Hotel Playa Cayo Santa María seems to strike a balance in guest experiences, with many visitors enjoying the varied dining options, beautiful beaches, and lively entertainment that contribute to the hotel's vibrant atmosphere. Cleanliness is generally commended, with the majority of guests finding the rooms and grounds well-maintained, although some have encountered issues with room upkeep.
While some guests have noted outdated furnishings and mold in rooms, the allure of the hotel is often found in its value, especially considering the lower price point. However, opinions are mixed regarding the food quality and service, with reports of both friendly staff and occasional slow service.

We were at Playa Cayo Santa Maria last week and just returned. Overall great people at the hotel, initial room had issues (main floor) but resolved when we called reception and our room was changed. Breakfast at the buffet was ok, but I have to say our server was great (Abel). Dinner we had pizza, Jorge was awesome he made our pizzas just right. At the Snack bar Punta Arena we were very welcomed by Avelino and Reinier, these two provided exceptional service. The others at the snack bar were also great.
Overall the experience was great, if your going to the beach make sure to have mosquito spray specially early am (7am I got ton of bites, but I should have sprayed my self).
Coconut water was ample, it’s alway a must for us. The beach bar attendants were also really friendly.
Seafood restaurant has lobster (half), it was nice. But we did also pay and eat at the other Restaurant in the hotel by building 7 and it was a Whole lobster.
What this hotel could improve on is cleaning when there is spills or incidents, I found it took much longer vs other hotels I’ve been too. Also, spoons and plates were not That clean on the main buffet, some plates had odours like egg, hopefully they improve on this.
The internet is free for 1hr/day since it was two adults they gave us 1hr/each per day. Keep in mind it’s a sum of 7hrs for the 7 days so use up one and then the other if you can. Note that once your check out it will cut off the internet which is free, we lost 3hrs thinking it won’t Cut off.
Bar had top shelf liquor Glenlevit and Chivas 12yr which is included (best part for me).
Btw the Catamaran on the beach is free which is great, just tipped them as always.

We travelled to the Hotel Playa Cayo Santa Maria on January 28th for our first trip to Cuba. The area has been developed for tourists, and the staff at the resort do an incredible job. None of them live in the area so in addition to their long hours of work they ride a bus both ways to get to the hotel. We had been told you go to Cuba because the Cuban people are so kind and considerate, and we met many there who were exactly that.
Rosi and Elaine work in Customer Service, and they were incredible. They did whatever they could to make our holiday wonderful. Any requests we made were handled very quickly and efficiently.
At the buffet, we met many servers who were very pleasant. Ariel and Ramsay were so attentive, we tried to sit in their areas whenever we could.
We were in building Nine, and at the pool closest to our building there was a bartender, Javier. He made the best pina colada anywhere in the resort :)
Most of the stay our chambermaid was Evelyn, she cleaned our room, put towel art on the bed, left us notes of appreciation, and wished us a good day every time we saw her.
We also wanted to mention Meive, the waitress at the shish kabob restaurant. Her tolerance for intoxicated clients was amazing.
One of the highlights of our trip was a day in a taxi, when we saw Caibarien, Remedios and Santa Clara. We asked to see the real Cuba and we did - shelves of stores that sit empty due to the embargo. Prices that are incredibly high when you consider the salaries at the resorts. And people who are so proud of their country. The resort always had more than enough food and supplies for guests, that does not seem to be the case for the Cuban people.
Hotel Playa Cayo Santa Maria sits on a very beautiful white sand beach and the turquoise water was beautiful as well. If you go prepared to enjoy the best Cuba has to offer, you will have a wonderful experience. Take your own face cloths, and in you need peanut butter in your day take it as well. There is so much we take for granted living in Canada.

My family of 4 stayed at Playa Cayo Santa Maria from Dec. 27- Jan.3. We checked in at 12:00 am and it went smoothly. My travel agent had requested connecting rooms but there was no availability at that moment. Therefore they gave us 2 separate rooms on the same floor. As we were with other families our rooms were in separate buildings...one of the older ones but when we requested a room change the hotel accommodated us to the same building as the other families that we were with. The rooms were a little out dated but ok. Some rooms had walk in showers and others had bath tubs with a shower head. If requesting a room in advance choose the 2nd or 3rd floor but there are no elevators.
The beach was beautiful..one of the nicest ones we’ve visited. White sand and clear ocean water. We encountered a few jelly fish but no big deal. There are employees to help you with the beach chairs but to get a nice spot on the beach you need to go before 9:00 and reserve your chairs. There were a few choices to choose from at the main buffet for breakfast or lunch and dinner. The buffet at the beach was average but they also grilled fresh fish and meat or a choice of différent oven baked pizzas. The grill at the beach was very good with a choice of panini pressed hotdogs or sandwiches. We went to 2 al a carte restaurants which you need to reserve in advance. One was the Asian which we did not enjoy too much and the other was the seafood restaurant which was also okay. The shows at the theatre were good, the lobby served different types of coffees and drinks. There is a gift shop and an exchange bureau on site. The 24 hr snack bar was good too! The margarita pizza and fries were very good. 4 large pools around the resort.
All in all we had a good time and would return to Cuba.

If you spend less than 1000 dollars for 1 week away then this is a great value resort. The drinks were tasty and food was of decent quality (Nobody in my party got sick!). By far the best part of the resort was the beach, it was what you'd expect to see on a postcard with turquoise water and white sands.
The public bathrooms are in need of some refreshing (which they've started and look really great) and the infrastructure would be good when the hotel is NOT at capacity. When we attended the week before Christmas 2019, the resort was at/over capacity per the waiters we spoke with so lineups at the buffet for fresh hot food like fish/meat/pizza were 45 minutes to 1 hour long. The snack bar was only ever staffed by 1 cook (per our waiters who brought drinks at lightning speed) which meant waiting 1 hour for what normally would take 5 minutes for a tortilla pizza. The chairs at the main pool and the beach filled up quick unless you were there early (i.e. 7-8AM). The hotel staff/waiters were very polite and respectful, no complaints there. The late night beach party put on by the resort was a nice and welcomed change from the normal all inclusive you would find in Cuba.
Overall we were not disappointed by the resort (we'd consider it a 3.5-4 star) as we needed R&R and understood we needed some patience to get things like food at the buffet. We saw lots of young families who seemed to be having a fun time which is a good thing. We did get a few days of rain, which sent the resort/animation team into a bit of a panic given the large number of people there - my suggestion is bring playing cards just in case. If you are used to a 4.5/5 star experience in somewhere more lavish like Mexico or Dominican Republic then I would suggest you stay away from this place.

The best parts were the ice cream bar and and the coffee bar. I did have a couple of problems there. The first was the fridge in the room. It was so noisy that I couldn't sleep. I had to unplug it and then plug it back in when I wake. If I forget to plug it back in, then I arrive back in my room after a day in the sun and find I have warm drinks. I reported the problem, but it took 8 days to have it replaced, and it was only switched from another room. The second issue I had was this extra charge for a Monte Christo room. By calling it a Monte Christo room, one would think there is some kind of upgrade, although $80 is pretty cheap for any upgrade for a 2 week stay. I went to the front desk to inquire. I was told it include a bottle of rum in my room, which would be delivered the next day, and 2 hours of internet per day. I ask about the wifi coverage and was told that it works throughout the entire resort, including the beach. I'm thinking, that's okay. I get my password and go to my room. The wifi is non existent in my room. I found the only place it worked was in the buffet and is stronger in the part of the buffet closest to the office. Who needs 2 hours of wifi per day if the only place to use it is in the buffet. I get into my room the next day looking for my bottle of rum, only to find a mickey of rum. I felt insulted and ripped off. So really all I got for paying an extra $80 was an extra a la carte dinner each week. I won't be back there

My family and I travelled here for 2 weeks over the Christmas Holidays. Airport COVID test was quick and efficient and we made it out of the airport very fast. Trip to hotel took less than 2 hours at night. Arrival at hotel was fantastic with music and dances and drinks and cigars.
Check in was fast and easy and they gave us exactly the upgraded room that we paid for (high floor, ocean view with extra bed). When we woke up the next day, we got a chance to walk around the property and along the beach. The hotel is just as beautiful, clean and well kept as in all of the pictures online.
We made daily use of the buffet restaurant, 24-7 snack bar and various a la carte restaurants onsite. Our servers at the bars and restaurants took great care of us (Elianys, Dayan, Gloria, Yipsy, Yamy, Yanaily, Yenisey, Arianna, Ledianys, Omar at the Mojito Bar), and special thanks to the entertainment team Lanys, Nery and Milena). We were well taken care of by the team members onsite.
We ensured that we had lots of US $1's and US $5's to tip throughout our trip and also ensured to carry lots of little gifts to hand out daily (this included clothes, make up, nail polish, toys, pencils, pens, erasers, hats, gardening gloves, toiletries). We tried to find and give gifts to all of the gardeners, pool cleaners, beach cleaners, lifeguards and washroom cleaners, who are sometimes overlooked (as everyone would tip the bartenders and servers only).
We visited the ice cream shop daily and tipped the serving girls every single time. The food was great for Cuba, fresh fish, vegetables, fruits, smoothies, omelettes, lobster a few times, shrimp a few times, lovely mixed drinks and other fast foods which were very tasty.
The tour guides from Holasun and Gaviota Tours were very helpful and kind. We did a half day trip to Remedios on Christmas Eve and toured the church and the village to learn the history. We were surprised at the amount of litter on the ground in this village, as we had never seen that before in other parts of the country.
Some of the things that can be done for improvements include installing big screen tv's in the lobby to show foreign news when necessary, more lights and signs around the property, more tables and chairs in the lobby and at the very least, some coin operated washers and dryers onsite for the guests (some guests are long stay guests so not having access to laundry facilities is quite detrimental).
Most of the front line staff went the extra mile to be kind and courteous to the guests, however, some of the back office administrative staff ignored us repeatedly, even after seeing us a few times daily for 2 weeks! This was most obvious with the manager Julian, who passed us dozens of times, never with a smile or a kind word, or acknowledgement of any kind!
We would highly recommend this resort to other tourists.

I have been to this resort 6 times now. Each time I return the ladies working in Customer Service (Elaine and Rosi) go out of there way to make my stay very pleasant. If you require or lack something in your room, they are very helpful in assisting. If you are a returning guest, they will have already booked your VIP return guest dinner for you. You will find the invitation in your envelope which you receive your room key cards. If it isn't there the invitation will be in your room. On the second day of your stay, a small bottle of rum is also placed in your room (for returning guest). They also book your reservations for the À la cart restaurants during your stay. These 2 young ladies are the best. Looking forward to seeing you once again.
Thanks for going above and beyond the call of duty.

I was very nervous about going to Cuba because when I went over 10 years ago, the food was horrible BUT Playa Cayo Santa Maria was very good, beyond my expectations. The a la cartes were very good. My husband and I very favourite place to eat at lunch was the beach restaurant and the grill at the ocean. The breakfast buffet was very good and no line ups because they have 3 omelette stations. Make sure to bring baby wipes to wash your face as Cuba does not have face cloths. They only provide one beach towel each for the week so some return clients, I noticed, brought some from home. I would also recommend bringing ketchup & mustard packets. I heard prior to going that if you typically have issues with sand fly bites to take B12 for 1 month before and during your stay. I have had them at three different resorts so I did what was recommended and did not get one bite. Not sure if it was just coincidence. Big shout out to Yaidelis Calvo Reyes, the service manager, who went out of her way to make our stay better. Also, Joice at the beer bar, Reuben at the pool bar, Mario at the buffet, Guy at the lobby bar and the beautiful lady at the grill, sorry, can't remember her name. All in all, it was a great experience and hope to return with our 3 adult children. Only recommendation is for the bathrooms by the pool and beer bar to be cleaned more often.

We decided to travel as Cuba opened to to visitors. Everything was fine at the airport in santa clara with covid questions and we went thru customs quickly.
When we arrived at the hotel our temperature was taken and it was a quick check in and and Yilen remembered us when we checked in. We were brought to our rooms. Since the resort was not full many staff had just started back at the hotel and were not in their usually positions. But, it did not take long to see the familiar faces after two long years. All staff were fully vaccinated and wore masks and there were plenty of hand sanitizing dispensing areas.
In the customer service area Marta, booked all of ala cartes and was always helpful with our requests.
At the front lobby, we were greeted by some of the regulars, Antonio, Yosbel, Leo, Arianna, Rachel, Dailyn, Sergio, Serguei, and Yusy. After two years some even remembered what we drank in the lobby.
At the 24 hour snack bar we were served by Mairelys, Avelino, Paulino and Rafael. Service was always fast and with a smile.
Only two ala cartes were open during our stay ( Italian and the Cuban ( which is now in the Panda Roja building) We ate at both several times and were served by Laura and Barbara at the Italian and Katia and Carlos at the Cuban restaurant. ( Please note that all menus are scanned by your phone using the QR code).
The Cuban restaurant was our favourite and the italian had a new menu also.
We ate lunch mostly at the El Pescador and were served by Lena, Yeinnsary and Whahito the chef ( you must try the soup). We also ate at the ranchon playa for lunch and they had grilled fish and meats we were met by Yillian.
At the main buffet the omelette stand Aimy remembered our orders also. There was a good selection and you will not go hungry.
My wife decided to get her hair hi-lited and all the staff Dayana, Lyen and Gretter were helpful in the selection of colour and taking their time to ensure she was happy with the result.
The entertainment team were great (Giraldo, Gato, Duniel Yailen, Lainy and of course Lisdania who seemed to be everywhere on the resort. They had so much energy.
If you have a chance and they are still playing go and see the Cuban ban Septeto Atabey ( they play once a week in the afternoon at the pool with the sit down bar inside and also they play again in the evening). They are fantastic and when they sang Stand By Me in both english and spanish was over the top.
We got a call from customer service when we had to get our PCR test done ( dr. is in building 2). It was well organized and we had our results in two days.
I could go on with many more things but, do not be afraid to travel and enjoy the resort you will not be disappointed.

The staircase was never cleaned once while we were there. There was sad and dirt and even hair on the steps with used cups that were just left there day after day. We found a huge cockroach in the bathtub too. Under our bed was never dusted. The food at the buffet was terrible too with all the flies and even larvae on the food. Many of the servers didn't appear cheerful and weren't helpful unless they were tipped first. The pathway was uneven that led to the beach and in need of repair. They needed to spray for the mosquitoes by the pool area at night. The chairs by the pool were filthy and old. If you ever venture there, make sure that you get a room far from the main pool area as the afternoon shows are very loud and the night time ones go well into the wee hours sometimes. Other than that-the freshly ground coffees were delicious and the bbq spot with the traditional Cuban soup was okay to go eat at in the afternoons. They had decent live bands in the lobby but finding chairs wasn't always easy as there were a lot of tourists there over the holidays. I found that allowing tons of the locals to go there on their holiday night passes took away from the tourists' experience on New Years' Eve. Lovely beach area, but the resort itself certainly does have a lot of areas to improve in. Consider the Royalton instead if you want to visit Santa Maria over this resort.

It is low season now. Entertainment will be unpredictable. Only 1 al la carte open per nite in May.
No booze. Just 1 large water bottle daily. And you have to take the one out from the day before or they will not leave a second.
Air Transat or Sunwing
