Superbly friendly & helpful hosts. Enjoyed a very nice breakfast in a lovely setting with great views and interesting conversation. Bed comfortable too. Highly recommended and an ideal spot to start the Camino Francais from.

St Jean Pied de Port is a very small town. Very easy to walk throughout the town. Due to bridges, small lanes, etc, I'm not even sure it's possible to hire a taxi. Maison Garicoitz is not in the main town, but only requires a 10 minute hike or so. Before our trip, I printed out the map on trip advisor to find out how to get there from town. The town itself has a few very steep hills right in the middle of the town. Then leaving town, there are a few other steep hills to walk up before arriving at Maison Garicoitz. After we arrived and checked into the pilgrim's office, we hiked to Maison Garicoitz, checked in, then dropped off our gear. We later returned to town for dinner and to pick up a few items for the next day's camino walk. By the way, we paid 50% of our bill when we made reservations for Maison Garicoitz. The owner asked us to pay cash for the balance when we checked in (that was okay, but a surprise). My wife and I wanted to get an early start for our camino, leaving at 7 am. The owner said he did not get up that early, but he was very nice and left us a breakfast tray at our door before he went to bed. This included a thermos of hot coffee, orange juice, a few pieces of fruit, and a few rolls / croissants. So I'm guessing normal checkout is anytime from 8 am to 10 or 11 am. Hope this helps and buen camino if this is your plan !
