It is a very poor hotel: not very close to the beach (about 800 m), without a good wi-fi connection (it is impossibile from the rooms), essential breakfast. But it is important to notice that it is clean and there is a pleasant pool. Prices are quite good.

We stayed here from 15/7/17 to 22/7/17. The room was what we expected, which was basic, but it was large, comfortable and clean, but the bathroom had seen better days and could do with a re-fit. The hotel advertises TV in all rooms which is true, it is just that there were only channels available, 1 German, 1 French and BBC World News in English. The staff are great, very friendly and helpful, with special mention to Harris and the Barman (forgotten his name, sorry). The pool area is excellent, plenty of space and sun beds and is kept spotlessly clean, The selection and quality of food, for breakfast and dinner, were excellent and it required great self-restraint not to keep going back for more.

When Harry and Tim ran the hotel it was excellent and you felt at home there. We stayed there two years ago with the new management and the atmosphere was awful. You had to pay for air conditioning, the breakfasts were the same recycled food day after day and the manager and his cronies were rude and unhelpful. We now stay elsewhere in Matala

My tour group stayed at the Europa Hotel one night. We had a large room in one of the back buildings. The room had simple furnishings, a flat screen TV with one English channel and several French and German channels. There was a nice refrigerator in the room. The bathroom sink leaked on to the floor, and they only provided us with one small bar of soap, nothing else, no shampoo! Air conditioning appears to cost extra, we had to get a key and a remote control from the front desk to use the air conditioning. For the pool, you are not allowed to use your room towel, you are supposed to supply your own. The pool is large and looks nice but we did not use it, as we did not travel with extra towels!!! There are no lifts at this hotel, rooms are in several back buildings which could be a problem if your are mobility challenged. The hotel grounds are very nice. The breakfast was not memorable. There must be better places to stay at in Matala, I do not recommend the Europa Hotel. Most of the reviews appear to be several years old, they do not deserve the "Certificate of Excellence" from Trip Adviser.

We spent a week in this hotel in year 2009 and we really enjoyed it. The hotel was family-runned with nice and helpful owners - a young couple. The spoke well english and german. Our room is very basic, but had almost everything we needed. It was cleaned every day, we also had a balcony with a lovely view to the mountains and sheep:) The breakfast was served in the hotel, it was very basic continental with bread, some ham, cheese, peach compot and boiled eggs. Our dinner in half-board we had in a very nice restaurant at the beach, the meals were very tasty and the lady serving it was very nice and always smiling. Something for the lunch we always found in one of the restaurant or bistros in the centre of the village. We enjoyed also the perfect bakery shop close to the square. Just next to the beach is also small supermarket where we bought everything we needed. To the beach we had to walk to 10-15 minutes, but we did not mind. The beach was small with the sand in one half and tiny stones in the second half. Just before the hotel building there is a bus stop where does the bus to Heraklion stop, we made a nice trip to Knossos palace.

Our family of four stayed one night in this hotel. Our room had a double bed and two stacked bunk beds for the children. The room was clean, well appointed and opened out to a small balcony. The beds were comfortable. The bathroom was a good size, though it was impossible to shower without water leaking onto the floor. Though it drained right away, it seemed that the floor was always wet. We were charged EU5 for air conditioning for the one night. Breakfast the next day came from an extensive array of meats, cheeses, pastries, fruit, yogurt, toast, coffee, juice and milk. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the beach and the village center where there are many nice restaurants. We enjoyed our stay and would happily go back again.

I went with my wife and daughter for 3 days, during the Matala Festival 2013. All hotels were fully booked and we only managed to find a room at Princess Europa. The hotel was set at the entrance of the village, so it took about 15-20 minutes’ walk to get to the beach. The accommodation was very basic, which was not really a problem for us, since we only went to the hotel to shower at the afternoon and sleep at night. However we were really irritated by bad value for money. The hotel management obviously tried to take advantage of the very high demand due to the festival, which I understand, but they obviously had overdone it, since I paid 110 euro per night!!!! Apart of that Matala is worth visiting and staying for a couple of night and not only during the festival. It is a beautiful village and the locals are very kind and helpful. The beach is beautiful, the market and the narrow streets on the old village are fantastic. To sum up, we are already planning to visit Matala again, not during festival, in order to have a more relaxed experience.
