I have just come back from an amazing few days holiday with my wife in northern Italy and I cannot recommend the Il sole Di Ranco highly enough both in terms of the quality of stay and value for money. Quite simply it’s worth every cent.

Detail is an overused phase in hospitality but Il Sole Di Ranco has it at every level; from the white linen tablecloths at breakfast, lunch and dinner to the glasses etched with the hotel’s name; everything speaks quality. And the food was simply sumptuous (fresh, satisfying, tasty) and well complemented by the efficient and attentive service of the waiting team. Our room was elegant, clean and well proportioned and I don’t remember ever sleeping so well.

A huge thank you to Andrea and his team !! You and your family have built something exceptional and we will keep on coming back.
Thank you

We stayed for a week in September 2024. The hotel is well run, we had a large room overlooking Lake Maggiore. The position of Il Sole must be one of the best of any hotel on the lakeside. The gardens were lovely and include a decent size pool with sun beds and umbrellas, all of which were well maintained. Good parking available. The bedroom was comfortable although a little dated. We had lovely views from the balcony and windows of our room. The food in the Restaurant is brilliant as is the service. The staff at the hotel are some of the best we have ever encountered and work together as a team to ensure you have an enjoyable stay. Ranco is a small residential village with few amenities, however, we preferred the peace and quiet to the tourist driven bustle of Stresa and other towns on the west side of the lake. Our thanks to Andrea and everyone at the hotel for making our stay very enjoyable and to Davide, the Chef, for his delicious food.

We stayed at this small but fantastic hotel,14 rooms,in a cosy room.
The hotel has a nice well maintained garden with a rather big swimming pool.
At the terras of the restaurant ,with a panoramic lake view, they serve a delightful breakfast.
Lunch and dinner are also very refined.
But on top there is Andrea and his staff who do everything,in a most friendly way, to comfort you . It goes from tips of the area to help you fix the brakes on your bike
This hotel is highly recommended for a relaxing and carefree holiday

I had already been two/three times to this pleasant restaurant and I was always very satisfied.
But tonight... maybe the chef was on vacation? Is it because it's August? Must have been a night, right?
Fried burnt, cut medium, disappointing amberjack, anonymous octopus. Fortunately really delicious cold spaghetti.
Location always pleasant but the game was not worth the candle.
That's too bad.

Paradise on earth! Pension very well located. We were able to have a room overlooking the lake and enjoy the pool for a relaxing break. Everything was perfect, the staff very considerate and welcoming. Breakfast served at the table with quality products. We recommend without hesitation.

Very nice stay in Ranco right on the lake in the Hotel Il Sole. A hotel in a very beautiful location with lots of Italian style and ambience. Beautifully landscaped park, great big pool and lovely garden terraces. Good food, very friendly staff and owner family. A new discovery for us that we would happily repeat.

An amazing stay, the team were amazing from the moment we booked through to our farewell. The breakfast was tasty and so was dinner. Isolated area but perfect for us. Amazing views over lake Maggiore. Impressive facilities (but chilly for us but in summer will be great)

We decided to spend our last night in the Lake District of Italy in order to be close to Milan airport. My husband "trusted" relais et Chateaux and Michelin and booked this hotel for our last evening. Foolishly he did not check Trip Advisor - a mistake we will never make again). We drove from Bologna expecting to have a last day relaxing by the pool a d enjoying the surroundings. We arrived and walked in and we were greeted by the most unfriendly brusque receptionist i have ever encountered in Italy. She then brought us to the room - as we walked up the stairs we saw the faded stained rugs, the dirty walls. We were then brought into the dark room that was a so called suite with a dank shower and the upstairs on strange bathtub. As soon as the receptionist left I told my husband that under no circumstances were we going to stay at thus hotel. We immediately walked downstairs and stated that we were most disappointed. She gave us this look as if to say she know that we would leave.
It is amazing to me that Relais et Chateaux and Michelin woudl ever give this hotel and recommendations. Surely they have never visited or stayed in a room. Do not make the error we made ( which we corrected by leaving - at the cost of travel time and travel cost) by booking this hotel. If we can prevent one person from making the error we did we will feel that we have done a service to someone. P.S. Always check trip Advisor!

Let's get this clear. Sole di Ranco is a rally excellent restaurant. When you arrive, the directions given are to the car park - Ristorante Sole, not the hotel.

The food in the restaurant is up there with anything I have eaten in Italy and the wine list (let them choose for you) is unbeatable. Plus, when we went to the local wine shop, the price of the wine at the restaurant was not much more than the price at the wine shop, so although the wine is expensive, it is because it is the best available, not because you are being ripped off - that said, dinner for two came to more than the cost of the room, and with there being little in the way of alternatives nearby, you need to budget 240 Euros plus per night for dinner - they do not have a table d'hote. Decor in the restaurant and in the hotel was a little 1970's and tired; it is clear that this is a family and not internationally run hotel and therefoe budgets are not elastic.

The rooms though were disappointing. If I went again, I would choose a standard non lake view room. We chose a lake view junior suite which was a maisonette type arrangement with the lounge in the entrance hall and upstairs, the bedroom and bathroom. Because the bedroom and bathroom is in the roof, there were in fact no windows of any note. This first made the room claustrophobic and secondly, even in Feburary it was hot without the noisy air conditioning machine on (which you could not sleep with being on). Therefore the balcony lake view was downstairs and really the lake view was a waste of money - you want to see the lake from your bed when you wake up. In addition, whilst there was a walk in wardrobe with coat rail, there was no drawer space or facilities whatsoever; you need to keep everything else in your suitcase. TV if you are inclined was a tiny portable tv in the bedroom area. There is one suite in the main building (most of the rooms are in an annex across the courtyard) which is on one floor and not split level, which did look good, and so advice is, unless that suite is not taken up, don't spend extra on this.

Breakfast was small and really not to standard bearing in mind the cost of the room. You can have extras and they are good, but you need to pay extra (minimum of about 5 Euros per item).

What the hotel doesn't advertise enough is the garden which slopes down to the lake and has its own swimming pool (not sure if it is heated).

You arrive in the car park (covered) below the garden and need to walk up the slope. If you arrive or go out late (after 11pm), let the owners know, as they close the gate at that time and you won't be able to get back in without taking your key.

That said, Andrea who runs the hotel and his team are very friendly and will arrange whatever you need. This is a place for good food with some rest in a moderate hotel; in other words a good restaurant with a hotel attached, not the other way round.

Dear Mr BRCOxton_Wirral, I'm sorry to disagree with you, Il Sole is a great place and the feeling you have when you visit it is to enter in a private house with a friendly and discrete service... I can see you had been there in 2007, well 13 years ago says it all.
