Amazing stay at Destination Ailleurs, the owners are so hospitable and welcoming! The yurts are one of a kind and made for a relaxing stay. The breakfast provided in the morning was great and delivered on the terrace with amazing views. The yurt dinner service is also excellent with wine, main course and dessert delivered straight to the yurts! I would recommend for anyone who wants a relaxing and unique experience close to Castellane:)

In the middle of nowhere up a dirt track after a very wiggly road, you arrive at yurts looking like circular white plastic encased tents on two terraced levels. From the main road keep your eyes open for signs for the place, small but noticeable, and in the sat nav consider programming the co ordinates from the Internet site. Needing a torch at night to get from the car parking bit down a stoney slope one finds a wooden shack next to the yurt. This is the shower/toilet block just for your yurt. There are no towels issued, bring your own unless you can ask in French if they have any. In the wooden shack is an earth toilet where your poo is kept in a black bag. Dinner must be booked ahead otherwise it is a 15 minute or so drive to the closest restaurant. So far this sounds grim. But actually it is wonderful.......actually really spiffing......easy to find as long as your sat nav is programmed, or map reading skills are effective. The yurts caused Mrs T a second of worry on approach. She has higher standards than me. Then the little wooden painted door was opened on the yurt. Amazing, a hotel quality circular room. With an electric powered oil radiator to keep it warm, this was on for 20 minutes and then turned off as it was too cozy. A proper comfy double bed, lamps, little table, pictures on the 'walls' and pillows on the floor to sit upon. Plug holes for people who need phones. There is internet in a yurt, a bit on and off but who needs it really? Through the open door is a forest to see with mountains behind. As for the toilet block. Well it is a shed of wonder. A really good shower, drinkable water from the ultra clean sink taps. The toilet, well, initially I had visions of a hole in the ground. No it's a seated arrangement without the usual splash as there is no water used. This sounds horrid but the manually applied shovel of sweet smelling wood shavings sprinkled inside the toilet makes the place aromatic, not of poo, but of wood. It is great! There is no scary torch bobbing journey to the loo at night either. The block is within 20ft of the yurt and there is an outside light to show the way. The place is serene and we both thought it is a place to return to. The cards in French with Buddhist quotes available in the yurt just show what you get in terms of the concept. From the wiggly eyebrows of 'If this is rough and ready you are taking me to a hotel' from Mrs T, it has become, ' You are bringing me back in a car so we do not have hand luggage restrictions to carry the jam on sale here and get me in a yurt again'. And I will. Oh as for restaurants, just take the journey back towards Castellane. Just as you get to the valley floor and before the town, try Restaurant L'Escape. Big signs cannot miss it, it is red in colour. I will submit a review on that too. If you see a grey MX 5 in the car parking place at Destination...... say hello, it is me coming back without a plane in the journey plan. The owner is a top chap, limited English but conversing in hand signals is part of the adventure.

Fabulous time and great hosts - best to find it in the daylight though as roads are winding and dark at night. Wonderful place with wonderful views. Beautiful breakfast and nothing was too much trouble.
