Kilkea Castle hotel captivates guests with its enchanting and elegant atmosphere, blending historic charm with modern comforts. The service at this hotel garners praise for its attentiveness, but some visitors have noted occasional disorganization. While the pristine grounds and rooms win accolades for their cleanliness, opinions on value are divided; guests appreciate the quality of amenities but are wary of the additional costs for spa services and accommodations. The castle's location is beloved for events and its historical allure, though the room experiences vary, with some lacking in cleanliness and amenities.

We were due to get married in Kilkea on the 25/07/2020 and had to postpone due to the ongoing COVID pandemic. To mark the day we were to get married, we booked into a castle room for the night as we had never actually stayed in the hotel before (although we had been for dinner, wedding evenings, spa etc). We had such a relaxing, memorable experience this weekend. The reservations team were helpful and clear regarding the new regulations throughout. All of the staff are always so friendly and attentive and that has been always very consistent throughout all the times I have visited since we attended the wedding evening there. All staff I encountered were wearing face masks or visors throughout our stay and there was clear documentation provided on check in regarding COVID hygiene measures etc.
We stayed in the Ernest Shackleton room which was lovely and spacious and had a scenic view out over the rear grounds of the castle.
As the castle restaurant was fully booked, we had dinner in Hermiones restaurant. The food there is excellent value, we both had steaks, dessert and drinks which came to 75 euro. Again the staff were in PPE and the tables were well spaced out for social distancing.
From the very first time I came to the castle back in January 2019, no matter the weather, the castle is so striking as you come up the drive. It has been beautifully restored and every room you enter is as luxurious as the next. Our stay really did not disappoint and the weekend away renewed our excitement to attempt to get married there again in a few months time.
Big thanks to all the staff (and especially Elaine) for keeping us safe and helping us have a memorable and relaxing weekend in Kilkea.

Joined my husband on a business trip, and so glad I did! From the moment we arrived (at night) the castle did not disappoint. Driving up the beautiful tree lined drive is just the beginning. The staff was immediately friendly and welcoming. The modest entrance and antique reception desk make it feel as if you are entering someone’s home and not just a hotel. There is always a fire lit in the great room downstairs, and you can spend hours sitting in a comfortable chair with a whiskey and a book.
Upstairs the rooms are stunning. Beautifully redone and comfortable, all named for prior residents of the castle.
Breakfast is a great affair, and the Castle Breakfast is just the way to start the day.
The food has been delicious, both in the bar and 1180 (the formal restaurant).
And don’t miss afternoon tea!
The entire staff has been so friendly and accommodating, including planning multiple equestrian outings for me AND cleaning my boots before packing them, so my suitcase won’t be full of mud.
I hope to return soon!

We visited the Castle for 2 nights, as a family of 16 people

we stayed in the on site lodges, however did avail of breakfast and dinner in the castle
our trip began with myself dealing with Anna Ewing on site in Reservations, Anna was fantastic from start to fnish, especially with the logistics of 16 people and changing request's.
I cannot compliment her enough.

on arrival we had our lodges ready and waiting, and check in was very easy.
the lodges are beautiful, spacious and well designed, and again suites the 6 guests staying in each house

lunch and Dinner was in Hermoines restaurant in the Club house.
Food was superb and service was first class
also has a beautiful setting as it looks out over the golf course.
Big thanks to David in the cub house who looked after us

Saturday and Sunday was Breakfast served in the hotel, again service was excellent and the food was first class

Our Saturday evening meal was in the 1180 room, and what a setting this is
the Staff setup the room especially for our family only , and we were treated like royalty.
Food once again was of the highest standard

Special word of thanks to Andrew who looked after us that night, he was excellent and really made us feel as if we were the only people in the hotel.
In fact his words were " the Castle is yours tonight"
Also a mention to Andrews trusty sidekick Justin, who was also fantastic and very Friendly

This location is 5 star plus an extra star for the staff
you could not find a better setting to take a break in Ireland

We had the most fantastic January break here and were most welcomed and entertained by Paul at the bar on Friday evening. An engaging interesting hospitable young man and excellent bar man with his own cocktails. Paul went through the facilities explained the dining experience and made us feel most welcome. Andrew also gave excellent service both in the bar and restaurant. Our Friday evening dining experience in the 1180 dining room was amazing. The food from the ala carte menu was fantastic and excellently served by Nazim and Hazim both of whom added exquisitely to our fine dining experience. What’s more we felt we had a five star experience and at a very reasonable price. We stayed in a deluxe carriage room which was superb and again very well priced
Overall we were made fell most welcome by everyone at the castle and enjoyed the unexpected but most welcome diversion of the antiques fair on Saturday. We would highly recommend this place to anyone seeking a real get away from it all but within reach of major cities.
Looking forward to a return visit

The good:
The staff are very welcoming and engaging. The service was perfect. I could not fault it at all.

The food was top notch. We ate in the bistro opposite the gold course and in the fine dining restaurant within the castle. Both experiences were amazing. The the fine dining will obviously set you back more in terms of the bill at the end but the overall experience was worth it in my opinion.

The spa was fantastic. We used the thermal pools, the suana, and booked massages. The staff here were extremely helpful and even wanted to remedy an issue we had with put accommodation which we were really grateful for.

What we didn't expect:

We booked a package deal which included a room, breakfast, and our spa treatment. Little did we know we were staying in the lodges. The lodges are not really part of the castle. They really belong more to the golf experience which is why I feel it should be made more clear what a potential guest is booking. Online it is simply just a picture of a bed when you click through but I feel the title of the accommodation should be bigger and made more clear to point out that the option is not within the castle for those looking for the real castle experience. The imagery should be a gallery so people can clearly see where they will be stating a bit like Airbnb when you click on a listing. You know exactly what you're getting so you're expectations are set.

The lodges are not bad by the way. They are clean and comfortable. But from working in hospitality for a good number of years, the room felt like a standard room I would have been familiar with in 3 star hotels (like jury's or maldron). I think if these were designed to match the castles look and feel internally, they would be a lot better. I also expected a sort of view at least of the castle from my accommodation but it's just a car park outside for the golf course users. Don't let this turn you off booking here though. I think it's a great hotel with amazing staff and good food. Just beware that if you want that real castle experience, read the details fo the room type very carefully or maybe call them to book directly.

Thank you for this feedback. Yes, the Lodges at Kilkea Castle are not the same experience as the castle/carriage rooms. It is reflexive in the price of the rooms. Adding a gallery is a good idea. Did reservations give you the option of upgrading to the castle/carriage? Again, thank you for coming and appreciate the feedback.

I organised a short staycation with my parents and partner to get a break from work, home and cocooning. I was apprehensive, to put it mildly.
From the moment I spoke with the accommodation team at Kilea Castle my mind was at ease. There are measures in place for covid throughout the castle and grounds. Hand sanitizer, face shields & masks, staff constantly sanitising used areas, furniture arrangements to ensure social distancing. I was extremely impressed.
My photos of the grounds and our rooms do not do them justice. They are comfortable, warm, inviting and a fascinating sense of history. We spent our time exploring the grounds (my dad admiring all the fish in the stream) and most importantly relaxing.
I would highly recommend the dinner in 1180 restaurant. We had a table overlooking the golf course (where a falcon was mid feast on a pigeon, a highlight for our nature loving family). The food from the starter to the petit fours was an amazing experience. Afterwards we had sat and enjoyed the sunset drinking cocktails.
We made memories that will last a lifetime and I would like to truely thank the staff for making our experience stress free and relaxing.

I had the pleasure of visiting Kilkea castle for a friends wedding in December 2020 as restrictions lifted. It was one of the highlights of the year for me. We stayed in one of the golf lodges the night before the wedding and enjoyed some of the castle food in the luxury of our lodge with the fire burning. It was simply stunning. The following morning the bridal party enjoyed the most delicious breakfast and our bags were moved to the castle. The stay in the castle was out of this world. I had visited the castle as a child and teenager playing music for weddings but hadn't been in nearly 15 years. The castle is incredible. The rooms were clean, comfortable and spacious. The bar area is super, fires burning and the staff were incredibly helpful. Robin in particular was of huge help to me throughout my visit. He carted my harp up and down to the stairs with a smile, arranged for perishables to be stored in the fridge and returned to me on leaving. He made you feel that nothing was too much trouble. The epitome of professionalism. I don't often take the time to sit and write a review of any hotel unless it really deserves it and Kilkea deserves it and more. The food was exceptional throughout - a fantastic stay. I cannot wait to get back for round two in December of 2021. Many thanks to all,
Sinéad Kelly

My Wife and I had the pleasure of staying in Kilkea Castle for 2 nights - 15th and 16th. August 2021 and it was magnificent. The castle dates from the 12th. Century but is 21st century in service, friendliness, food, comfort and location. We stayed in the Lady Elizabeth Grey room and it was spacious, spotlessly clean and innovatively had little metal brackets on the toilet seat and lid. The towels were fabulously fluffy with a shower that had marvellous water pressure +the room overlooked the golf course.
We dined in Hermionies restaurant ( which has fabulous ambience and socially distanced tables) in the Golf club and dined on fish and chips, salmon and supreme of chicken on both nights - deliciously succulent. It was an outstanding two day stay and thank you to Bianca, Tiffany, Heather, Caitríona, Sophie, Órla, David x2, Clodagh, Ashleigh, James, Michael and Duty Manger Claire for making our stay so enjoyable and memorable. As you check in, there is camera that gives you your temperature.

We stayed here in July 2020, and had a wonderful time. The rooms were fab, the meal in the 1180 restaurant was delicious and the whole experience was great. Staff were really on top of keeping everything clean so we didn't feel overly worried about Covid9 during our stay. We will definitely return. Thank you so much for a great weekend!

Second time staying here, was much quieter last nov, was very much full occupancy this time so at times felt a bit uncomfortable so we moved back to our room, due to covid fears not hotels issue more the residence so would suggest blocking some chairs by the fire so can’t be used so retain social distances. Breakfast and dinner in the hotel was lovely, bar staff v nice. The club house however the staff were never around people seated right on top of us when the large room was almost empty. Supersalad was more like a side salad as came in a tiny breakfast like brown with Quinar beets and hogs cheese only - lettuce was gone past it’s best and I fully put rotten and wilted greens was not pleasant for 12.95 felt robbed and hungry.

Remote in the carriage room didn’t work - stayed in castle last time and to be honest outside of a small walk they are very much the same

Bit disappointed this time which is a shame
