Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
This boutique hotel is a real retreat. The room was spotless, with tasteful decor and sustainable details.
Breakfast was delicious, with fresh and local ingredients.
The atmosphere is quiet, in total harmony with nature, ideal for relaxing and disconnecting. Attention to detail and commitment to sustainability make the experience unique. Highly recommended!

I almost don’t want to leave a review because this place feels like a hidden gem worth keeping secret. Staying here truly feels like being a guest in a friend’s home.
From the moment we arrived, the charming owner greeted us at the curb, warmly welcomed us, and gave us a wonderful introduction to the area, instantly making us feel at ease. The rooms, perched high on the hill with breathtaking ocean views, feel like a private sanctuary. Falling asleep with the windows open to the soothing sounds of the jungle and distant waves is pure magic.
Each morning began with a simple yet delicious breakfast, setting the perfect tone for a day of exploring the town.
It’s not a luxury hotel in the traditional sense, but the tranquil simplicity, location, and staff makes it an enriching experience of its own.
Stay here before Saint Augustinillo becomes the next Tulum ;)

Very comfortable rooms that are beautifully designed, offering a modern feel while being respectful and reflective of the local traditions. Large folding doors with shutters open onto a deck, providing an amazing jungle / ocean view (I was in an upper suite) and a refreshing breeze. (Bonus: they make their own line of bath products, which I thoroughly enjoyed.)
Alan, the owner/host, was very attentive and helpful. He provided excellent restaurant recommendations and promptly answered all my questions. He didn’t hesitate to assist with purchases I needed to make and even helped source local crafts I had requested.
It’s important to note that the entire area is built on a hill. Unless you’re staying beachfront, your accommodations will likely have some. I come from a city that’s basically flat, so I took my time and adjusted within a few days.
If you’re seeking a quieter atmosphere with access to excellent restaurants, food (pop-up farmer truck/stand - brilliant!), and beautiful beach, San Agustinillo is the perfect choice. It’s an excellent alternative to Mazunte—which is fun, but bigger and busier—yet still within walking distance if you choose to explore.

How I enjoyed the days I spent in Monte Uzulu, the only thing missing was more time there! From the design of the rooms and the hotel, the views, the focus on sustainability, breakfasts, and the environment in general, it was the perfect place to relax and appreciate the nature of the Oaxacan coast. Only 5 minutes walk to the most beautiful beach, the location is perfect. Plus Alan is the friendliest, most generous and attentive host - he made me the unforgettable experience from welcoming mezcal to suggestions from the area. Thanks friend for everything and see you very soon!

Everything was perfect, we didn’t want to leave! We had the most amazing four night stay at Monte Uzulu. Alan and Riccardo made us feel so welcome and at home from the moment we arrived.
San Augustinilo is a beautiful little town, and Monte Uzulu is tucked just away from the main street - close enough that you can pop down to the beach or lovely nearby restaurants within just a few minutes, but quiet and secluded enough that you can truly relax.
We loved the morning breakfasts, relaxing on the balcony, and just generally all of the beautiful touches in the room. Highly highly highly recommend!

My husband and I had a fantastic time at Monte Uzulu! I chose to come after seeing an article about how it was built with natural and healthy materials, and the design certainly did not disappoint! We slept so well with the sound of the crashing waves and the fresh air streaming in. It felt like a privilege to wake up in such a beautiful room with a spectacular view.
The staff were so helpful to us as our Spanish is limited, and organized local activities and taxis for us. The restaurant was delicious! I'm surprised to see other reviews speaking negatively about the breakfast, as that was really a highlight for us both! It comes with a bowl of fruit and a hearty cookie (and unlimited spiced coffee I'm now trying and failing to replicate at home).
Although this wasn't a major issue for us, I think it is worth mentioning that the bathroom had no doors and that they ask you to not throw toilet paper in the toilet as it clogs their composting toilet.

Wow! My partner stayed at Monte Uzulu for 3 days and had the most restorative and enjoyable stay. The hosts Alan and Gabbi were so kind to us, helping book excursions, making dinner reservations, and even served us a delicious breakfast every morning. If you get the chance, reserve the top floor of the hotel as our views were incredible 😍

Charming hotel on the hill of San angustinillo. Really liked the decoration and the natural concept. The body products provided are wonderful. Despite a lot of positive things, we were dissapointed with the breakfast which was included in our reservation. It contains only a couple of fruits and a biscuits which is really not a breakfast. The hotel should create instead a plate with some fruits, the biscuits and one egg which does not cost so much to provide especially for the price paid. Otherwise, friendly staff and very clean place. Recommend it if you change the breakfast issue.

Monte Uzulu is an incredibly unique, charming, and amazing place!
First, it’s located in San Agustinillo, one of the most beautiful beaches of the Oaxacan coast, characterized by its genuine character, yummy rests and beautiful sunsets. We have visited San Agustinillo for years, but always ended up staying Mazunte as we didn’t find a hotel or Airbnb offering that we liked. But this was before Monte Uzulu...
Monte Uzulu is built on a cliff not too far from the beach, which makes it even better than being ocean front given you get to see such beautiful views of both the jungle and the ocean. I love how it was thought to be part of its jungle surroundings, how everything integrates so well with the nature around, and how thoughtful all the construction materials and details were done.
Its design is so unique, absolutely true to Oaxaca yet adding contemporary touches. The rooms are super comfy, with amazing mattresses, linens, and other amenities. Another special part of the experience is the lightning! Nothing worse than staying at a nice place but with bad lightning! This is not the case in Monte Uzulu. You never miss light harmony throughout day and night, and it really makes it disguise with its surroundings.
Each room has a lovely terrace that gets the most amazing light during the day, and perfect sunrise and sunset rays! Also, the bathroom is so lovely. Most of the rooms have tubs, and since they are in the back of the room you get to shower while overlooking the jungle. It is like showering in the rain. Just lovely.
They now have a restaurant on site, Temporada, which serves all meals all day. Delicious food, perfect offering, and the nicest staff! It's really amazing to have a place like Monte Uzulu to go to, where there is no fuzz, no extra luxuries that one doesn't really need. Instead, you get amazing and unique design, with all the comforts one could ask for, while being in your own little jungle overlooking the ocean. I really could go on and on...

The most idyllic place to stay. Gorgeous views, eco-conscious amenities that still feel so luxurious, amazing breakfast, and the MOST helpful concierge/hosts you could ask for. A must if visiting the Mazunte/San Agustinillo/Zipolite area.
