Detailed Reviews
New Owners, Teresa and James, are very excited about their new business. They seem very comfortable there and have good knowledge of surrounding lakes and portages. They were very welcoming, service was the very best and the cabins were very clean and well maintained. Fishing was fantastic!! Their son, Carson, guided us and I was impressed with his fishing knowledge. I will be back next year!

Ten years ago I traveled there with my father, brother, and brother-in-law. I hadn't fished in many years and wasn't really looking forward to the trip. I guess you could say I'd lost touch with the more important things in life and thought spending a 30 hours driving and week on a boat out of touch with the world was going to be too costly to my speedy lifestyle. Little did I know that in less than a week, my perspective would be turned upside down.
We drove up from Chicago, everyone in the van and me on my laptop keeping touch with work on the road. The drive ended up being good that we were all talking and sharing stories from years ago. We finally arrived at Redlake and spent the night in a rustic and comfortable hotel and flew out to the island that next morning. That flight set the tone for the trip. It was a little scary, very noisy, but really exciting. The view was remarkable flying over all the water and gorgeous landscape. You just knew you were going a vacation that was already becoming an adventure.
When we arrived, the hospitality of everyone was fantastic. You felt like you were with family and friends from the minute you landed. Everyone pitched in to get all the luggage off the plane and helped getting the group that was there back on board. We reached our cabin which was very nice, and started touring the island. Within an hour, we started unpacking our gear and getting ready to go fishing. We walked back to the dock, were given maps and some ideas on hot-spots to hit, got into the boats and headed out.
Now, this is where it all turned for me. Out on the lake, no pager, no computer, just me and my dad on the boat, surrounded by breathtaking views, no other humans in sight, out fishing and having the time of my life. I could not believe the experience I was having. I had absolutely nothing to worry about. Boats were always gassed up, meals were taken care of (and delicious), beds were made, towels were washed, fish were cleaned, just whatever was needed was taken care of by the exceptional staff on the island. Their concern was that we would have no concerns. We could focus all our time on relaxing, planning portages, talking about the day, laughing, eating, fishing, and not having a care in the world.
Sense then, we've been back four more times and expanded the group to include more family and friends. Everyone's always had a great time.
I can't say enough about the place. I can't guarantee the transition from go-go-go, busy-busy-busy will be the same for you as it was for me, but I can guarantee this is one trip that will certainly give you time to pause, reflect, and consider what's really important in life. Regardless of your mindset, you’ll have a wonderful time through the very special attention the Viking Island staff bring to every visitor. We've been back five times sense and each trip has been just as good as the first as they've continued to upgrade facilities each year.
Happy fishing, and even happier memories!

Donna and Dean stole our 2000$ deposit and never refunded or rebooked. Scanned our calls and emails. Told us to stop trying to contact them. This happened during Covid and they told us that it is our problem we cannot get up to Red lake from the States. 2020/2021 October

Viking Island is under new ownership and has refurbished and repaired the docks etc. Tito the new owner is working hard in continuing to upgrade a variety of amenities. They are extremely cordial to guests (as were the Carlsons). I have gone to Viking Island annually since 2004 and hope to continue for many years in the future! Rocky Crisman, Philomath, OR

Just another awesome trip to Viking Island. The fishing on Douglas Lake seems to just be getting better as the years go by. Vito and Dayle have ushered in a new era to VI, and we give it four thumbs up! The cabin was great with everything clean and in proper working order. Mel and Liz took great care us. It is not a question of would I go back, it is a question of how long is it until next June. Just been home for a couple of weeks and am already anxious for a return trip. FISH ON

We just spent 2 weks at Critchell Lake (The last 2 weeks of August) thru Viking Outposts! We have been coming here since the early 1980's. We are not going anywhere else! To be a fisherman - A Canadian Fly In to an Outpost Cabin is beyond words. The Carlsons have been doing this since 1948. They know what they are doing!! Just getting on one of their Beaver float planes is worth the trip alone. The Outpost cabins have everything you need!! The fishing for Walleye and Northern is unmatched any where. I haven't even mentioned the scenery!! What can I say! Go and find out! Thank You to the Viking Outpost family for a wonderful trip - One more thing - See you in 2015 -

We spent a week the end of June in 2013, and really enjoyed it. The accommodations were very good and the fishing exceeded my hopes. Enid was great and we had many good conversations and shared a few meals. The real beauty of Viking Island is that you have about 10 lakes to fish, with no one else there. I've looked at a lot of resorts in Ontario advertising "only resort on the lake". Use a google map and you will find many cabins and boat docks. Having lakes truly to ourselves, was the biggest plus to us. Since they are now housekeeping, they flew our supplies in no charge. Also, they flew in additional supplies during the week, no charge. We plan to go back in 2015.

I went for the 10th straight year to Viking Island Lodge with my son and brother (and two other friends accompanied us this year). People vote with their feet, and I have consistently voted for Viking Island Lodge. My father used to take me and my brother here in the mid 1960's, and the place is still run by the same family. It is an easy way for us cityfolk to act like we are "roughing it." A great outdoor experience without having to deal with a lot of bugs and other inconveniences. Just enough outdoors activities such as boating, portaging to a lot of nearby lakes, staying overnight in remote cabin, cooking our own meals if we want, and great fishing. But also having them cook meals for us when we want, help us with filleting fish, etc. My son has "grown up" going there, starting when he was 8 years old. I highly recommend it for a guys retreat, a bonding experience with family members, or a family outing with the ladies. Plus, it by far the best price of any of the other lodges that I checked for comparison.
