My girlfriend and I had a Wonderbox voucher to spend. This hotel was on the list. I chose it for its proximity to the Isle of Ré. First of all - be warned. This hotel is NOT walking or cycling distance to La Rochelle or the island. Yes it’s doable, and yes we did it, but the weather on The French Atlantic coast can be wet to put it mildly, and they seem to not believe in street lights along cycle lanes. The result was one of te toughest one-hour cycles, not because of altitude but because of the sheer darkness, rain and unpleasantness. Second warning - the hotel is practically unreachable by phone and even on site, it is a challenge to find a receptionist. Even when calling from the room. So if customer service is high on your priorities, go somewhere else. They are friendly when they’re around however! The hotel itself is not bad. It is indeed a castle but surrounded by ugly new builds. The grounds are nice although unexploited. The rooms are of a good size but the bathroom sink wouldn’t drain correctly. And no staff to sort that of course. The spa is nothing more than a basement pool and a sauna closed because of Covid nonsense. But it was pleasant. On the final day, we had the 29 euro set meal as part of our package, with a free glass of champagne. I wager it was prosecco… the meal was lacklustre. Acceptable but uninspired. Think overcooked vegetables and crispy rice. Overcooking rice is a challenging feat and yet they managed it here. Otherwise the wine was decent and the overall flavours in the menu pleasant. La Rochelle is not the most interesting town and people are rather “French”. By that I mean that museums will turn you away if you arrive 3 minutes late, staff take forever, and everyone always has an excuse as to why the service is so shoddy. However, the isle of Ré remains one of the most magnificent places in France and always worth a detour. But save yourself the hassle and stay on the island itself!! (The toll costs 16 euros return) (If you do rent bikes - speak to Arthur at cycloparc. He was fantastic and you can park your car free of charge on Chemin des Remparts or the casino side of Avenue du Mail…) Oh and another positive note - the hotel is not far from the Marais Poitevin!…
We booked a room at the Hotel du Château this summer. The building is beautiful BUT it is just in front of a family complex with an outdoor swimming pool which is loud and ugly. We also had a bad experience with the staff and restaurant so we do not believe it is up to the price or standard.
This was no 4* and no SPA. Room: no slippers, no shower caps, no sanitary kit like crème etc, awful design with a bath right in front of your bed without curtains, almost no wifi connection in the rooms, dusty ventilation grid, reception service not permanent, nothing in the mini-bar... So called SPA: just some dirty tiny swimming something. Staff: remarkably unfriendly and indifferent “responsable de l’hébergement” Mme Mélanie Gevrey. Very poor pathetic place.
We chose this country house because it is convenient for La Rochelle airport. Our well-sized room was beautifully furnished with an (unnecessarily) large bathroom and shower. The ambience is quiet. Bed was fairly comfortable. The internet connection was variable. There was ample free parking in the front grounds. Hotel has a restaurant in site but we cannot comment as we did not eat there.
We took the Prestige Room on the Ground Floor. Excellent large walk-in shower, separate WC and comfortable Bed. Additional seating area outside of the French Doors, which was pleasant considering the weather. Great Price and booked same day on Booking.com.
