Didn't really know what to expect...but once we arrived we loved it. My wife and I stayed in a kitchenette while my daughter and grandson stayed below us. With so much to see and do we were played out and in bed by 8 PM. We had the Lodge serve us breakfast and suppers with a Belizean flare. Orlanda and Desaree are fabulous cooks. Desaree was informative about everything Belizean. Levi and Rudy were super guides for the fishing, hikes and Snorkeling. We didn't want to leave. We'll be back.

This lodge is situated on the Sittee River, convenient walking distance to Hopkins Village, and the town of Sittee River. It has several kitchenette units, with a small microwave, coffee maker, a little gas stove, fridge, private bath and two double beds. The cost was $69 plus tax which was quite reasonable. We paid $5 each for breakfast on the first morning after arriving, but was able to get groceries in town for the remainder of our stay. I was not impressed with the cold cereal and white bread and didn't feel there was enough being offered for the meal so I would not recommend paying for their meals, but certainly over all the price was well worth the stay. This lodge is under new management.

Response from riverhouselodge, Manager at River House Lodge Belize
Responded Mar 9, 2012
Thanks so much for your positive comments about River House Lodge. As the new managers, we take your information very seriously and appreciate the feedback. We are sorry you felt our breakfast bar wasn't up to your expectations. We do offer coffee, tea, milk, fresh juice, fruits, cheese, bread for toast, jams & peanut butter, as well as instant oatmeal and cereals. We also try to offer fresh baked goods when they are available. We think that is a pretty good deal for $5US. We only wish you had mentioned something to us while you were here and we would have made every effort to correct your issue. Thanks again for your positive feedback and we hope to see you again if you are in this area.

My 20-year old son and I stayed at the River House Lodge for two nights and left wishing we would have reserved more time for this part of our trip in Belize. Kara and everybody else was so friendly, and it had a great laid-back atomosphere. We went out fishing with their kayaks the first afternoon, then enjoyed the indoor pool and had drinks at the little bar that evening. Also watched a movie from their DVD selection. Levi took us on a fishing trip where we my son caught his first tarpon - actually one in the lagoon, and one in the river. We also caught snapper and barracuda. It was a blast! Levi is so knowledgable and a nice guy. The room itself was large and accomodating. It is also located only couple miles from the Sittee River Marina, and few miles from the Caribbean. We will definitely stay here again when we visit Belize again.

We traveled to the area end of February beginning of June. Weather as great. Our time here was so relaxing. We had the place to ourselves, and the couple that manages full attention. They made us feel right at home. Lots of healthy laughs. Food was good. Clean, comfortable, Quiet! away from the hustle bustle. Learning life on the river was fun and educational. Swimming Pool was a treat and so refreshing. Lots of Birds, awesome!. Ask about guides to show you the area. We were treated well and we miss it. So don't hesitate to stop in and see the area and rest our head at the River House Lodge.

I can't say enough good about the River House. Right on the bank of the beautiful Sittee River, this is a perfect place to really get into the nature and beauty of Belize, as the grounds are loaded with various tropical birds and other critters to be easily spotted.
The rooms were quaint, very clean and functional. We were happy to call it 'home' for 2 weeks.
William and Lolette were always on site and more than happy to assist with all our needs. They arranged outings suited to our interests and went above and beyond to make sure we were happy and comfortable. Lolette is an amazing cook as well and they offer to provide meals for an extra charge.
Reading other reviews here makes me think that some people went into this with heightened expectations, which is unfortunate. Remember these are rooms off a river bank in the jungle. If you're looking for a 5 star Hilton, this may not be for you. But if you're looking for a simple stay with warm, welcoming and helpful people, stop by the River House and experience what Belize has to offer.
Yes, there are a lot of bugs, no fault to the River House itself. It's Belize, do some homework prior to and bring bug spray. The rooms and main building have fully screened verandas to aid with the bugs.

What a strange place in the middle of nowhere! As resorts on hopkins beach were fully booked we had to choose somewhere close by instead.. But.. We were the only guests in what seemed a scene from Texas chainsaw.. It was desolate and eery. The rooms were clean, but the bathroom was terrible - plastic fittings and the 'shower' was a mere dribble and I was unable to wash my hair for the whole stay.. Hence booking into a luxury resort on the beach once we found availability (and only for $50 more!!) The curtains in the room are pointless - they let light through, so we had to hang towels and clothes from the window to block out the early morning sunlight. Food is not included and there is not a restaurant, nor one in walking distance. The couple that manage the place will cook for you - and the food it good - but there isn't a menu choice.
The manager will offer to take you places in his van, but the tours aren't that well known about and you will have to do a lot of the research of things to do yourself. A big con - we were not told about all the 'add ons' to the price - there was no mention that being driven places would cost, nor were we told the cost of food or items from the bar so the payment came as a bit of a shock - I suggest that this is explained to visitors on arrival.
I end on a positive, however, the manager William is lovely, he is so friendly and very willing to help and arrange his day around what you want to do. Him and his lovely wife, Lolette, are the only thing this place has going for it. We would have left early if it wasn't for them - so thank you.
The place definitely needs tweaking to make more welcoming and warm. And the 'Open' sign on the front door needs removing... A strange place to say the least.

My husband and I were booked into the River House Lodge for one week and couldn't take the first night. The shower was plugged so my husband had to stand ankle deep in dirty water. I opened the drawer of the dresser and three drawers came out at the same time and the whole thing fell apart leaving no where to put our clothes. We checked out. The manager Kara did everything she could to try to convince us to stay but it was apparent to us the absent owners of the property did not want to be bothered with ongoing maintenance. Check out Hopkins right on the beach and half the price with showers not plugged and a place to hang your hat!

Comfortable beds, excellent food prepared by the beautiful cooks Orlanda and Deseree, kind and friendly new managers Keith and Kara, owners Dodi and Quentin treated everyone like family, tour guide Levi and his helper Rudy were one of a kind (helpful, easygoing, friendly), beautiful senery, amazing tours, hikes and views. The snorkeling trip was something I could do all day. The crock tour was exciting. Happy I came to stay here for my first experience of Belize.. Already planning for the next time I come back. It was an amazing place to stay with the most kindest people I could ever have had the pleasure of meeting. Thank you River House Lodge. A place you can truly feel at home:)

This is a very nice place on the Sittee river, only a few miles from the carribean sea, it has a very homestyle atmosphere, the staff is very friendly and helpful, there is a lot of things to do in the area, we did a lot of fishing and caught a lot of fish, we went croc sighting on New Years eve. We hiked up to Antelope falls for a awesome view from the top. The quide and the cook are very good at what they do, the tours were great and the food was delicious. We would advise for anyone to visit this lodge. We will go back again for sure
