A maddening hotel. It's been severely cost-reduced and maintenance-deferred. However it's still good - EUR30 dinner with wine can't be beat, rooms are comfortable if creaky and the location is fantastic. It was once great. Now just good.

I had the privilege of staying in that hotel prior my wedding and after my wedding, they were friendly and so accommodating with me and my family who stayed there, they have an excellent service and the place is really worth it! From the hotel, you can visit so many places and coming back at the end of the day here, makes you smile, you wake up most of the days with a little fog on between the mountains that goes away by the time you want to star the day.

Covadonga is an ancient religious site and the hotel has pride of place in it, occupying a dominant position. Classy marble floors throughout. Staff generally helpful and the restaurant is good value considering the temptation to make the most of its monopoly, it doesn't. Good food/value at reasonable prices. For me the hotel was badly let down by one thing. When a hotel advertises free wifi throughout I expect it to be of at least passable standard. It wasn't. In the room it was unusable. I asked if there was another room on the first floor with better coverage and was told 'sorry.' The only decent access was in the bar so I would say if you want to keep in touch with the outside world you need to spend a lot of time in the bar! Otherwise if you're planning a religious retreat 'away from it all' and out of touch with the rest of the world then is is possibly the place for you.

We booked 3 nights in a Junior Suite and had high expectations; the location was great, however the reat below average. The junior suite needes an upgrade, despite being spacy with a great view of the Covadonga Basilica, bathroom was small and the amenities nit worth 4 stars. There was not enough shampoo/gel for 2 showers
same day. Wallpaper and carpet in the room needed change.
The hotel has laundry service, however does not advertise same. Price is reasonable though. One must prebook breakfast slit evening before due to covid-not convenient at all.
Ensure you get to breakfast early, as you end up spending a lot of time queuing, as they serve hot items by the plate. We tried both early (7:15) and late (10:15). Late breakfast was a disaster; many items were missing and only 2 staff to serve everything (1 staff member was rude and lazy, the other friendly but stresses as he had to do the job for both).
We had dinner (from the bar menu) one evening - don't bother dining at the hotel. Quality and taste (or should I say lack of same) were bad.
The hotel employs young people, however most lack experience which show. Also note not a lot of the staff speak English and basic service and service skills (I know as I have been working in hotels myself)

All in all great location but bad service and outdated amenities and food.

Great hotel at an exceptional location. Because we were three we booked a junior suite which has two rooms with two bathrooms and a living room where an espresso machine was our salvation on the quest of a Cuban coffee. The best of the room were the views from every window, you could see the entire Basilica and the Santina cave from the room. Breakfast buffet was really good with variety and quality. Staff nice and professional. The proximity to the lakes allow you to wake up early and visit them before the entrance closes and the crowd arrives (Summer time). I really recommend Gran Pelayo Hotel.

Caution! Stayed 3 nights. Serious problem with mold, could feel the smell everywhere in the building. Bathroom almost impossible to visit.
I hope that management will take care of this problem very soon.

I booked a stay and had some follow up questions - emailed multiple times and called yet never got answer. I then had to change my plans and was charged a hefty cancellation fee when I sent a cancellation 1 day too late. I understand that I cancelled too late but that would not have happened if I had actually got a response in the first place. Email reply that they never received anything from me although I still had copies of my enquiries

For once I disagree with other reviewers.
The room we had was very very small. Same size as the bathroom in fact. In daytime the place is very busy with Spanish retiree busses. Deserted after 5PM. There are 3 restaurants and that's it. Breakfast was O.K. but we had a cold coffee thermos and an invisible waiter. I think there must have been about three other rooms occupied.
There is NO internet acess at all anywhere.
One inviting aspect of the area is the climb up to the lakes : spectacular. If we ever travel this area again, we'll choose the splendid Parador at Cangas de Oniz which we visited : more expensive and worth it plus : near a bustling city.

Just like the other review - amaizng hotel in a magnificent location. We only spent one night at the hotel as we continued our journey up north. The hotel, room and breakfast were all fantastic. We were given a room that seemed like it was part of an optional larger suite and the room was huge! We opened the window from our bathroom and looked right out on the stunning cathedral. Pretty cool. It is definately a couples hotel!
