Bambu is a small hotel, ideal to enjoy and live with nature with an atmosphere of peace and respect for the environment and its inhabitants. Each cabin has a private bathroom, fan, large and fresh mosquito net, terrace with sea views, cleaning service every day. We have a kitchen for all guests and hotel staff, beach area with hammocks, beds and loungers surrounded by a beautiful vegetation that offers a pleasant freshness and shade. The whole family (including a teenager and a young adult) loved our 5 days’ stay in the cabana Palapa at the Bambu hotel.
You arrive and you are immediately on vacation even if your room / cabana is not yet ready. The view is stunning and even in this high season (Christmas) , San Agustinillo is not crowded at all.

Your host Memo (Guillermo) is there most of the day in case you have a question, request for advice ..etc..

We loved the concept of open kitchen were you can cook or eat takeaway food fom some of the nearby restaurants at any time. Breakfast is not included but we were purchasing fresh juices from across the street and cooking something.
It is also possible to discuss with other guests during the day ane share a meal.

Rooms are spacious and simple. You are inside and outside on the beach at the same time. The first night you’ll be surprised by the loud noise from the heavy waves but your mind is so relaxed that the 2nd night your brain forgets it.

If you are not looking for a luxury hotel with lots of services and lots of bars, restaurats and clubs around but a layback location, this is the place to stay.

Internet connection is decent and a few persons were even working remotely while there alone or with their families.

It is a nice place to learn how to surf or do bodyboard as there are always waves. With young children you need to keep an eye on them though.

Walking on the beach and seeing the sunrise and the sunset everyday was so nice.

Just had our 4th stay at Bambu. This site we stayed in the Bambu room..biggest with a nice big deck that was shaded during the afternoon so DH could paint and sketch. I spent most of my time in a hammock down on beach level.
Bambu is simple, comfortable, like visiting family after our 4th year back. Memo and Miguel stay on top of any issues (our toilet decided to not flush properly and was fixed within hours)
There's a new kitchen layout which is much more convenient if you want to do your own cooking and the big table even has power outlets now so you can charge devices while you sit there.

We did a few breakfasts in, buying fruit from the fruit truck that comes around, yogurt form a small local tend and granola which we brought from Patzcuaro ( best granola ever!)

What we love about Bambu

Being right on the beach
Comfortable beds
Quiet (well except for the ocean lol)
Lots of hammocks and lounges for sitting at beach level.
Good decks on the upstairs units
Watching birds and beginner surfers ....never gets boring
Memo, Miguel and the girls who keep things nicely cleaned
Easy walk to several places for breakfast and/or dinner
Good mosquito nets although there were almost no bugs this year. (saw 1 mozzie the entire time)
Sleeping with the wooden screens open at night on the upstairs levels.

Bambu isn't a "polished" resort but the space has a wonderful feel and you'll meet a variety of people of all ages from all over the world.

Already planning on our 2021 visit.

Only downside for some...no hot water :) I only mention this so you have no surprises if you book :)

This is a unique lodging with incredibly creative architecture located right on the beach. Our room had a large balcony amidst birds, trees, and the sound of the surf, with a close up view of the beach and ocean. Comfortable and shaded lounge seating is on the beach. There is a full kitchen available for making your own meals. The hosts are very friendly, helpful, informational, and talkative--and they speak English if you need/want that. All in all, a great experience. It's also on the only street and close to all restaurants, etc. Fantastic broad beach. We want to go back!

San Agustinillo has a great sandy beach, and Bambu Ecocabanas is very well situated on the beach (like many other properties), The facilities are very basic; no hot water, intermittent WiFi, no bar or food service unless you do it yourself. That can be fine as simple can be good, but the problem is that you are being charged as much, if not more, than other properties on the beach that provide much better accommodation and service.
Building work is taking place at the property, so it currently looks like a building site and there was constant drilling and hammering from the seven building workers. There was no apology from management for this noise, and no discount offered.

Holidays are sacred. One invests energy, money and time with the intention of having an unforgettable moment, recharging the battery and forgetting the routine and stress of the day to day. The people who offer these services (hoteliers, restaurant ros, tourist guides, etc.) must be aware of this and seek above all the satisfaction of their customers. And not only this, but above all, they seek to exceed expectations and achieve unforgettable moments for their clients. Bamboo Ecocabañas are the "antithesis" of this service philosophy. From the moment you arrive, the place is nothing what you imagine (dark, dirty, nothing ecological). The attention is deplorable and worse knowing that it is not an unmotivated employee but the owner of the place (Memo), who only offers communication by email, very kind by mail, but in person a "PATÁN" in all the extension of the word. "Park your vehicle, lower your bags, take off your clothes in the bathroom and put them in a bag, which I will return to you until you leave," were his words of welcome. And not only to me, but to my wife and 4-year-old son. Immediately my response was "this is not what we are looking for" to which he very politely replied "well you go and f%&$ you". Yes, with everything and family, after 12 hours of driving from Cholula to San Agustinillo. Fortunately, we had to reject this treatment and we found a very special place where we spent an unforgettable holidays. In the end, this bad experience became a story to tell and was quickly forgotten in this magical place. The reason for this review is to expose our annoyance and prevent other people from having unnecessary experiences. San Agustinillo is a magical place and there are many other highly recommended lodging options for different budgets. We decided to try a different option with Bamboo Ecocabañas, and it was totally different from what we expected. Fortunately, it only lasted a few minutes and the reservation was without a deposit or guarantee, otherwise the story would not have ended there.

We arrived on Friday and a week later we were still here.. The kitchen was great as we made afternoon guacamole almost daily which was nice. If you wanted to eat in the kitchen was always open. Yes, there was no hot water but it’s an Eco hotel and we got used to it . Miguel was always helpful and polite. The rooms were tidied daily, my only complaint is that I had to actually strip my bed for the sheets to get changed. If your looking for a place to come and go and eat in or out, then you don’t have to look any further you have the freedom to have it all here.
PS the daily yoga next door was a nice way to wake up early and start your day.

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights during our honeymoon and had the best time there ! The rooms are amazing, built with attention and quality, the sea view is breathtaking and we slept with the sound of waves. Guillermo was a super host, welcoming us warmly. The location is perfect, we highly recommend !

We were lucky enough to be able to stay here over the busy Christmas holiday and loved it!

It’s a long & amazing drive from Oaxaca city but we had the warmest & friendliest welcome by Memo who runs the beach houses.

The cabana's are set facing the beach and the ocean; a gorgeous setting. Rooms are clean and spacious and each has a personal outside balcony or terrace to relax and just take it all in. Bambu has been thoughtfully designed and there are so many little touches that make it unique.

Bambu does not offer a bar or breakfast service but there is a spacious shared kitchen with space in the fridges & lockers if you want. However, San Agustinillo has lots of small cafes & restaurants for those not interested in cooking!

Outside areas are kept swept & clean and everyone worked to make this s wonderful stay.

I have to make a special mention of Memo. His personal attention to his guests make this an outstanding place to stay. One of our party was unfortunately unwell and he looked after us so well. We are incredibly thankful to him for his help.

San Agustinillo is a lovely beach area. The swimming was fabulous and there are plenty of chances to surf and snorkel. We also took a boat ride and we’re thrilled to catch whales, dolphins, manta rays, .. quite a sea safari!

Thank you Bambu.

We stayed in one of the ground floor rooms, on the left hand side, closest to the beach. It had superb views across the beach to the sea and a lovely deck area to sit outside. Unfortunately, we were plagued by mosquitoes which didn’t seem to be a problem for any of the other guests. It was also fine if we sat in any of the other areas, so we guess they were breeding under the decking. However, this is such a lovely place to stay, don’t be put off, just try to get a room further back or upstairs. The kitchen area is well equipped and great for preparing your own food. Everywhere was kept clean and tidy. The mosquito net round the bed and the fan were essential! There is no hot water, but a cool shower was all that was needed! The sea directly opposite is not safe for wimpy swimmers like me, but a short walk along the beach takes you to safe areas to bob about in the water.

It’s a very very beautiful place, we had a cabana right on the beach, the sounds of waves sneak into our dreams. The place is super clean und the rooms are very beautiful and specially designed. Memo who owns the place is most gentle lovely generous and helpful person. A dream. I really want to come back!

How much is this hotel? I can’t see price anywhere!
Answer from Gene B

It is not a hostel; I'm not sure I have more to add than my original review. I don't know what your concerns are re: "hostel versus hotel." The rooms are private, with private baths. It is not fancy. The clientele is diverse; some young folks who cooked in the communal kitchen. You can't really buy groceries in this town. We ate all meals out - there are maybe 6 or 7 restaurants; we are content with fish and ceviche every night on a mexican beach vacation. You don't need a recommendation - it is a tiny town and you can get the lay of the land quickly. We had ceviche on the beach every day for 3 days at a place I can't remember that Bambu's owner recommended, and there are adequate breakfast places. We don't bother with pizza in mexico but it is there. In terms of accomodations I would reiterate that there is no hot water - that was my main problem. I don't care about a pool but I like a hot shower. But I survived. We never left San Augustinillo but you could easily take a taxi to Zipolite.
