Detailed Reviews
The setting of NKM is the definition of serene. After several days of travel from Luang Prabang, my stress just melted away within the hour. Nico (the "N" of NKM) greeted me with a welcome drink and we spent some time just visiting and relaxing. There is a large amount of information such as maps that Nico has personally created covering the most popular spots in Southern Laos available for your use.
Keo (Nico's wife and the "K") was making offerings for Buddhist Lent on my first full day and invited me and the other guests to assist. She is an amazing cook and provided unforgettable flavors in her food.
I cannot recommend enough a stay at NKM to rest your mind, body, and soul. When it was time to move on, I was sad to go, but I know it will be a place I visit again. Even though I had to spend a fair amount of time working, watching the butterflies in the garden and the clouds above the Mekong made it an easy pill to swallow.

If you are looking for a very special place then you have to go to NKM Family Homestay. Nicolas and the family are so welcoming and made us feel home away from home. You can just sit in the wonderful garden and look and at the river, you can have interesting talks and discussions with Nicolas and other guests from all over the world, you can enjoy delicious food, you can visit the monastry nearby and teach english to the monks, you can walk around and explore hidden Pakse and you will definitely receive so many personal recommendations and travel advices from Nicolas. Thank you for letting us be part of your family and life, only for 2 days, but one day we will come back for sure. Hagen & Franziska

Have just stayed with this family who are French/ Laos. NIcolas and his daughter speak English, Laos and French. NIcolas has lived in Paksé, Laos for 16 years and is passionate about Southern Laos. He has written an extensive guide in french of this region and is now translating into English. He has also made many detailed maps of southern Laos with places highlighted and not to miss. He has so much info it made my trip very easy and enjoyable. His homestay is 3kms from Paksé overlooking the Mekong. His wife cooked some fabulous meals for us.
If you want somewhere to stay where you will be well looked after I can't recommend enough!

Nicolas Kiao and Marie's welcome is wonderfully personalized, and we felt like home very quickly. Nicolas is a former English teacher (he is French) and his wife and daughter are Lao. We have learn more in few evenings with them than in one week in the North of Laos. We have even learnt how to read some Lao words.
The Mekong view from the terrace is peaceful, quiet and beautiful. The food is just perfect. the large rooms are cozy with super homemade decorations. The place is out of the busy city but very close to the huge market that Nicolas guided for us for 4 hours (very informative and unheard way to discover Lao culture, economy and society). Situated in a safe Paksé quarter with many local shops, Nicolas has made nice free walks in the village and we also went for a jungle-forest trip nearby (guided too). In the evening the monks mantras and their hospitality was a lovely experience.
Nicolas is also the creator of very useful maps for the area (Bolaven, Champassak and more)... he also wrote very precise guidebooks for free (his online library is incredible : such a work!).
We enjoyed to follow his secret Paksé paths behind the large lanes. We walk more than 10 km in small paths of the town, where no other tourists seem to go. We stayed 6 nights in total, discovering unseen places on the plateau and around Champassak by scooter.
Everything is very well organized with tuk-tuks, accomodation bookings (just a phone call and it is done!) and bus tickets (we went to the four thousand islands and left Laos to Ubon).
NKM is not only the only Mekong small guesthouse in Paksé, but thanks to Nicolas and Kiao ti's a real tourism office (= nkm free lao library online) and one of the best dinners we have had in Laos (only local food).
We will come back for sure! Highly recommended.
Book directly with them is cheaper.

French, English and Lao place.
Southern Laos Adventure Map is also a NKM (Mekong Cozy Homestay) creation, as the huge NKM Free Lao Library (in English & Français).
The pocket-map covers precisely the whole Southern Laos (known & unknown) Attractions.
This is the best tool existing for that area of Laos. It is in fact a map-guide showing many secret places. Moreover the map can be completed by one of the 6 free guidebooks (pdf), more than 20 other free maps online and 10 pdf documents about Lao culture : available in the NKM Free Lao Library/Bibliothèque.
NKM is also the creator of the "Secret Paksé Streets Walk"
It is probably the most useful and beautiful map existing in Laos.
Bolaven Plateau, Champasak Surroundings and 4000 Islands' (main & secret) attractions are showed with a clever colour-code.
Read the legend first to understand the incredible source of information codified in the maps (there are 10 maps & zooms in total in one handy pocket map).
I bought the map at NKM Mekong Homestay (5$), but I saw it also else where in Paksé: Paksé-Hotel, Monument Books Shop, Sésé Bar & B'trail Moto Rental... and maybe other places I do not know.
Highly recommended to inquisitive-minded travellers.
Rent a scooter or a car, enjoy your trip and drive safely.
