While staying at the Great Bear Chalet, the owner provided us with an unforgettable bear viewing river drift down the Atnarko River in the Bella Coola Valley. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and professional. Our drift boat slowly passed several grizzly bears as they fished for salmon in the river. It was truly an amazing experience. The owner, Jefferson, provided local lore, snacks and lifejackets.
The lodge itself had everything we'd hope for. Comfortable, clean & well worth it. We were very fortunate one evening to view a mother grizzly with cubs while enjoying dinner. I hope to stay there again next time we're in the area.

I just spent two amazing days enjoying the corner of paradise that Jeff shares so loving with the bears. Late in the season and we enjoyed a morning drift with over seventeen different bears. Not to mention the eagles and magical morning mist. I left the camera behind and just enjoyed the moments with binoculars and filled my memory with magical images. Truly a special trip with the highest quality guide that is clearly passionate about protecting and sharing these beautiful animals. Highly recommended adventure! Butterscotch and her twins saw me down the road the morning I left. So very, very special. Thank you Jeff for making this all possible. If you are looking for an immersive experience this is the place to book. Owner operated and clearly passionate.

We had a powerfully humbling experience. Up close and personal with momma grizzly and her three cubs. Experiencing many grizzlies in their own environment while drifting down the Atnarko feeling exceptionally safe. We saw a huge spawning of several species of salmon and majestic eagles. Jeff is an extremely experienced guide who educated and shifted our fear to great appreciation and respect for grizzlies. The tranquility and excitement of co existing with these magnificent creatures was a unique life experience. The beautiful natural chalet rests in the southern section of the Tweedsmuir park created by this man who is passionate about the environment and the animals. This “green”self sufficient solar off-grid chalet is very well appointed and comfortable. Jeff went out of his way to make us feel at home and welcomed. The food is healthy and home made. We will definitely be back.

good: location, knowledge of the bears and local area, river drifts, excellent cook, nice views. Not so good: extremely opinionated and quite frankly, appears to be angry and hostile. room, including the bathroom have no coverings on them, one of the rooms is his personal room which he gives up when guests are there. it is over priced for what you get as it is basically a "high end" B & B. Sorry, but cannot rate it much higher than average and even at that, it is a push but I would feel guilty giving it a poor rating.

Go to the Great Bear Chalet for a full bear experience. If you just want a nice hotel, or you just want a photo of a bear, go somewhere else. But if you want to share the life of a kind and caring man who knows and respects bears go to the Great Bear Chalet. It is more than a holiday tour. Jeff is generous with his time, his knowledge, and his warm personality. The last is particularly welcome because his house can get darn cold. Our fault because we opted not to light a fire that would scare off the bears.

We did see a lot of bears with Jeff in just two days.

We had a lovely time trekking through the coastal rainforest with Jeff, getting educated about the local wildlife and flora. We were hoping to encounter some bears but we knew we were visiting at the wrong time and even though Jeff took us to areas that are frequented by bears we unfortunately did not see any. We are looking forward to a return visit at a more auspicious time.
