Actually NYC is one of the easiest start-points for getting to Dominica. Have you looked at Jet Blue via San Juan or St Lucia or AA via San Jan? Also check out Norwegian Airlines. They have very cheap fairs to the French Islands - Martinique and Guadeloupe. From their you can fly or take a ferry.
