Short of words to express the experience and aura this place and Mr Heprit carries. If I may give the credit, this is the best place of accommodation I've spent my night at, in the 18 states that I've traveled within India. Both the place and fellow travelers (read backpackers) you meet here, undoubtedly make it a home away from...

We saw the sign for this place on the road from Shillong to Cherrapunjee- only 250 rupees per person. It is very simple but if you are on a budget and want to know about the area, this a great option.

Where do i start. Conveniently located near the shared taxi stand in sohra. This places is only recommend for backpackers not luxury travelers, because this place is not for fancy tourists . the hostel is small yet beautifull with some scenic views. Hostel has dorms aswell as private rooms. There are no private toilets/washroom. The rooms and both the common...

This is a simple place with clean bed-sheets and common toilets, which are very well maintained. The owner is a nice chap, who doesn't entertain noisy and party type crowds.. There is a grocery shop in the same building, which sells packaged stuff. For food, you have to walk about 10 mins away, where there are 2 hotels, selling good...

Planned to stay one night, ended up staying 4... Harpreet (owner) is a great, so friendly and welcoming, and really enthusiastic about the local area. Hospitality second to none. The place I super clean - one of the cleanest places I've stayed in India! Good location for exploring the root-bridges at Nongriat. Perfect place to chill and shoot-the-breeze for a...

I spent five days here and it was absolutely brilliant. The rooms are spotless, the bathrooms are clean, you can turn on the geyser and have a hot shower any time of day. Heprit was lovely, helpful and told us of some local gems. You can get food from the market lane which is a two minute walk from here....

We just needed a place to stay, but for our great surprise we found a gem! It was one of the best backpackers places we had ever visited. The room was tidy and clean, as the toilets. The owner, Heprit, was very welcoming, recommended us places to see around Cherrapunjee and even taught us some of the local Kasi language....

The rooms and the toilets are super clean. Heprit is a good host who loves to direct you to the best places in Sohra. While this may not be the ideal place for a family, a backpacker/student is likely to have a time of his/her life over here!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
By The Way is "A HOME AWAY FROM HOME" for Backpackers, is in Lower Cherrapunjee, Dukan Road. The location is on the main road, just before the Petrol Pump Station (Indian Oil) where the ATM is also there, on the right when you are coming from Shillong. It has 3 (three) rooms: 2 (two) dorm rooms with 3 (three) beds each and another single room with double bed and no attached bathroom in all these rooms.Opened on 1 June 2012 i started it when i met two Backpackers from Sweden while i was an auto-rickshaw driver, they wanted a cheap place to stay since the hotels/lodges here in cherrapunjee is beyond their budget. As i had a free room, so i let them stay in my place. Then an idea strikes to my mind that i should open a cheap place for Budget Travelers and Backpackers. Backpackers started to come and stay in my place and suggested me that i should give a name. Since it is by the side of the road and the cheapest place to stay in cherrapunjee so, i named it 'By The Way' ... more   less
