This review is for “Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel”. Cons- The staff did not work with us at all to help us EXTEND our stay by one night, effectively turning away business for the hotel. We decided we wanted to ski one extra day but my partner had to do something for work until noon the morning of check out (check out is 11am), we called and asked if we extended our stay by one night if we would be able to check out late. We were given a response of “we have a strict no late check our policy due to Covid regulations”. Basically, the hotel turned away another night of business (cost of the room, food because we would be eating there again because there is nowhere to go outside of sugarloaf, 2 lift tickets for the mountain) over staying one hour later in the room for a work obligation (which we explained was the reason). A possible $500-600 earnings over one hour! It’s almost comical. My partner said on the phone “okay we cannot extend”, the front desk staff member was fine with that, and that was the extent of the conversation. Something tells me this person clearly did not think about the amount of money he/she just left on the table for the hotel and mountain itself over an hour. If a guest asks a small favor, but is clearly rewarding the hotel with extra money you think you would do it. The parking- you have to park as a guest in a lot that is down a hill, and the lot itself is covered in very thick ice. Luckily we had my SUV so we were able to park okay, but low clearance cars would have an extremely difficult time. Also, the ice in the lot is just dangerous. They should do a much better job plowing, and breaking up that thick ice and salting. It’s not very fair to a guest to wonder if they’re going to slip exiting their car after they just parked on extremely uneven terrain because the parking lot isn’t well taken care of. This is a mountain resort- meet the elements for your guests. The hotel needs updating badly, the rooms have old carpeting and curtains (ours were ripped) and fixtures need to be updated. We were constantly woken up early (on the days we did not ski) from doors slamming throughout the hotel. Either everyone slams doors here or the walls are paper thin. Not exaggerating, we must have been woken up 10-20 times due to slamming doors. Everything in the village closed very early, like I mean at 4pm to the minute or earlier. We tried to order take-out from the Bag around 6pm (dinner time) they were closed even though it says they close at “8ish” on their website. There was literally nothing open but the hotel’s own “45 North” which is overly priced for what they offer ($22 burger). Pros- the skiing is great, the conditions were good, the staff at sugarloaf (the mountain itself) were very helpful and welcoming. The lodge had an excellent drink selection (when they were open lol). The mountain offers something for everyone from beginner to expert. We would come back to ski but would skip the hotel next time.…
I have skied Sugarloaf a few times, most recently 3/1/21, right after a little fresh but heavy snow. Sugarloaf does a lot of grooming and appeals more to an intermediate skier than a beginner. It got very windy (60-70 MPH gusts) with frigid temps, making the snow super hard. Great for racing skis but very hard to be in control with regular recreational skis. Because it is such a big hill, with Covid19 you often have the trail to yourself. Skiing midweek is great, but their mid-mountain lodge was notopen on Monday. Lift tickets cost what they cost. Considering the real estate and operating expenses, I think lift tickets are worth paying whatever the resport is charging.
Made the 3 hr trek with some friends, and I had a great time. Front desk staff were great and the rooms were spacious as well. Definitely recommend D’ellies, 45 North and the widowmaker if you’re looking for a bite to eat. The buffalo wings and widowmaker burger are 👌🏻. Big shoutout to Ed in the pro shop for being such a personable and down to earth guy, and making sure that my boots fit me properly. Can’t wait to come back again!
The staff is excellent! Everything you need always ask the front desk for anything you need. If they have it they will get it for you. Hot tub is the best outside with great lights at night. Rooms very clean and comfortable. Hotel is very COVID -19 safe !!! Ski in and out is the best. Would stay again !!!
We stayed here while on a golf outing to Sugarloaf Golf Course. The hotel is very nice, rooms were cleaned & sealed per COVID standards. We only interacted with one staff member during the entire stay & he wore a mask & was very personable. The bed had spotless linens, was comfortable & the bathroom was well stocked. Cleaning crew does not come in during a brief stay but there were plenty of white, fluffy towels. The area is pretty isolated with most restaurants closed and no evening activities- bars, entertainment- in the off season but that’s precisely why we chose this place. No COVID worries. It would be awesome to stay here during ski season as it is right at the base of the lifts. Great stay.
