Detailed Reviews
This place is very very expensive within a Brazilian context and we were therefore expecting quite a lot. One night here (including full board) costs more than two times the Brazilian monthly minimum wage.
We had a beachfront suite on the ground floor which was great because we could walk straight out and on to the beach. The interior of our room, however, was a bit disappointing. The white and beige decor was uninspired and the white plastic sofas were not a hit. The room smelled a bit moldy and both air conditioners were sometimes dripping water inside the rooms. The bathroom was good with a great shower, fluffy towels and nice toiletries. The rooms and communal areas were clean. The beach inside the resort was a bit disappointing due to the sea not being crystal clear and transparent unlike most of the other beaches in the area. However the waves are small and the water is calm and family friendly. The breakfast was good with lots of choice of both hot and cold options but the food at the buffet for lunch and dinner was okay but not more than that. There was a lot of choice but the food could have been a bit more sophisticated at times. Again, considering the prices. The room service menu was extremely limited (burger and chips, hotdog, club sandwich, ham and cheese sandwich and a couple other such options) and very slow. The kids club was very good though. There is a large children’s area with pool, toys, football pitch and lots of staff to keep the children busy. There is even the option of a children’s eating area where kids can eat with their new friends supervised by hotel staff. The live music in the evening was a real high light. It was high quality and nothing like the tourist entertainment cliches which one might have feared. The ‘safari’ is fun but it did feel a little rushed. We didn’t have time to take it all in and appreciate the surrounding nature which is truly breathtaking. The safari costs 100R$ per person. We also rented a private boat at the marina and sailed to Ilha Grande island which was amazing! We were quoted prizes between 2500R$ - 5500R$ depending on the size of the boat and duration of the trip. There is also the far cheaper option of going with a public tourist boat. Seeing the Green Coast and Ilha Grande from the sea is really special and we highly recommend it. The staff at the resort were friendly and polite but perhaps could do with more training. The resort is priced within a segment where guests expect a lot and because of that we were slightly disappointed. The rooms need improving and so does the service. Service needs to be quicker and the staff need to be taught the more refined details of dining/serving etiquette and high end service.

The “Spa” has good food, clean rooms and very friendly waiters!
But if you are looking for fun with your family, this is not the place. We were listening to music at the pool and they told us to turn the music off. This place is not for having fun with your family like you do in Caribbean Islands. My advice, go to Cuba, Costa Rica, Mexico etc.

The Portobello safari resort is in very nice location. We took two rooms ocean front with a nice view. The room is comfortable but I think that is missing a modernization. There are two main restaurants and the food is really good. The staff is very attentive.

Rooms are big and confortable. New linen, plasma tv with cable, ac, minibar, confortable beds, outsdanding service and great restaurants. Good shower. Rooms on the first floor have direct access to the beach. Great place for anyone. The property has a marina and it is quite easy to arrange a tour to the islands nearby. They also a small petting zoo, 3 restaurants, a cool bar with live music on the weekends nights and a kids club. Soccer fields, tennis court, and a calm and safe beach in front for swimming. If you donot like beach, there is a good pool. They offer pretty much everything, and work in those all inclusive deals, were you get breakfast, lunch amd dinner included. Totaaly worth going, place is beautiful.

I spend three nights in the hotel for a conference was being held there. Indeed, the location and surroundings of the resort are good. The room was like fifteen meters in front of the seashore. The common areas were nice and there is a lot to do in the hotel. However, in one of the nights I spent there a big party (with very very loud music) was taking place in an area pretty close to the rooms. I called three times to the reception and their awnser was that thay were sorry for the disturb but they couldn´t do anything, as they had a contract with the party organizers. The loud music kept on until 2:30 am... If one wants a good night sleep forget it...
Besides that, wi-fi was not working in my room, although they inform all rooms have wi-fi access.

The hotel is at the beach, and very close to the ocean. You wake up open the windows, and wow! It is not the most luxurious hotel (and the price is not of one either), but who needs that when you have one of the most gorgeous beaches in front of you. There are also dark green mountains in the back of the hotel and a farm with a little zoo (great for kids). One of the best travel experiences my husband and I had.

We stayed at the Portobello in March 03. The resort is nicely located, close to the coast highway and next to a marina. The beach is excellent. The hotel consists of a Polynesian-style open central building with restaurants and shops and a 2-3-floor building with the rooms. They are pretty simple and not in line with the luxurious setting. Furniture is modest, a/c is loud. Beware of arguments with the management on price, we never got our case resolved as they refuse to answer emails.

We picked-up this hotel to spend 5 days just the four of us (Me, my wife, my son 3y and my daughter 10m). Couple of reasons for that: beach hotel, all meals included, not as far from Rio de Janeiro (less than 2 hours drive) and plenty of kids attraction. We decided for the ground room, beach balcony what actually showed as a great decision - highly recommend on our POV. Our kids loved the Safari & Fazendinha (little farm). It was really great to have this contact with nature. The kids park is ok, with some fun for the youngers. Pool is good with a warmed Jacuzzi in one of the corners. Hotel activities are more likely water sports, nature trips, horse hides, etc. Don't expect to find a "Club Med" type of place with GO all around (what I have to confess I don't like at all). Food is very good, changing menu every day. Time schedule for meals are good as well.
On staffing we definitely met some very friendly people that made all difference during all stay. Adão (from little farm), Ronaldo (from pizza place), Michel (staff manager), Natalia, Nathan and Nazaré (restaurant), Fernando (grill), Elinho (recreation) are some people we would like to nominate (but not limited to them). They were great, a lot of passion on what they do. On the other hand, suggest hotel management to take some time on setting some of the standards for guest treatment (one other staff called me “pal”). Not a big deal – but I would rather be treated as “mister”. I suspect that there is some turnover and staff training may be a challenge – again, not a big issue.
Michel made the difference when he realized that me and my wife were having a hard time trying to have lunch and our son was spinning around . He asked one of his staffs (Nathan) to stick around with my 3Y old boy while me and my wife were having dinner. It made us all difference.
We will definitely come back in the future.

Quite close te Rio de Janeiro, this hotel did not fullfill my expectations. The food is fine, the entertainment options were fine with few aquatic sports and fun. Oh, and their was only one swimming pool for the whole hotel.

If you can´t go to Mexico this is a fairly good option as it is close to Rio and a half decent road will let you get there from Rio in about 2 hrs. BUT, and that is a big BUT, as long as you don´t mind waking up early to the very loud sound of music and a would be talk-show presenter, hosting some kind of event. And the good news is that it lasts all day and most of the night. Complaining is useless as they rent out the resort space to different companies to conduct events and cannot control them. Other negatives are the incredibly overpriced wine ¨selection¨, the cost of extras and a pitiful wi-fi signal. But the beach is close to the rooms and there are no tsunamis...
