Like most other reviewers on this site, we found La Plume d'Oie to be an exquisite auberge.

We stayed in the Tichodrome and Martin-Pecheur rooms which have unencumbered views up and down the River Dordogne. The location is centre-town and perfect for touring the considerable number of "Plus Beaux Villes", chateaux and formal gardens in the local area. As a further outstanding feature, owner/chef Marc Walker offers cuisine at both dinner and breakfast that is imaginative, tasty and well-presented which, in our experience, is an unusual combination for many eating establishments in France.

Strongly recommended.

My husband and I stayed at this small and charming auberge during a tour of the Dordogne region. La Roque-Gageac's beauty is well documented and deservedly so. A Green river with golden reflections explored by boat trip from the village produced a peaceful, contented feeling which was only enhanced by the comfortable room with pretty little balconette giving a view onto the lovely river.

But this is a restaurant with rooms rather than a hotel and to stay here and not dine would be a serious mistake. Gordon Ramsey eat your heart out! Marc Walker is the real deal. We are both vegetarians - in France most restauranteurs seem to view this as a personal insult! We gave a few days advance notice and Marc produced a fabulous meal for us. The apperitif was chilled white wine with a floral scent - elderflower cordial made in house was added - and it really hit the spot. Dinner was several courses of a delightful blend of flavours and textures - showing that vegetarian cuisine can be every bit as exciting in the hands of a master chef. All ingedients were fresh and perfectly cooked. The dishes were lovely to look at too. The best meal of the holiday was enjoyed here. The restaurant itself is very pretty with a lovely view onto the river. It is a comfortable and charming place to sit and we lingered over coffee.

We slept well in the comfortable and tastfully furnished simple room and the bill was very reasonable given the quality of the food we had enjoyed.

Marc and Hiddly Walker were friendly and we certainly look forward to staying there again when we return to the lovely Dordogne River.

Contrary to a recent review by 'Apollinaire' we stayed at this comfortable, well run and scrupulously clean Auberge
around the same time. We found the owners friendly, helpful
and congenial. Our room welcoming after a day out in this gorgeous area. Ours was a most memorable stay in this
lovely village

My husband and I returned to La Plume because of fond memories of a past visit, hoping that not too much would have changed. We were not disappointed. I requested the same room overlooking the river and with a small balcony. It is a wonderful spot to relax after a busy day of sightseeing. The highlight of each day, however, is always dinner prepared by Marc Walker. My husband has been describing the food to friends and relatives here in the U. S. for the past five years and he was delighted to find nothing had changed in the kitchen. During our stay, we were introduced to another American couple. The husband, who had stayed there in past on a business trip, had also returned because of fond memories, this time bringing his wife. Like us they were not disappointed. The little garden in the rear turned out the be a mini gathering place for folks to rest and share experiences. This time we expanded our local touring to include the prehistoric cave art around Lascaux as well as some local castle/towns and Josephine Baker's chateau for those of you "of a certain age." Ask Hiddy for direction to some incredible gardens with awsome views of the Dodogne valley and La Roque. La Plume d'Oie is the perfect spot for travelers who like a homey atmosphere, incredible cooking and two very special people to take care of them. Mary Lou Knurek, Irvine, CA

We have stayed at La Plume d'Oie four times since December 2002 - and we can't wait to go back later this year :). My parents - who have travelled extensively worldide- first recommended the place. We stayed over Christmas in 2002 and totally fell in love with the place. Wonderful location, excellent food (we were living in Paris at the time and can truly say that we don't understand why the food and wine served here doesn't have a star or two in the Michelin guide) and thoroughly enjoyed Mark and Hiddy's personal touch and involvement with all the guests.

What totally thrilled us from the very first stay was the way we felt at home from the moment we arrived and at the same time felt very special because exquisite meals were served with a personal touch.

We see that other reviewers have complained about being "obliged" to have at least one meal served at Plume d'Oie. But that is the whole point (as it is in most of the great restaurants in France located outside the big cities)! This is a wonderful, small, high-quality restaurant where you also can stay for a night (or even better: for a few nights). The rooms are nice, simple and clean and just looking out of the window each morning is almost worth the stay :) (I'll try to add some photos...). The rooms are not Hilton hotel rooms - fortunately. They provide the opportunity to go upstairs after a sumptuous meal - like at some of the other stellar French provincial restaurants. There is also so much to see and experience in Dordogne that having the privilege to go back to your little hotel and have the most wonderful dinner - and even having hosts that are willing to talk to you and give their personal recommendations - before climbing up the stairs to go to bed... For us this has provided the opportunity to savor, to enjoy, to relax - and to engage all your senses,.

Do not go to this hotel!!
The owner is mean and dishonest. In February 07 I booked a room for my husband and myself (we are a Franco-American couple) for 3 nights. I cancelled less than 8 hours afterwards and I was told that I would be charged nevertheless 30% of the whole stay but I could redeem the cash if I booked again within the same year. In May I called the hotel again and the owner, an Englishwoman who doesn't speak French, told me that if I wanted to stay and have the credit, I had to stay 3 nights AND eat at their restaurant (nobody ever asks for that in France!). Then she started telling me that I was an idiot for having cancelled in the first place. The owners of La plume d'oie clearly have no business being in the hotel business.

We stayed at the hotel for one night which included a breakfast. I had read that the bathrooms could do with a bit of modernising, but I felt that the price was reflective of the standard of the hotel which we found to be clean and tidy in a great location. Tea & coffee making facilites were provided in the rooms which is unusual in hotels in France.
And I must highlight the breakfast which was beautiful. Freshly squeezed orange juice, homemade yogurt and as well as the baguette & croissants we had fried egg each which was beautifully presented. Would definitely recommend.

My boyfriend and I spent three nights in La Plume D'Oie and it was a completely lovely experience. The place is small -- just four rooms -- but they are very clean and well equipped, and we had a lovely balcony with a view of the river. Our host, Mark, was extremely accommodating to our late arrival and made extra effort to ensure we were comfortable.

Mark, the owner and chef, started the place decades ago with his late wife, and he is an absolute delight. The restaurant -- his cooking -- was by far the best meals we had in France, superbly and imaginatively prepared, just delicious. Their wine selection is also amazing.

We loved chatting with Mark and his staff after dinner and appreciated all the little ways they made our stay comfortable -- recommending places to visit, where we could find wine to purchase. We loved the place so much in fact that we decided to come back for a couple of days on our way back to Paris.

The town itself is absolutely lovely and peaceful, a really ideal launching point to explore Dordogne.I highly, highly recommend staying at La Plume D'Oie.

The room is small but clean. A small balcony overlooks the river and the town.
The bathroom is adequate, nothing too fancy. WIFI works perfectly and is free.
The restaurant below is awesome - please see seperate review.
There is free parking just down the road.
Organising this accommodation from NZ was easy with good communication from the owners.

After spending 3 nights in Paris and a few nights in Beynac, we kept waiting to have a dining experience that would speak to the French people's love of good food, but were sadly disappointed up until our night dining at this restaurant. The chef is a marvel and obviously loves what he does here, because it comes across in his food. The dining room is also just lovely, very elegant without being overly formal. The lady who seated us and waited on us was very pleasant and also spoke English, which helped us tremendously because we are Canadian. We were seated without a reservation a few nights ago, which was incredible given the quality of the dining experience. We both ordered the 3 course menu for 33 Euros, which was amazing value considering the quality of the food. The meal started with an amuse bouche of red pepper jelly with a shrimp mousse, I believe, that was delicious. We then had the most melt in your mouth mushroom/truffle lasagne, with the noodles so thin and delicate....oh my god, we both died and went to heaven! We followed that by the filet of beef for my fiancé and the cod with saffron for myself and both were outstanding. You could cut the beef with a fish knife, it was that tender! Dessert was a poached pear with homemade vanilla ice cream for my fiancé and chocolate mousse with the most amazing dark chocolate ice cream for myself. An outstanding meal from beginning to end and thank you to the patrons of this restaurant for giving us a taste of fine french dining at last! The cost for all of this was a reasonable 102 euros, that also included a half bottle of a lovely red Syrah. Well worth it and I would highly recommend this place for a special dinner out in the Dordogne region. It will be very hard to top that is for sure!
