Coming here as part of a biking tour, we were totally charmed. This is deservedly a Relais & Chateau property, with charming cottages and suites for a small number of guests, situated at the edge of the marina, a stone's throw from the tiny town of Ganges on Salt Spring Island. It felt like old England or perhaps southern France: We stayed in the Post Cottage, which reminded us of Jemima Puddleduck: half-timbered, with a standing (electric) heating stove, the cottage set in the midst of a lovely garden. Breakfasts and dinners at the Hastings House manor restaurant were superb, by far the best food we had in the Vancouver islands, with excellent preparation of extremely fresh scallop and halibut; interesting breakfast eggs drizzled with pesto -- in short, high level food in the middle of almost nowhere. The staff was efficient, unfailingly pleasant, and down to earth.

Not at all a bad place. Some shortcomings in the service for the price, for sure. It’s now 7 pm, have been out of the room for 6 hours. Returned, and room was not made up. I called the front desk. No help. I’d understand, as I had the do not disturb sign up until 1 pm. Thing is, though, that the room instructions inside the room specifically say that they’ll make up the room if the sign is gone before 230. If true, exceptional service. In the breach, though? Sigh. View is nice though. Food is better than ok although very expensive Went to talk to a front desk clerk earlier about a day on the town. . Wife said ‘that’s the not nice one; was hoping for a different one’. So I guess that’s that. Some things great. Other things less than….

Nineteen years ago my wife and I had our first meal on Saltspring island at the Hastings House. It was the last leg of our honeymoon and we had become mesmerized by the island. The meal capped the day. A few days ago my wife and I celebrated our 19th anniversary at the same restaurant, same table. (We now live on the island most of the year.) The food was amazing! We both had halibut and shared a bottle of the local wine, a lovely Pinot Gris by Gary Oaks winery. The halibut was served with a creamy parmesan polenta and the flavor enhanced by the Dijon mustard glace. Everything was excellent including the low key yet attentive service by our waiter. Their reputation as the finest restaurant on the island is still intact! Many thanks to the staff, from reservations to desert, you were great.

Hastings House is located in a beautiful setting on Salt Spring Island. My sister, cousin and I stayed for 4 nights at this charming property. The service was excellent, what one would expect from a Relais & Chateaux property. The food was superb. My sister is vegan so there's often a challenge when she travels to accommodate her dietary requirements. The Chef at the Hastings House however, went above and beyond to provide her with incredible vegan dishes - she was "over the moon".

My husband, daughter and I stayed at the Hastings House. They gave us a a truly enchanting experience! Everyone we dealt with was very friendly and accommodating. It all began with Eli, our shuttle bus driver who gave us a rundown of Salt Spring Island. The welcome at reception was gracious and Karen walked us to our room and gave us time to absorb the grounds. Our first impression of the grounds made us think of an ethereal, bucolic fairy tale like setting. Our room faced the meadow. The decor was timeless and included fresh flowers, chocolate, robes for each of us, warm muffins at the door early in the morning. Breakfast service was welcoming, they made it a point to give each guest a view of the harbour. The service was prompt, friendly and accommodating, Teal was our server the 1st day. Dinner was excellent and Serenity our server was animated and pleasant. Ky ended our stay with arranging a shuttle back to the ferry with an easy no rush check-out. If you want a memorable stay in Salt Spring Island the Hastings House is the place to be!

We spent 4 nights at this property. The property itself is charming. We loved our 2 storey suite (West Farmhouse) as well as the views of the harbour. My massage and facial in the spa was also excellent. However, overall, we did not feel we received value for the price, and having stayed at many Relais & Chateaux hotels, several elements of the experience were underperforming. The housekeeping services were poor. The first day it took 3 calls to have our room cleaned. The excuse was given that the do not disturb sign was on the door but this was not the case. When the room was finally cleaned at 5 pm, they did not do a thorough job. Garbages were not empties. Used water glasses were not replaced. Furniture, which had been moved to accommodate the pullout bed, was not put in its proper place. Also, turndown service was not offered. I have never stayed at a Relais & Chateaux property which did not provide turndown service. It meant we either had to make our daughter’s pull our bed ourselves or have the bed set up in the room during the day, which somewhat defeats the purpose of having a living room. The restaurant was also not up to Relais & Chateaux standards. Certain main courses on the dinner menu, such ad scallops on Caesar salad, belonged on a lunch menu. we dined at Hastings House twice and the meals were just ok. We had a far superior dinner at the House of Piccolo in town. The breakfasts were bad and the breakfast menu did not have much selection. An eggs Benedict and a waffle or pancake dish should be added to the menu. Some of the staff were unprofessional or improperly trained. For instance, while we were reading in the lounge area by the bar we could hear staff talking amongst themselves about personal matters in a very loud voice. For the price, we would have expected better service and a superior dining experience. We would not stay at this property again.

I received this stay as a gift, and what a gift it was! The property is beautifully laid out and well maintained. The veiws of Ganges Harbour from our private balcony were breath taking and the room was perfectly laid out with thoughtful touches throughout. Our breakfast was delicious, the view beautiful, and the service friendly, and warm. Our server even gave us a great suggestion on where to go for a lovely beach walk. From start to finish, it was a fantastic stay and we will be back in the future!

Kyle at the reception made magic to find us a room and a table since we failed to properly confirm our two night stay. Very professional welcome. Great food and hat a view. The rooms are comfy and modern. The place is well located with a very cool pub a few stairs below. Highly recommended.

We stayed at Hastings House mid September for our wedding anniversary and were very disappointed. At bedtime our first evening, we discovered that our bathroom was filthy - the shower curtain was dirty and needed a good wash, our bathroom smelled of urine, the toilet seat had not been properly cleaned, the floor around the toilet base was stained and the shower had mould in the grout. We went to bed with the bathroom door tightly closed so we wouldn't smell the odour from our bed. We expressed our displeasure with office staff the first morning and a cleaning staff was sent in. Management did not follow up with us although we did see who appeared to be the housekeeper who asked how our room was after the clean. We thanked them for the new shower curtain and noted that the mould was still on the grout, there was still the odour and stains on the floor in front of the toilet and a dirty toilet bowl. Nothing further was done. Although we were not interested in a full daily cleaning service, we did need clean wine and water glasses and coffee cups each day as well as a few fresh towels. We were typically home from our day’s outing (3pm or later) and wishing to have a beverage on our patio before anyone had come into our room to replace these items. One day, it was after 5 pm and we went to the front desk to inquire. We were told that housekeeping were taking care of the suites with new check ins first and the existing guests would be taken care of last. No apology, no offer to run and fetch two wine glasses for us - we certainly didn’t feel “centre stage” (as per Hastings House and Relais & Chateau's promise) - rather like the “poor relations”. We made enquiries one day about a concert in the park that we had seen mention of and didn’t have details for. The desk manager didn’t know about this event but agreed to find out and follow up. We wondered too if the property might have a folding chair or two we could take with us and were told he would check and get back to us. No follow up at all. Guests before us that have complained to management or office staff or written Trip Advisor Reviews have focused of late on service or the condition of their suites and their issues seem to have fallen on deaf ears of the management and owners of this property. Responses from management have been of this nature : “we tried to please you”, “see what we did”, “due to Covid-19 we are short staffed”, “sorry you couldn’t reach us after 8pm with your emergency but internet and phone reception is poor on the Island”, and “hope you will give us a try again in the future, obviously there was a glitch this time” . The issues of 2020 and early 2021 seem not to have been looked into in order to improve as promised. This lack of follow through left us wanting to share our concerns with other perspective guests as well as Relais & Chateaux - in particular about cleanliness and hospitality. What has happened to attentiveness and sincerity in this “prestigious hotel”? Do the current owners know what their management team are up to? In our opinion, the excuse of Covid-19 and shortage of staff does not fully “cut it” for us. In Hastings House Guest Services' written welcome, Covid-19 standards are explained - "our housekeepers have taken extra precautions to ensure that the cleanliness of your suite exceeds current sanitation expectations". In “Our Protection Promise” (also left in our room), we are promised by Alan Lawley General Manager that we have implemented ongoing training on housekeeping and hygiene protocols. Our un-wiped toilet paper holder, toilet seat, floor tiles, shower tiles, shower curtain were certainly not part of this service and promise. We wonder if Covid protocols are being followed at all. On September 17th, a week after our stay and in response to the GM wanting to speak with us, we made ourselves available and more than a week later still have not heard back. Our Anniversary trip was negatively impacted and we write this review to other travellers of what they might also expect if staying at Hastings House.

First and foremost, Ms. Startup we apologize that we did not meet your expectations during your recent stay. However, we must respond to your comments and to correct some of the inaccuracies. Hastings House Country House Hotel is proud of our award-winning, attentive and sincere guest service and the level of engagement our associates have with our valued guests. As you can see by previous reviews, our property excels at providing a high level of customer service and, if I may say, great satisfaction. While it will be clear to readers that your feedback stands out on its own and, by that very fact, is potentially exaggerated and/or embellished, an accurate response is necessary. Upon inspections prior and after your stay we found no problems with any smell of urine in your unit. Upon doing a full investigation, your room was checked and prepared by our HSKG staff and double checked by a HSKG supervisor. During these challenging times in our industry, occasionally our “refresh service” has been slightly delayed, but all guests are notified if required. All inquiries you made at our front desk were addressed professionally and daily complementary shuttle service was offered. I understand that you requested a complementary additional night stay but we were unable to accommodate you due to the fact we were sold out and that the partial refund offered was unacceptable to you. It is also important to understand to our TA readers that I personally reached out to you by phone three times and emailed without a return call or correspondence. Please note that I have also reached TA’s corporate office and Relais & Chateaux to explain the situation. I also stand by my “Protection Promise” and my entire team follows strict Covid-19 policies to ensure our guests safety and security.
