast, next to the beautiful and well maintained swimming pool (with bar). After 5 minutes of walking you are in the middle of Matala, with its many restaurants and shops.
All rooms have a private terrace but not closed off from each other. Personally, we didn't mind, but you have little privacy.

Reading all those negative comments really makes me wonder if those complaining really have been to the same Dimitris Villa I have been returning to time and again (10+ by now, I think...) ever since 2001.
Reading those "Never in life does this hotel have tree stars." makes me wonder if those complaining have any hint of an idea how those stars are granted and that the organization granting the star classification uses standardized measures for any hotel they classify.
Reading those "We were not able to communicate with anyone in English beyond a few words." makes me wonder how bad/un-understandable the "English" of those complaining could possibly have been, as I have had both ex- and intensive discussions (in English!) with Eleni and Marianthi on various topics and we never failed to understand each other.
Reading those "Everyone was unpleasant, impolite, turning us down." complaints makes me wonder how unpleasant and impolite those complaining possibly were to start with, as I have at no time experienced any such behaviour from any of the people who run Dimitris Villa. Ever.
Reading those "The breakfast was meagre, no selection of food beyond basics, just one or two kinds of bread and jam." comments makes me wonder if any of those complaining ever was forced to stand up hungry (unless they wanted to, just to enjoy having a reason for complaining) or not able to go and see the nearest supermarket to get what they considered missing on the buffet.
Reading those "The rooms are small, dark, uncomfortable." comments makes me wonder if any those complaining considered the vast amount of hours they acutally/possibly spent in the room and the price they paid for it and what luxury equipment it precisely was they were missing and had expected to find/be provided with.
I could go on and on with this list. However, this would take us nowhere. Neither fast nor slow.
Fact is: I have been staying with Eleni and family for almost 15 years, on and off. And rest assured I wouldn't have if I was dissatisfied with what I found in Matala every time I returned. And in all those years I did see fellow travellers whose main purpose it seemed to be to find things to complain about, rather than kicking back, relaxing and soaking up the Southern Cretan way of life.
If a five star luxury 500 beds all inclusive animation program all you can eat buffet triple-pool waterpark tennis courts wear long pants for the restaurant haute cuisine anonymous kind of holiday is what you're looking for and if anything below these expectations causes you to whine about what you actually get: Just stay away from Matala and Dimitris Villa. Go to the north coast. Have fun with thousands of other people, crammed on the beach, congesting streets and restaurants. Enjoy it. Please. And pay the rightful price for that sort of "holiday".
However, if you feel like indulging yourself to the relaxed, laid-back way of life in a more secluded spot of the island, letting your mind drift with the (rather scarce) cloulds coming in from the sea or over the mountains, if you understand the meaning of "Today is life - tomorrow never comes.", if the (admittedly) not so state-of-the-art-ish equipment of the rooms doesn't cause you to complain above and beyond reason, if you don't mind the short stroll from Dimitris Villa to down"town" Matala for the beach or some food in the evening, if you feel like (as someone else put it) "Arrive as a visitor and leave as a friend." is your way of making a vacation on Crete a special one:
Please join the ones who enjoy staying with Eleni and Marianthi at Dimitris Villa. Rest assured, you will not regret it. And if you treat the ones who host you with respect, you will be receiving just the same respect back from them. Even if they do not speak a word of German, English or anything except Greek. It's their personality that counts. And you will leave a bright smile on their faces when you walk past with a smile on your face and a cheerful "kalimera" on your lips.
Trust me. Been there. Done that. Enjoyed it. Every single time.

Look at that sparkling pool, which features prominently in all marketing. But ... the pool is dry. Apparently due to Corona health measures, but this doesn‘t seem credible: all other hotels we stayed at in Crete had filled and functioning pools! Note: the empty pool isn‘t covered or enclosed i.e. it‘s a dangerous hole in the ground

Highly recommended! Great value for money, small room but very nice and clean. Very convenient location, with free private parking and a few minutes walk from the center of Matala. Relaxing atmosphere, in the morning you could hear birds singing. The breakfast is not the best but still good for the price paid. Friendly staff.

I am actually sat by pool with an ice cold draught beer whilst writing this review. What can I say 🤔 absolutely fantastic experience. Such friendly and welcoming people not just 1 but everyone I met. Rooms are very clean and tidy and cleaned daily. Only thing for me missing was a kettle as like a coffee when I 1st get up. But wasn't a problem as stroll 70 yards to the magnificent pool area for breakfast and as much coffee as you would like. Lovely continental breakfast couldn't fault it . I would recommend dimitris to all my friends and at such an excellent price. Just a 5 minute stroll to the beach and restaurants of matala and no hassle of trying to find a parking space. Much exceeded my expectations.

Dimitrs resort was a great find. Friendly helpful staff, great swimming pool and ice cold beer. The rooms have a shady outside area(which is good when extremely hot). The room was clean and the a/c was cold. Good family rooms with 2 bed plus bunk beds. The evenings there are quiet and peaceful. Quick tip, there's no kettle in the room but ask and it's no problem to get 1. Also smart tv in the room which is a big plus. Dimitri himself is a good guy and will try to help you as much as he can. Thanks for the glasses.

It was our first time in Matala and expected to be greeted at the hotel Dimitris Villa. However there was no one there, eventually two children (presumably the owners children) came to manage our bags and take us to our room. The room was awful, there was no window, (i had requested a room with a balcony or atleast a window) it was dark and when we decided to tell the children they told us we'd have to wait until their parents arrived before they could do anything. Unfortunately the owners left us waiting for 2 days until they could be bothered to deal with us and even then, said they would not move us into another room. We therefore said we would like to leave, to which they said we needed to pay the full amount (5 nights). We offered to pay for the amount of time we had stayed to be decent, they refused and took our passports away. We then spent a further 3 days contacting the local police and ambassy to regain our passports. Once the authorities had spoken to them, they eventually gave our passports back but proposed we had to pay a further nights payment (for which we did not stay). We were quite frankly ripped off, we spent our whole time trying to leave, being subjected to threatening phone calls from the owners (who could nt be bothered to hand us back our passports). We then eventually escaped the wretched Dimitri villas hotel (which was quite far from the town of Matala) to the delightful Matala View pension which had a window, was very pleasant and amongst the real happenings of Malata. I would therefore advise people who plan on staying there in the future, unless you want a room with no window, a hotel run by children, want your passport taken away because you didnt get what you asked for, a hotel miles away from Matala- then is would be your perfect choice, otherwise dont bother.

I grew up with two very special friends, one from Ethiopia and one from America. But now that we are 30, our roads separeted. I am in Italy, Alfredo is in London and Mike is in America. We decided to have a reunion and we chose Dimitris villa in Matala. Alfredo took a flight from London, I took a flight from Rome and Mike took one from Boston. It was the perfect place for such a special time. We had so much fun and all was made even better by Elena, the lady of the hotel, who is so laid back and friendly that we never felt like guests. Alfredo, Mike and I have deceided that every year we will reunite in this paradise place. Inexpensive, beautiful and relaxing!!!! Thank you Elena!!!!!
