The Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo Hotel offers a dynamic atmosphere with lively entertainment, although some guests have reported noise disturbances and varying experiences. While travelers are fond of the picturesque beaches and friendly staff, opinions on the rooms and amenities differ, with some citing maintenance issues and a need for upgrades. Despite the hotel's prime location and commendable cleanliness, there are mixed feelings regarding the value, as some guests find the food quality and service to be lacking.

My husband & I stayed at The Grand Muthu February 14- 21. Check in was the best I have ever experienced. Our building 1B, third floor, room 1425 facing the kids' pool with partial view of the ocean, king size bed, very clean. No problems with A/C or hot water. Bed was a litle hard but slept well all week.
LOVE the spacious lobby with awesome service! Pool bar server Oscar was on the ball and even made me some his specialty drinks as I do not drink beer or sweet drinks. The pool did not feel overcrowded and we had no issues with getting a lounger.
As for the food, it was not bad.At the snack bar you can order fries, hamburgers, hot dogs and ham & cheese sandwich. There is pizza served at the beach snack bar but never got to taste it as people were vultures and they would run out.
The Bad: the main buffet was a nightmare! The food area way to small to accomodate such a large resort. Crazy long line ups, there were two toasters with one not working, cutlery missing on the tables, dirty dishes everywhere and stained chairs. They are understaffed and overworked.
The entertainment was good. They work hard and put on great shows.
Visiting Pillar Beach is a must! absolutely the best beach i have ever been to. You can take a taxi for $5 per person or the double decker bus for $5 per person with your return.
Our housekeeper Wendy did an amazing jog with keeping our room clean with little notes that put a smile on my face.
Would i visit this resort again? not sure as there are so many other places to visit but i will say that my husband and I had a very relaxing week.

This was our second visit to this resort, the first being four months post grand opening. We noticed several changes and most are for the better. We travelled as a group of seven, from Dec.22-Dec.29.
Rooms are still modern and quite large, and still in very good condition. We were in building 4, close to the lobby and pool area, however it was noisy on two nights, due to events happening around the pool area.
The food, in my personal opinion, was very good with many choices on the buffet, but I can see it becoming monotonous on extended stays. We must remember that we are not on an Americanized island and the standards and food availability are definitely different than the Dominican, Jamaica etc. The a’la carts are decent, with the Indian seemingly the crowd favourite.
The pools are a great place to relax and kept in good, clean condition. In my opinion the beach is outstanding, kept mostly clean and free from seaweed and other debris. Playa Pilar is a 5 minute taxi ride away and certainly worth spending at least a day there. Lots of palapa’s and lounge chairs to go around, even with the resort at full capacity. I would suggest that you consider bringing your own beach towels as the ones available require a 15 cuc deposit, and if your towel becomes lost you will have to pay for the replacement.
Lobby and bars are plentiful and most are equipped with espresso machines as well as your mixed drinks.
The staff make your stay so enjoyable. Almost without exception all the staff we encountered were super friendly, personable and positive! They really make your vacation enjoyable and do their best to accommodate any of your requests or concerns. Shout out to Yarosky on the beach and Viktor at the beach bar.
The only negative issues I can relay to you concern some of guests. The amount of pushing and rudeness I witnessed in the cafeteria had me feeling ashamed to be from the same country as them. Same goes for anyplace that saw people lined up to wait for something, ie; lobby bar, poolside bar, etc. Relax people, no one is going to go hungry or miss out on a cold drink or anything!! Unbelievable displays of ignorance, greed, and rudeness, absolutely the worst tourist behaviour I have ever seen on any resort I’ve been to.
The Muthu burger at the 24 hour snack bar is no longer available, come on management, bring that back !!
Overall, a wonderful vacation at a beautiful resort and already we are planning our next visit here for July!!

This resort is arguably the nicest and newest in Cayo Guillermo and even possibly Cayo Coco too. I went when there were less than 30 guests and it was a quiet time but all staff were very attentive and the food was overall really great, some of the best in Cuba yet. Due to the virus food is generally made fresh-to-order and a limited but still amazing buffet is offered. I have seen this resort packed with 500+ people around the pool and it is a real party, also one of the best day parties I've seen in a Cuban resort. Two things I would consider are, the beach isn't as nice as other spots on Cayo Guillermo and is not conveniently located near the resort and room area. It wasn't maintained well because it's in a bad corner where alot of seaweed builds up and also there were only 30 of us so maintenance wasn't a priority obviously. Even when it is cleaned the beach lacks compared to other spots. Luckily you have Playa Pilar pretty close which is arguably the nicest beach stretching in the Cayos. The location is not very good for trade winds and I noticed it gets alot more rain and clouds than the rest of the island. If you're a kitesurfer youll have to walk down the beach a few minutes at least for a good launch and permitted kiting spot. This is a great time to travel if you can do to low capacity leading to greater attention to detail. The staff are all amazing from the bartenders to the entertainers, to the waiters and chefs, gardeners and maids and all else that were not mentioned but still appreciated :) Credit cards are currently the only accepted form of payment along with some Debit Visas but all must be Canadian bank issued, no American affiliate companies will work. It's inconvenient but unfortunately the new implementation by the Cuban Government. Workers still accept tips in cash and prefer Canadian and US bills over their Pesos as they are likely being phased out at the moment and not widely accepted in their local towns anymore. Hygienic products are needed more than ever as far as I know now in case you are wondering what gifts would be appreciated.

The hotel's cleanliness was disgusting! The housekeeping staff can only clean to the level that they are taught and with the products they are supplied.
The worst part of this resort is the food, not just the lack of variety, the toughness of the food, the lack of taste but the food safety of the food. We kept complaining about the temperature of the food in the keep warm buffet. The food was not hot when it is brought out to be served. Those containers are meant to help maintain food temperatures, not heat them up!
I saw one of the food prep people loading up the meat slices without having any plastic gloves on. I asked her where her gloves were! A couple of days before our trip was over, at the buffet I saw a chicken dish where the heat gauge was reading at only 33 degrees celcius, which is very dangerous. The Chef was standing right there when I told him that the food wasn't being kept hot enough. His answer was that they were having trouble with the heater. I point blank told him he was going to make people sick!

This was our first trip to Cuba, we have been many times to the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Jamaica and Costa Rica. I have never had such a worst experience in my life.

If you are expecting to have beer or pop in your mini fridge, forget it. We had it the first 2 days we were there but after that we had to nag the hotel representative and complain every day.

Went to visit the Grand Muthu Cayo Guillermo in October 2020 and had an amazing experience! There were only 28 people on the resort so it felt like we had the whole thing to ourselves. Safety procedures were in place like temperature checks and mandatory COVID-19 test at the airport (in both the mouth and nose). Results were delivered right to the hotel and everyone was negative so it was almost like living in a safe cohort in the resort. Masks were not required and food was served by staff safely. Staff went above and beyond for us including animal towels in room, poolside drink service and one staff member (I believe his name was Oscar). The staff were fun and accommodating and they made the most of what they had with limited people staying there and limited resources. Note that you should not expect gourmet food as Cuba has limited product, BUT know that they are trying their best with what they have! Each night a different restaurant is open so be aware that you do not have a selection of where to eat. Ask for a quest sandwich at the snack bar (grilled cheese) as they don't tell you about it but its really good! The pool is beautiful and well kept, the beach is walking distance and they provide beach chairs, catamaran, kayaks for FREE! Theres also a very convenient beach bar. Staff are always raking up seaweed and doing the best they can but there was seaweed on the beach most times. Sand on the beach is SO soft and beautiful and water has great conditions for swimming. Spa on the resort is amazing and they give the best full body massage! You can spend a whole day at the spa as they have beautiful pools/showers, hot and wet saunas. All in all I had an amazing time at this resort. The staff went above and beyond making great drinks (lobby bar). Staff also did their best to accommodate the guests and help us to have a fun and memorable vacation!

Had a great vacation March 7th to the 14th. The shows at 9:30 every night are a must to see. The dancers put on a very good show. Some of the entertainers teach dance moves to the guests at 9pm before the show. Jose Gomez one of the entertainers teachs the dances on Friday night & is easy to follow & speaks 5 languages. Our room was always cleaned by lunch time & never a shortage of beach towels at the pool exchange every day. Large selection of food to choose from at the buffet but food needs to be a lot hot. Bartenders at the beach & swim up bar are the best for making drinks. Never big line ups. Main bar needs to stay open till at least 12am as some nights at 24hr snack bar had to wait in a lineup along the bar for a drink with a couple bartenders on. Very clean resort.& kids pool was cleaned before 9am every morning as Our room was in building 3 by the kids pool & every morning the pool guy was out vacuuming the pool when we went for breakfast around 8:30.

We went the week of Feb 08 to Feb 15.

***this resort is an island off an island and prone to not receiving frequent inventory***

Best way for me to review the different aspects is a 1 to 10 scale.

1 is bad: 10 is excellent

Resort Busy-ness (# of guests staying): 8/10

Safe feeling: 9/10

Beach Quality: 7/10 (wasnt fine sand but more grainy feeling on the feet)

Pool quality: 7.5/10 (day beds were very stained)

Cleanliness Overall: 6/10

Room cleanliness: 6/10
Buffet cleanliness: 4/10
All chairs stained and not pretty to look at. I had a hard time at first with this but had to get over it as it's the only place to sit.
No bowls for cereal for kiddos. We used the available soup bowls for cereal.
Bread was delicious. Desserts were 6/10. Spoons available when requested.

Buffet staff: 7/10

Food Overall: 5.5/10

Buffet food options: 5/10 (long wait time for fresh cooked pasta/meat which caused buffet congestion. Fresh food quality: 7/10)

Buffet Size: small for # of guests

Food Seafood a la cart: 4/10 (paid extra for lobster meal which turned the rating from 3 to 4)

Food Indian a la cart: 9/10

A la Cart availability: 1/10
We tried booking our 3 a la cart options on day 2 for 7 adults and 2 kids. We were willing to sit at split tables too. 3 restaurant options indian, seafood, Italian and International which closed.
We were told our only option was indian on day 5 and seafood on day 6. We were not able to choose when we can dine.

24hr Snackbar food quality: 6.5/10
Burgers, hot dogs, fries, ham and cheese sandwiches with a very small buffet at lunch.

Staff Friendliness: 5/10 half were really nice and other half were not as personable. Groundskeepers/room cleaners were some of the friendliest

Entertainment: 9/10 (pool show was excellent)

Alcohol availability: 5/10 (bars would run out of common drinks)

Wifi availability: 1 peso/hr (can turn wifi off to preserve the rest of the hour when needed)

Wifi coverage: good. Good internet speeds

Weather was beautiful however slightly windy at times.

Overall we would not come back nor reccomend this resort for the price we paid for our stay. (2 adults and 1 toddler approx $3200. Would go back if price was closer to $2500)

Traveled as family of 4, with 2 girls age 3 & 5. First trip to Cuba, I would say the hotel itself is avg to avg +, seems to be fairly well maintained. Grounds are very well kept. Some things you can tell are showing some age, but nothing that would affect your stay. I would say a good pressure wash for the pool area would be well worth it. Food was "meh", but you will not go hungry & can always find something. The A la Cartes are quite good, with excellent service. Buffet service is very good as well. All staff are excellent, they will go out of their way to help you in anyway & get you whatever you need. Entertainment staff is fantastic, very friendly & upbeat, always smiling & inviting you to participate in the activities, our girls loved them all. Beach was excellent, helpful chair attendants there. It was quite windy while we were there, but that is not the hotel or staff's fault. Would be nice to have a pool out of the wind a bit as the ones they do have are right off the ocean, which provide an AMAZING view, but little relief from the wind. We did not use the Kids Club, but did attend the kids shows in the evening with those staff though & they were great! All evening shows were really good, very talented dancers that you can tell work very hard! Overall, I would recommend this place to friends, I feel we got good value for the price we paid. Ride from the airport was quick! 25 mins on arrival, 40 mins on return (depends on how many stops you have to make I guess). No bug issues.

My son who’s 9 & and I just spent a week at the Grand Muthu and even though I try not to go the same place twice we will definitely be back. The rooms are clean, the food is plentiful and tasty, the beach is beautiful, and staff are always smiling. There was always other kids to play with but the activities staff by the pool were really great with my son getting him (and me) participating in games and having fun, I can’t remember everyone’s names but Denise and Carlos were really wonderful with him.
Our Transat rep at the hotel was incredibly helpful and informative, we booked a few excursions and had an amazing time on all of them.
The resort did not feel like it was over crowded and you could always find a lounge chair at both the pool and beach.
I wasn’t overly impressed with the maid service in the room, the one day the regular person was off it was the cleanest day of the entire week. The only real complaints I have are the ignorance and lack of manners & respect from some of the other guests which is not the resorts fault. We did have an issue with the toilet not working in our room one afternoon and called to have it looked at. We were told to wait in the room and someone would come right away but no one came. Called again a couple hours later and was told someone would be right there only to yet again wait for no one. I got impatient and managed to fix it myself that night, it wasn’t until 10am the next day that someone from maintenance knocked on the door. A complete waste of an afternoon waiting around for nothing but on the grand scale, not life altering. (We did accidentally get locked out of the I room safe one day and when we called the gentleman that came was there in 5 minutes, had us fixed quickly and with a smile)
We’ve been to the DR & Cuba multiple times before but never had such a great overall experience on any vacation anywhere else. It truly was a trip to remember and my son is already starting to fill the trip piggy bank.

I’ve been watching the reviews before and after we booked our vacation to this resort. I heard the buffet was terrible and the food was always cold, the chairs were stained, they never had any plates etc but I thought people we exaggerating. Let me tell you, they were not!! We would go to the buffet and there would be no plates available! Excuse me? I’ve never seen this before! Guess we weren’t eating! The buffet was crazy busy, food was terrible, cold, and they would never have enough. The dining room chairs were disgusting from stains and usually wet. I’d rather have stood up to eat! We would go to the buffet an hour after opening for breakfast/lunch and there was no food left. If you didn’t line up 20 minutes before dinner, you would be waiting for 30 minutes+ to get food. The layout was terrible. We lived mainly on ham and cheese sandwiches (since they ran out of hot dogs 5/7 days we were there) At certain times, I actually wondered what my 2.5 year old would be able to eat that day.

Italian restaurant was great. Service was fast. We had reservations at the international a la carte and when we arrived, we were told they were closed due to “bad water”. Ummmm ?? Thanks for telling us ahead of time!

The hotel itself is nice and the rooms were clean. We did have a few issues with a couple of the bartenders not being very polite or friendly and would serve other people first even if they saw we were standing there.

Definitely not a 4-4.5 star resort. Barely a 3 in my opinion. How do we get a refund??
