Nicely restored century old villa retains its historic feel - with added luxury bathrooms. The house is full of quirky but quality art work. Atmosphere is relaxed, friendly and very personal - nothing is too much trouble. Owner is a fund of information and advice about local options.

Stayed here for the first time recently, it was my kinda place a mix between a hotel and a (albeit a flash one) hotel. My room came with a fire place and as like, my own bathroom but some other rooms have shared facilities. There's a common lounge area and should you really want it a TV room. The owner...

Drove into Tanaka from Picton and checked into the Shady Rest for two days. The Shady Rest is a quaint inn filled with intriguing art, spacious rooms, and a lovely dining room. The owner/host/chef, Mark, provided us a wonderful introduction to the area including recommendations for sites to see and how to get there. Breakfast was made to order and...

We recently had 3 great nights at Shady Rest and were delighted with the whole experience. Mark is a great host and his support staff are also excellent. The restoration work Mark has undertaken on this historic building is great and it is furnished beautifully. Mark's breakfasts are a work of art and simply the best we had on this...

It was a pretty long drive from Barrytown to Takaka and the last hill was a bit tiring, but the warm welcome (thank you Mark) and the lovely room in the renovated house made us feel fantastic. A very comfortable stay, in walking distance of all the restaurants and a fantastic breakfast. All thanks to Mark who hosted us for...

Shady Rest is a beautiful old building lovingly restored over several years by Mark the owner. Spacious rooms with comfortable beds and all the facilities you need in a good B&B. Comfortable lounge with an excellent choice of DVD's if the weather turns nasty (Nuts in May is essential viewing). What makes this place extra special is the friendliness and...

We booked last minute to stay in Takaka and were fortunate to get a room at Shady Rest. The whole experience was fantastic. As soon as we walked through the front door Feli (one of the staff members) made us feel very welcome. The house was in amazing condition, which we learnt the owner, Mark had refurbished over a 5...

Stayed here for a long weekend and could not fault it. The building itself is stunning, and brimming with beautiful prints and furniture, and the beds were amazing! Mark the owner did a wonderful job of welcoming us and talking us through all there is to do in Takaka, but we missed a fair bit of it because we didn't...

My wife and I stayed in the Spa room in January 2017. Room was great. Jetted tub was awesome. There are only a few rooms here and it is within walking distance to everything in town. Breakfast was very good. The grounds are very nice. There is also a massive grapevine in the back patio/courtyard area. Really cool place, and...
