My girlfriend and I came to Sumatra to see orangutans and wanted to stay in somewhere a little higher end after a long journey to Indonesia from central Europe. We absolutely loved this place and the people.

The rooms were charming, cosy and very clean. When we arrived we were welcomed by the staff with a drink and after about ten minutes, would you believe it, an orangutan and her baby passed by on the river shore right in front of the garden terrace! Ok, we can't credit the hotel for that, but it was a sign of what was yet to come during our stay here. We absolutely loved Anton, but all staff were fantastic at the hotel.and also during the jungle treks. Please be sure to book with Sumatra Ecotours as they practice ethical guiding and every time they saw plastic or other rubbish, they picked it up. They truly care about the environment and the wildlife there which is why we ultimately chose this place. I've already recommended this place to friends and will continue to do so.

We had a wonderful organised trip with Eco Travel and choose the full service option including pick up service from Medan and at the end airport service from Lake Toba to Medan Airport.
Sure for a young backpacker at first sight the package price seems high, but we didn’t regret our decision one minute.
The guides where all well trained, spoke great English, were very interested to talk to you and loved their job. We got so much interesting information and always felt welcome.
The EcoLodge was spacious and clean, breakfast delicious and staff amazingly friendly. We can highly recommend to stay here!

We booked this stay originally in 2019 and due to covid had to rebook two times before we were able to travel in April of this year. EcoTravel were so helpful with all the changes and this gave us a lot of assurance that our experience was going to be a positive one when we arrived. We booked the 2 day jungle trek which also included 2 nights in the lodge in Bukit Lawang. Everything from our pick up at our hotel in Medan to the time we were dropped to the airport was excellent. The lodge and rooms are exactly as they are in the pictures, if not even nicer. The breakfast at the lodge and food when trekking was extremely fresh, tasty and plentiful. A special mention to our trekking team who looked after us for the 2 days in the jungle. We felt very safe in the hands of our head guide Anton and his team. Anton was very knowledgable about the jungle and filled us with interesting facts throughout the two days. He also created a fun atmosphere within our group which created a bond between the group for the 2 days. Also I'd like to thank Honda and his other colleague (apologies I can't remember all names), who helped me greatly with the descent down to our camp by the river. I was a bit slower than the rest of the group and they stayed with me to guide me down safely. The team worked hard to ensure we saw orangutans and because of this we were rewarded 3 separate times, seeing a total of 8 orangutans over the course of the first day trekking. We also saw other wildlife such as gibbons, thomas leaf monkeys, turtles, monitor lizards, minature frogs and peacocks. The highlight (other than the orangutans of course), was the tube taxi down the river the next day. Again, all done very safely with life jackets included, something I noticed that many other companies didn't have. A couple of things to note if booking. Firstly the lodge doesn't serve lunch or dinner, however there are many restaurants within a few minutes walk that are very reasonable and have very good food. Secondly due to the heat/humidity and the uneven, muddy and challenging terrain the further into the jungle you go, the jungle treks that involve at least one overnight in the jungle, I would class them as moderate to strenuous. A great experience and very achievable if you have good fitness and are used to uneven surfaces, however if not, stick to the 1 day trek. You will still have a good chance of seeing orangutans. We saw them about 20 minutes into day one on our trek, once we left the buffer zone. And the final thing is definitely bring mosquito spray and bite cream - its the jungle after all! If you are going to Sumatra a trip to Bukit Lawang is a must and EcoTravel Cottages will not disappoint. The cost of their tours is so reasonable for what you get and you only pay a deposit upon booking. The balance is paid when you arrive.

The EcoTravel Cottages are absolutely beautiful. Our room was upgraded free of charge which was so lovely of the EcoTravel team! We had a balcony with a hammock, table and chair to sit outside and watch the beautiful river and rainforest. The bed had mosquito nets so there was no problems with bugs. There isn't aircon but the fans kept us perfectly cool.

There was a minibar with reasonably priced drinks and the breakfasts in the morning were so lovely!

You can swim in the river and it's great to watch the monkeys come to the riverbank in the mornings.

There isn't a restaurant, but plenty in the village within a couple of minute's walk.

Absolutely lovely stay, would recommend to anyone. Thank you!!

Myself and my girlfriend did the two day jungle trek to see the orangutans and it was amazing! Although there is no guarantee you will see orangutans, our guides went out of their way to ensure we had the best experience possible. We saw 7 orangutans along with so much other wildlife.
Our guide Andra and his friend Yippee were great. They were full of information and we're happy to help with everything!
I would highly recommend this tour to anyone!

The stay at EcoTravel cottages was an amazing experience. From the start of our communications with the cottages until the final goodbyes the staff went above and beyond to make our trip enjoyable and comfortable.

The room was spacious, neat and clean with all the amenities. The bed was comfortable and came with amazing views of the river.

Breakfast was more a generous serving of fresh fruits and catered to everyone's wants and needs. They even stay with you at breakfast to ensure the monkey's don't partake at the breakfast or harass you while enjoying your meal.

They staff provided their own tours of the local jungle which was such an amazing experience. They were knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna and ensured we were well looked after for the duration of the 7 hour hike. We saw 7 orangutangs on our journey and many other species of wildlife. They ensure that the hike is done ethically and that their is no disturbance to the local wildlife while on the journey,

I would recommend if you can to take their advice on board about wearing long pants and take insect repellent. We done the hike in sneakers which is doable but can become very slippery at times so if possible i would recommend shoes with grip or shoes suited to hiking.

We can't express our gratitude to the staff who truly made our trip an amazing and memorable experience.

We loved our time in Bukit Lawang, the team at EcoTravel are amazing and made the whole experience really special. I can't rate them highly enough ! The accomodation is very comfortable in a picturesque location and the staff at the lodge are incredibly friendly & helpful.
We did the 2d/1n jungle trek & really appreciated the guides attention to our well being & their enthusiasm & passion for their jungle and wildlife. We were very lucky to see orangutan, Thomas Leaf monkeys & gibbons. The trek was a challenge but highly rewarding. The river side campsite, enjoying a yummy meal in our candlelit dining hut, swimming in the waterfall and rafting back to base were highlights. We also did the Local Life bike tour & Bat Cave tour, and highly recommend both. We definitely hope to be back to this exceptional part of the world !

EcoTravel is a very reputable accommodation and tour service. We had the journey of a lifetime and it well-exceeded our expectations. The rooms were very spacious, clean and comfortable. They had very helpful and friendly staff.

We chose the Orangutans & Elephants Bukit Lawang Trekking & The Tangkahan Elephants (5-Day Tour). The trek itself was no easy feat. While it was only 10 km, it was quite technical with very steep incline & declines. It was rainy season so there was a lot of slippery mud, exposed tree roots and vegetation. It look a lot of strategy and calculation on where to take the next step. Thank goodness we wore hiking boots, we saw many people in just tennis shoes which were really not suitable for the conditions. The jungle is hot year round so pack lightly, bring lots of water and bug spray. Be aware there are dangerous snakes in Sumatra. This is a risk you take being in the jungle. Our guides spoke fluent english, were very accommodating, extremely knowledgable, concerned with safety and patient. They are the best in Bukit Lawang, each one very tenured.

We saw a plethora of wildlife, 3 mama Orangutan each with babies. Thomas Leaf, Macaque, Gibon monkeys, peacock, hornbill, eagle, turtle, river otter, monitor lizards and more. Unlike other trekking outfits we had a guide and a lookout that went head to spot the Organutan. Our guides were very respectful of the animals and didn't want to disrupt their natural daily routine. When too many people were near, we respectfully provided space. EcoTravel also makes donations to conservation efforts and the local villages.

The Sumatran Elephant visit was an incredible experience and worth every moment of the 2 hour bumpy journey to and from Tangkahan. They are amazing creatures and the interaction is absolutely heartfelt.

We highly recommend this adventure.

I am convinced this is the best accommodation in Bukit Lawang. Stayed at the Jungle Suite and found the room to be very spacious and clean. The bathroom is also very clean and has hot water. The hotel has a lovely common area too overlooking the river with lounging chairs - perfect for reading or people/wildlife watching. The staff is the star of the show. Everyone is super friendly, attentive, and thoughtful. They brought us popcorn when we were chilling by the river, offered to bring drinks to our room, and always made sure we have everything we needed. Stay here.

A great spot to stay in Bukit Lawang! We only stayed one night as we head to head out early after our trek, but wish we could have stayed another. The setting is gorgeous, and the rooms are quite nice. It is right on the river with its own small dock area, lounge chairs, and hammocks. You can eat breakfast at the lodge, but will need to go to any nearby restaurant for lunch or dinner. Overall a comfortable and beautiful place to stay for your exploration of Bukit Lawang and the jungle!

The transfer from Medan Airport to Bukit Lawang can take up to 5 hours depending on the time of your flight. The traffic is heavy and the roads can be narrow and rough through villages. We had our pick up costs included in our package with Eco Travel. It was well worth the trip! l

Hey PynL, They have mosquito nets to cover the beds, so it's impossible for them to get into the sheets. Also, I can't remember seeing any lizards inside the rooms, the whole area is very clean and the tours are awesome!
