If you are looking for an experience of sleeping in a palace-room with old classic setting and feel, then that is not possible in this place. The rooms are generally standard bland simple newish rooms without any atmosphere of being in a castle. But there definitely is a castle and that you can visit by asking the owners who are keeping this castle-hotel, and they are very friendly, committed and hard working. They are recreating the castle atmosphere. If you really want to sit in those historical-atmosphere and have a drink or listen to music or converse with friends, I think you will need to attend one of their several courses and workshops that are arranged regularly. So, it was a mixed feeling of being in a castle without actually sleeping in a castle-room but surely in a very nice place.

This is a proper antique castle, and the cultural and historical experience of a stay here, or just having cake and coffee in the garden, is pretty amazing. Unfortunately, the rooms did not quite meet our expectations: we'd paid extra for a garden view, but ended up in a corner with limited view, in return for having to listen to lively conversations until late night. The breakfast is a bit limited. The owners and staff were absolutely delightful.

This castle really is a castle: a zillion rooms, grand entrances, fine food, and lots of nooks and crannies. The accommodations are nice but not extravagant: the point is not that it is a fancy hotel with a history, but that it is a wonderful place to stay to understand many centuries of Danish history. That's not to say that the rooms are uncomfortable: the beds and sheets are excellent, the all-important wifi is fine, and many of the rooms have lovely views of a vast garden. If you're looking for a great way to get the feeling for the quiet parts of northern Denmark, this would be an excellent choice.

Dronninglund is part of the Small Danish Hotels-chain, and you need to bear in mind that this is in fact a small hotel. They are not understaffed, but they have for instance selected to not have the reception manned in the afternoon/evening. A late arrival will then have to get help at the restaurant instead. On arrival you receive a set of sheets explaining how things are done here, and you also get some information about things to see in the area. Since the building hails from the medival times, you will find small things that wasn´t refurbished last week. I suggest you let those things be, and focus on the halls, the restaurant, the sitting room and the park. Situated quite close to the city of Aalborg, to beaches and harbours on the eastern coast of Jutland, about an hour by car from the Skagen-area this is an excellent place to stay when exploring north-west Denmark. Helpful and friendly staff, a restaurant with an excellent wine cellar, breakfast focusing on Danish fare also add to this being a good place to stay. Hints: meet at the reception at 5 PM to join in a wine tasting session. If you have time, treat yourself to both lunch and dinner. The hotel is also able to cater to non-glutinous/non-dairy fare, but it is best to give advance notice of such needs. Sadly, they do not offer EV charging for now.
