The Posada del Arquitecto was born in the early 90s, when Mazunte was still a wild, virtually uninhabited beach. There were no access roads at that time. In 1989, Guido, the Architect, who was already familiar with this stretch of the Oaxacan coast, discovered an amazing spot lost in time, Mazunte, where he fell in love with this virgin beach and decided to build himself a house. Many friends from around the world wanted to visit this incredible place, and soon they began to show up. Inhabitable accommodations were required for their comfort. Thus began the evolution, almost spontaneously, of the Posada, starting with a few rustic palapas and cabanas that were built with local natural materials, experimenting with the principles of bio-architecture, while discovering, adapting, and developing the traditional construction techniques in this region - an entertaining and fascinating game for an architect. In 1997, Hurricane Paulina caused severe damage in this part of Mexico, destroying much of the Posada and necessitating repairs and reconstruction. The first cabanas were thus transformed into more solid, safe and comfortable structures, while preserving the minimalist style that utilizes the area's natural, living materials. The overgrown hill that was the setting for the Posada's earliest rustic palapas gradually became a garden. With the passage of time and the collaboration of old and new allies, the Posada del Arquitecto has become less spartan and much more comfortable, without losing the relaxed spirit of a big home where friends are always welcome. We keep striving to respect our surroundings, which is why the cabanas are built in harmony with the original natural elements of this place. Please help us to protect and preserve the living plants and animals you encounter during your stay. Today the Posada del Arquitecto offers its guests/friends a multifaceted experience, including yoga, massage, an impressive view of the bay from the cabanas, and free Wi-Fi connections. The beach is so close that the rhythm of breaking waves will become the soundtrack for your stay.We hope that you enjoy your time with us.

Nice selection of juices, smoothies, coffees and yes they do have proper coffee machine! Great house music late afternoon, often live musicians in the day time. Plenty of vegan and veggie options. Cocktails etc also available. Good place to hang out with friends, varied seating (upright or sofa type and hammocks on the upper deck, and below deck tables and chairs on the beach):

Overall we had a great time in Mazunte, but this wasn't necessarily because of this place. We stayed at Luna, which is the highest room of the place, just aside las estrellas. There had been a hurricane a couple of months before, so the place was a little messy. Some cabins hadn't been fixed yet.
The place has an excellent view and probably the best location. It's right next to the beach, and has a nice terrace that works as a restaurant and common grounds.
At night mazuntes (regional crabs) ran up and down the place, it was really nice to see and hear them.
The place itself is really beautiful. It sits on a little hill that devides two beaches, the cabins are cozy and well adapted, the place is clean and spacieux. You could get a good night sleep and food was ok but pricy.
For us, hanging beds worked the best ;)
The dark/not-so-funky side:
-There are a lot of mosquitoes, specially at night. The bedrooms have a hanging mosquitoe net but it had holes. Also, it's really hot at night and the cool air coming out of the fan doesn't get past the net, which as you can imagine gets pretty annoying.
-Staff is really, and I mean REALLY unhelpful and unkind. It's as if they did not want you to be staying there. They don't even smile back... They try to seem laidback and hippy, but they really aren't. We had stayed there before and we wanted to make a reservation for 3 nights, but they wouldn't take reservations for less than a week during holidays, even though they don't have any problems with finding more guests for the rest of the week, which gave us the impression that they don't want to do the extra effort. Greed is so not hippy...
Mazunte is beautiful, and so is this place, but do look for other options before.

I spent 10 days here and loved almost every minute. Mazunte is a great hippy-vibe little village, and the hotel is right on Playa Rinconcito. The architecture is designed to blur the lines between inside and out, which means you have to be comfortable with close encounters with wildlife and jealously guard your food from ants, but if you like the outdoorsy life you're probably used to that anyway.
The first night was disappointing, we stayed in Ebano and had extremely loud neighbors upstairs who refused to turn down their music even after multiple complaints by ourselves and staff. Luckily they checked out the next day and we had no other annoying neighbors. Ebano is a sweet room, with a tree growing in the bathroom and another trunk as a backlit wall sculpture on the bedroom wall (which we couldn't figure out how to turn off at night..). Because of the vegetation there's not much breeze and you have to peer at the sea view between trees. I felt this room was a bit overpriced.
But the third day we got a chance to move to Cactus and this made up for everything that went before! You have a private entrance into what feels like a multi-level treehouse. The completely equipped kitchen has a sink and counter hewn out of rock and overlooking the expanse of the Pacific. The thatched dining patio gets a great breeze and offers 180 beach views. The living/sleeping area is very roomy, although the bed closest to the bathroom gets spray from the open window when it rains. Also, if you're tall and female you may feel like you're giving a peep show to the beachgoers below when you shower. One of the best features is the sun deck where you feel like you're in the crow's nest of an old-fashioned ship as you watch the fishermen bring in the daily catch (or the tourist boats disgorging their orange-vested cargo). This place truly felt like home while we were here.
There's a great restaurant across the street (Estrella Fugaz), but the noise can carry over to the hotel on occasion, this was especially true of their movie night.
All in all, while not perfect, this vacation was pretty damn close!

A place NOT to go, we stayed in what they call a rustic cabin, Casiopea for U$55 a night, I don't know who thinks that is rustic, if you are an architect you don't understand anything. Hanging beds? Who was the genius of that idea? They don't work, you get dizzy, the bathroom is a disaster, almost no water (just cold). I don't understand with so many bad opinions it has a high score. It is also under construction and is noisy all the time. Don't go and don't be fooled by the photos like what happened to us, everything is very bad.

First day, when we asked for a coffee filter and the receptionist brought it up, it caused annoyance and she slammed the door on us. We went to the reception and her tone was mocking, saying that she was doing us a favor. She also told us that she could leave us because she is a friend. from the owner, he discriminated against us for being from Mexico City, then he asked a masseuse for an opinion who completely ignored the situation, we were very upset...since Janet was totally friendly, ADRIANA continued making fun, when an Italian arrived he also asked his help to which Mr. He started shouting that was even more uncomfortable, and as far as we know he is not part of the Hotel, until JANET arrived to calm down everything that was happening... he gave a solution we wanted the refund... In the end we stayed because not because of the bad vibe of a person who does not know what his position is and little education and ethics and poor treatment of tourism we would leave although on the other hand we feared for our safety since the Italian looked at us in a very challenging...we work in tourism and the goal in the end is that the vacation experience for the tourist is to be unforgettable, here I add photos of the person...I hope they do something about it because definitely their surroundings ARE WORTH IT

This was one of the worst places I have ever stayed at during my many years of traveling. The website is deceiving. I thought I would be falling asleep to the sound of the surf but instead I was kept awake until 4 in the morning by the extremely loud low vibrations of electronic music from the neighboring bars and restaurants. Even the posada's cafe had loud mind-numbing techno music playing until 10 at night. My cabin was right above it. The rooms were hot and stuffy. The ventilator did not work properly. They promised to install another one but they never did. The safe deposit box was broken. They also demanded the balance in cash which was a lot of money to be carrying around. They would not accept a credit card. There are no ATMs in Mazunte so we had to take a taxi to Pochutla to draw cash. The staff was very unfriendly, even rude. They have no interest in customer satisfaction.

Needs improvement on customer service, need to switch rooms due availability at the middle of my stay. Had to take my stuff out and wait until 3 pm to taking the things back. I ask them to see if I could do it earlier and the answer was NO and you do it. I understand I have to do it, but I was charge full and they could help me to have the room faster and the guy at the reception was just with an attitude.

Have been staying for four years and this is was my last there,

Despite all the positives of the place such as great beach front location, cheapish accommodation compared to other hotels around, staying there left a rather bitter taste in my mouth. I stayed in one of the estrellas, which is like a hanging double bed covered with a mosquito net for 100 pesos. The estrella area is on top of a rock right next to the ocean front, so you fall asleep and wake up with the sound of the waves. There are no lamps or light in the evening, so have your own flash light. You have a locker, as there are no cupboards, you sleep almost under the stars - you have to have your own padlock. Even the shared shower is totally open, well you can call it hippy, you can call it natural or romantic or simply grim, it's up to you however you want to address it. It was the cheapest option at a time, all other hotels were booked up and their dorms looked like concentration camp baraques for 80 pesos, so I decided to stick with the estrellas.

The negatives of the place: the receptionists do not speak a word of English, so be prepared to have a rather rude and unhelpful attitude. Just to give you and example, when I checked in the receptionist lady didn't bother to help me at all, when I asked for a sheet, she said "not included" and rushed off. After spending a night sweating on and sticking to a plastic mattress managed to get a sheet for 10 pesos from another, slightly more helpful receptionist. Yes, the sheet was not included, but hey, anyone would have 10 pesos for it, the receptionist just didn't want to bother to give it to me.

The estrellas are not rooms and you have to sign an agreement that the place is not responsible for any of your valuables unless you leave them at the reception. Therefore when I checked in I left my little bag with all of my valuables, all of my money, cards, passport etc, at the reception. It was simply shoved in a filing cabinet by the super unhelpful, dismissive receptionist. When I checked out a couple of days later I had a rather nasty surprise - huge sum of my money was stolen from my purse. It took me a day to go back to the hotel and just as usual, no one was helpful and no one would even understand that I wanted to talk to a manager. A local Mexican girl kindly helped me to translate and when I told her my problem, she reported exactly the same problem: she had left her towel outside overnight which was stolen by the morning, just like her boyfriend's two swimming togs!

By the afternoon I managed to meet an English speaking manager who wrote down the incident and promised to get back to me. Well, as it never happened I emailed her in a week time. To cut a long story short, after almost a month long back-and-forth emails they refunded the money that was stolen from me. I guess this was the minimum they could do, but I can't really report on a really helpful attitude in relation to the issue either.

I am leaving this review here as it is simply unacceptable that hotel staff steals from you when you leave your valuables with them and to raise awareness. Honestly guys, you are better off using your own lockers with your own padlock, not leaving stuff at the reception and you have to be really aware of not leaving your valuables around (anything!), as it can get stolen. You will probably have great difficulties there if you don't speak Spanish too..

Let me start by saying the staff wasn't as bad as the reviews suggested. We loved the idea of the place and the location. The rooms were charming and it was lovely waking up to the sunrise. Besides the sewer smell and the construction that begun at sunrise, the bed bug bites all over our bodies was not ok. We would not recommend this place to anyone. I'm super paranoid about having brought them home with us. Did you know they live for a year without feeding? Making them impossible to get rid of without throwing out your mattress and paying an exterminator exorbitant amounts of money to fumigate all of your possessions. Thumbs down!
