Great family suite which was just perfect for our needs. Rita was a delight to talk to when getting us settled in and saved us big-time with getting to the Bella Coola Valley Inn for take-away dinner, which closes for sit-down meals at 7.30 and for takeout at just before 8pm.

The welcome in this rustic lodge was warm like the e-mail correspondence about the booking in advance. We had a functional room with kitchenette so that we did not depend from restaurants because the open next ones were obviously in the 15 km away Bella Coola. Unfortunatlely, the restaurant in the accommodation was closed due to Covid restrictions. There was a supermarket in a km distance. We felt very well during our stay. The bathroom was very tidy. The surrounded nature offers a lot of activities. We came especially to observe grizzlies in the river of the valley. This is a good starting point for it. There are not many options much closer to the viewing platform.

We came to Bella Coola late in the day, tired but without any reservations. The Mountain lodge was fully booked and we could not find any place to stay, and the wonderful lady at the Mountain Lodge called us when she got a cancellation! The room was wonderful and the breakfast was great. Wonderful coffee and everything is home made. They were booked the next night and we found a really seedy place to stay, but we were saved again when she called us about another cancellation. Twice the busy receptionist went out of her way to find us and help us out. Bella Coola is an amazing place, but lodging is tight and I strongly urge that you contact the Mountain lodge and make a reservation.

This lodge is at Hagensborg which is a few kilometers from Bella Coola. The room we had was huge with a view of the mountains and had a kitchen. The breakfast bar was really good with home made granola. The lady at reception was very helpful.

Our two night stay was very comfortable. Because of our short stay, we didn’t utilize the kitchen facilities, other than the fridge, but we loved the living room and built in rock face couch. The owner was very helpful with our questions about The Hill. Breakfast was good.

Great price for a cozy 2 bed room with a small kitchen and appliances. View on the mountains. Nice place to eat at the back of the field where you have access to a real nice BBQ. Staff is super sweet and accomodating

Stayed for 3 nights late September 2019.Comfortable, clean accommodation. Staff very friendly and helpful. Ate in the restaurant for the three nights. Food, service excellent. Great place to explore the area. Saw grizzly bears on two days when out exploring, amazing.

We had wanted to come to Bella Coola for years and now wonder why. Apart from the Hill the long journey in is not particularly inspiring; the town of Bella Coola is well away from the coast and could be construed as "ugly", Hagensborg is just a string of properties alongside Highway 20 and the harbour is ....well a harbour. Unless you are there for the fishing there is little to keep you and the highlight was the very scenic ferry trip out. There are no obvious "safe" hiking trails and so 2 nights proved more than adequate for us. Because the restaurant was closed on the 2 days we were there, we had booked a kitchenette room well in advance and it proved fine. Well stocked and comfortable, we were also alongside a balcony area that was a small meeting place for other guests and it proved to be a definite plus-point. We never experienced the restaurant, but on morning 1 before the grizzly tour the continental breakfast was very skimpy and on morning 2 it remained firmly closed when we left early for the ferry......and let's not forget this ferry is an important part of their business. The grizzly bear tours! We were supposedly there at peak season but saw nothing and one girl at the lodge had floated down the river 4 times without success. We had a nagging feeling that for all the encouraging talk of fresh footprints etc etc the grizzly bears in that area are very thin on the ground and $125 per person fails to acknowledge that fact. Hope over expectation seemed to sum it all up, although less charitable views could have been voiced. You stand an almost equally free chance of sightings at the BC Parks viewing platform. Amazingly we were returning late that day from this platform and saw our only bear in that area in a local garden. Well at least we have finally AND PERMANANTLY scratched the Bella Coola itch.

Bella Coola Mountain Lodge

We spend two nights at the Bella Coola Mountain Lodge in August, and our experience there was very mixed.
The lodge is slightly set back from the road and consists of an attractive wooden structure. Food is excellent, especially at lunch and dinner.
We were, however, shocked with the ugliness of our accommodation, suite # 15. It consists of one large, barren room, badly maintained with stains on the carpet and couch, and houses both kitchen and bedroom. A second bedroom, located at the rear, has no window. It felt more like a nightmare than a welcoming accommodation.
The personnel on the whole were pleasant and attentive, but we experienced the manager as rather aloof, defensive and condescending.
We had booked two Kynoch Adventures Bear Viewing trips ahead of time. On our fist day we had a guide who spoke almost incessantly. While some of his remarks were very informative and interesting, relating to our experience on the river, much of what he spoke about was unrelated and distracted from the ability to simply observe. Our wish for some silence was not heeded.
We were much luckier with our guide on the second day. Unfortunately, and to our disappointment, while finding a number of fresh tracks by the river, we did not see any bears on either day.

Yes you want to see a grizzly bear. Yes you want to float down that river as you watch it eat that salmon. Yes you are coming to see this amazing creature in the most beautiful setting in the world. But trust me there's so much more to it than just seeing a bear. Professional guides Fraser and Holly from Bella Coola mountain lodge and Kynoch Adventures helped me realize this.
Through them I soon realized that the world of the bear in this region is just as important as the bear itself. No one else in the guiding business can touch the experience of seeing the bear in its environment through their eyes. Fraser is not only a biologist but he is a Bella Coola boy through and through. Because of this and his grizzly bear guiding experience he is the most respected amongst his peers and it's no surprise after going on a journey down that river with him. I began to truly understand this harsh but incredibly scenic and beautiful environment. I began to understand through him how the bear thinks lives and coexists with its own. Holly taught me and my family more about the ecology of the forest and it's workings within the web of life in the Bella Coola region. This is why I have no problem stating that you will not truly experience what I call grizzly bear alley until you've booked a trip with them. Yes the other guides and companies will show you a bear but they will not come close to giving you the information and experience that Fraser and Holly will. Thanks again to them for truly understanding how to fill one's dreams in seeing and experiencing this amazing animal in its environment.
