The travel arrangements were well thought out by the Lodge. The cabin was comfortable but lacked any shelves or hangers for clothing. The food was great and the service in the lodge was very attentive. Two problems: the late fall trout bonanza hasn't worked the past couple of years because the lake has been too warm. Not the lodges fault but be aware. And second, if you go late in the season you will not get a "legendary" guide, and maybe not even a guide at all. On a six day trip, we only had a guide for one day, which made the fishing very average at best, and a lot of money for what turned into a mediocre fishing experience.

We had a wonderful trip. The first night we were fortunate enough to see the northern lights. The food was excellent! The staff was very attentive and went out of their way to make us feel welcome. The fishing guides were knowledgable and helpful. The fishing was great with multiple trophies caught in our group. I did a one day fly out and caught dozens of walleye and northerns, including my first Master Angler Norther Pike!

Our trip was good, food and lodging good. However, our guide was disappointing. He took pictures that he didn't share, met with his friends for shore lunch when we told him we didn't want shore lunch. He left us sitting in the boat.

Wonderful place, lodge, cabins and grounds very well kept. Staff was very enjoyable to be around. We had a wonderful guide (Ernest). I do wish we had gotten in some good walleye fishing but it wasn’t to be. All in all it was a great trip.

It was a fishing trip of a lifetime. The staff and accomdations were truly outstanding. It was our first experience catching northern pike and walleyes. A special treat was the fried fish shore lunches. After a great day on the lake, the dinners were truly special.

While my son and I enjoyed our trip, there were several issues that prevented me from giving Kissising Lake Lodge a higher review. First, the good news: the kitchen and serving staff were excellent. The main lodge was very nice, with ample space to relax and talk fishing after a day on the lake. In fact, this was the best aspect of the trip. The food was good, not great, but again, after a long day on the water, dinner was more than satisfying. Now the bad news: for the price of the four day fishing package, everything should be just about perfect, and unfortunately, almost none of the experiences were as perfect as they should, or could, be. It starts with the fishing. There is no way that catches of 100 fish per day per person are "not uncommon". In fact, they must be very uncommon as none of our guides could tell us of any 100 fish per person days in their experience. It makes sense though, what we saw were several boats fishing the same "great spots" every day we fished. With the pressure on to catch a few fish for each day's shore lunch, multiple fish are pulled out of these same spots day after day. Although a huge lake with thousands of bays and islands, it seems to have been effectively overfished. When we did find a school of walleyes on the last day, we were forced to stop fishing for them, well before any "100 fish" day due to running out of minnows, (this after the other two boats that were with us on that spot left us their two packs of minnows to use when they left, looking for pike). Of course, if our guide had not been using those same minnows to catch walleyes alongside us, WE, the paying clients, would have been able to catch a few more. I asked him to use twister tails on his jigs so that my son and I could use the minnows, he simply said, "no, I'm OK using minnows". Of course this episode touches on another of the big issues at Kississing: the "legendary" guides. Our guide was eighteen years old, in his second year of guiding. How does one achieve legendary status in such a short time. It certainly seemed that he only knew to fish those few places that he had been shown last year as a rookie. There were several times where we suggested locations based on the wind direction, shoreline makeup, type of weeds, etc., trying to duplicate conditions that had been somewhat productive. If we have to ask to return to areas that produced, or develop new areas in order to catch a few more, he is not doing his job. But, it also seemed that catching a lot of fish was not really the goal of the guides. They stressed fishing for trophies only, knowing that this direction would reduce the catch numbers. Hey, if you can't catch a lot of pike as promised, maybe get a trophy so that the customers won't be too disappointed. The guides also seemed to love to make long runs in the boats, severely reducing fishing time. In a lake as big as Kississing, why do you need to run 12-15 , miles to the west end to catch fish? In a catch and release lake, you should be able to catch fish right around the first bend. Again, it seemed like just another stalling tactic. Another guide issue: they are responsible for packing the supplies for the shore lunch, (delicious, by the way). Upon arrival at our fly-out to Crow Lake, (our guide's third trip to that lake in two years), he discovered that we had no plates. no silverware, and no napkins, we made it work, but, again, this is supposed to be a five-star experience, not a "eat beans with your fingers" experience. Of course, the fishing at Crow Lake was so bad, we almost didn't need to worry about fried fish for our lunch, (a 1:00 pm fish fixed the problem for a late lunch). If I can request that the kitchen pack a lunch for me as an alternative to the shore lunch, why can't the kitchen pack the shore lunch supplies for the guides as well? Our fly-out exposed yet another issue: there seemed to be a total lack of control of plane and pilot availability. We were rescheduled from our planned Saturday to Friday, then told that the plane wouldn't be at Kississing until 10:00 am for our pick up. Of course, that changed on Friday morning when the pick up time changed again, this time in our favor as it actually arrived at 8:45. So, rather than wait and lose the fishing time, we did go right around the corner and actually caught a pike, (told you there were some inside the 40 minute boat ride radius). Continuing on the fly-out theme, we heard rumor from other guests that their guides had told them that Crow Lake was a waste of time, and that the guides felt this lake is so bad that it should be removed from the fly out list! Other reviews cite the nickel and dime aspects of the package as well. This is certainly true. We joked to ourselves that we were afraid to ask for more butter for our toast - it might show up on our bill. At these prices, this package should include beer and soft drinks, fishing gear, (although the lodge supplied rod and reels are the cheapest combinations that you could imagine - thankfully, we brought our own). We rented a tackle box, as we were not sure what spoons, etc., to bring. For $60 for the box, I only used three of the spoons. I then felt compelled to buy these same three lures a-la-cart in order to have multiples in case we lost one to a snag or fish. Of course, Kississing asked a premium price for these lures. Lastly: while the kitchen and service staff were exceptional, they are not equipped to run this company. It was a constant topic of conversation among the guests - where were the adults? For this amount of money, I expected to be met by someone in charge, someone capable of running a five star operation. Kississing Lake Lodge appears to be coasting along with no major issues, but plenty of small things that really start to add up to hurt the five-star experience. Kississing messed up our returning night hotel , reservation, making it for the following evening instead. This led to us making flight arrangements for the following, wrong, day. Of course, we had an extra day in Winnipeg because of this! So, after a cancelled flight out of Toronto, (not the fault of Kississing), I am finally home on Wednesday - 69 hours after my last cast! While Kississing did take steps to limit the damage done by the mistaken reservation, it's just another example of less than five-star service. My advice to Kississing is: manage your company with an active interest. Five-star doesn't happen by accident. As currently staffed and managed Kississing does not provide the experience as promised on the website and other advertisements.

Response from The Kississing Family Lodges, General Manager at Kississing Lake Lodge
Responded Aug 14, 2023
Hi Randy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your feedback with us. On behalf of all of us here at Kississing Lodge, I sincerely apologize that your trip was not everything that you had hoped it to be. I can assure you that your concerns are taken seriously and your feedback is valuable to us. Our staff work hard to provide our guest's with an amazing and memorable adventure in Canada's North, so we are very sorry and dissapointed to hear that this was not your experience. We are glad to hear that you found the service to be to your liking and you enjoyed the lounge in the evenings. Upon reaching out to the lodge staff, we have established an understanding over the logistical complications you had during your stay, specifically regarding your fly-out. Unfortunley, during your stay, we had a very large portion of guests inquiring to fly-out which created some complicated scheduling. Ultimataly, they worked hard to ensure you were able to depart as early in the day as possible, but we apologize that this made for last minute changes in your departure time and that our availability was not communicated more clearly. Crow Lake has been an incredibly successful lake for many years, but with low water levels this year, high winds cause the bottom of the lake to be stirred up, creating less than ideal fishing conditions. We have taken your concerns about Crow Lake seriously and have started to encourage alternative fly out lakes to our clients, upon recommendation from our senior guides, until we know the conditions there have improved. Again, thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. Ultimately, we love what we do and are passionate about providing our guests with outstanding service and a memorable fishing experience. Sincerely, Curt, Juanita, Family and Kississing Lodge Staff

Our fishing guide was excellent, he worked hard, had excellent knowledge of Lake. We caught about 50 walleye each morning and 50 northern pike each afternoon. Food: Breakfast very good, Dinner average. Shore lunches were very good. Accommodations were fine, cabins clean. Service was very good. Staff was very friendly and accommodating. On prices, if not in plan, very high. Rod and reel rental with a tackle box was $160 , you could buy a rod & reel like these for $70-80 combo set all day in US. $50 would be high, but more reasonable. At dinner, even a coke was extra, seemed excessive. You should get a coke and beer each day as part of plan. Most annoying was we all got up about 2:30am to travel, and the float plane to resort took 2 trips. We waited 1 1/2 hrs on float plane to fly us to resort, had a late dinner. Same problem going back, had to wait 1 1/2 hrs on 2nd set of passengers. Somehow need to have enough planes to fly all at same time. Last, no idea we would have $725 US dollars in taxes, should have been mentioned up front. Total trip cost is more like $6,500 per person for 4 days.

Truly a great experience as my grandson is still talking about the experience of fishing for Pike and Walleye. He also enjoyed the float plane rides to and from the lodge. The cookouts with fresh catch with the guides were incredible. I am sure he will travel again to Canada to fish. Food at the lodge and accommodations were first class.
