Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club offers a blend of traditional charm and modern amenities, set against a picturesque backdrop that many find appealing for its proximity to Edinburgh. While the hotel's atmosphere is often described as warm and inviting, especially with festive decorations, some guests feel that the value proposition is diminished due to overpriced services and dated aspects of the rooms and facilities.
The staff's friendliness and the cleanliness of the hotel earn positive remarks, although occasional service hiccups and maintenance issues are called out by travelers.

This is a nice hotel with some positives, but overall, disappointing. First the positives. The hotel is attractive and public areas, (except for the outside bar balcony of the golf lodge- see below, are nicely presented), staff are smiling, friendly and helpful and the overall atmosphere in the hotel is good. Our room was clean and pleasant and bed was comfortable. The hotel is in a lovely setting, its gardens and grounds are beautifully maintained, no doubt reflecting the importance it attaches to its golf heritage. The downside, in our opinion was in the food and drinks. The hotel clearly skimps on these, despite expensive pricing; the food quality felt rather cheap and we felt short changed on the drinks. I like the odd beer, and on first order at the bar, noticed my pint mug filled about half a centimetre short of the top. The barman was happy to top it up when I asked. (by the way the glass was a standard pint tumbler without fill line below the rim, so should be full to provide a pint). I was interested though to observe that all of the beers served to other customers were similarly served short, as was the next beer I ordered on my second night, in the golf bar. This appeared to me to be a deliberate policy. At almost £6 a pint, that's really not on. My wife prefers wine and in hotels we usually find it more economic to buy a bottle between us for the evening. We asked for the house white, a Spanish wine at £21 for the bottle. We didn't expect a brilliant wine, but frankly it was awful. I wouldn't normally check, but as it was so poor, looked at its rating on Vivino, which was only 2.9 (anything below 3.0 is poor). Clearly a very cheap wine with substantial mark up. Food was OK but not of brilliant quality. The sticky toffee pudding and ice cream for example very poor, non premium, mass produced, cheap quality. (You would expect better in a Beefeater by a Premier Inn). Finally, the outside first floor balcony to the golf bar is very tired. Walls, floor and tables chipped and tarnished and all a bit shabby and dirty looking. Would I go to this hotel again? It wasn't terrible but seriously over-priced for the standard offered - it felt just a bit better than a Premier Inn but is substantially more expensive. In essence, it wouldn't be my first choice next time.

Went to this hotel for Hogmanay and pulling up for the hotel was rather impressive. The reception area is quite small to deal with vast number of check ins. The check in staff were friendly enough. The rooms are ok, but the bathrooms are very outdated. There’s no temperature control on the baths so you could end up scolding yourself and there’s no bath mats provided. We had a junior suite and in the mini bar was only 2 bottles of water which is quite poor considering it’s supposed to be a suite. The pillows are extremely soft which can make it hard to sleep if ur used to a firmer pillow. The seats in the cocktail lounge and restaurant areas again outdate and very worn out. The breakfast…I’d say it’s very similar to that at a Brewers Fayre…mushrooms were shrivelled, the milk at one point was off, we got told the scrambled eggs are actually powered ( by the manager no less!) you had to wait 15/20 min or so to actually get seated for breakfast and even then it’s carnage! The watermelon was rather soggy and the other fruits on offer didn’t look too appealing…so yes breakfast here is very unappealing ( prob get better choice at a Maccies!) The food in the main restaurant tho was rather nice esp the fillet steak and peppercorn sauce. Most of the staff were attentive and friendly. The food at the Hogmanay was ok (nothing to rave about ) the beer was very flat even after a barrel change and even after that it tasted disgusting. We waited around 30 min to finally get seated after been from room to room ( poor organisation skills!). The hotel is around 20 min into Edinburgh city and tbh would I stay here again?? Definitely not! I know there’s far better hotels than this ….(The Balmoral no less!!) the grounds around the hotel are lovely but everything else really let this experience down. So yes it’s most certainly a 3 star not a 4 star!

My fiance and I stayed at the Dalmahoy Hotel for a week, having never visited before. The grounds are really lovely, it's a smashing drive from the main road to the hotel entrance and we found ample parking at the hotel.
We were welcomed by Neil, who was very friendly and gave us a warm welcome at reception. John checked us in and he also was super friendly, gave good directions to our room (which was a bit away from the reception) and always said hello when we saw him.
Our room was really lovely, very comfortable, and the bed was so cosy! We had a lovely view and the temperature in our room was easy to control to suit ourselves. Having a fridge in the room was so useful considering the length of our stay! The bathroom was perfectly fine, everything was really clean and tidy.
Breakfast was included with our booking and we found there was a reasonable selection of food, though on quieter days, we did find that the food has sat for a while as sausages and bacon had dried out quite a bit. However, I would say that the staff kept the food well replenished so there wasn't much of a wait for fresh food. Also, there was a young lady who was the maitre d' for breakfast a number of times during our visit (we didn't catch her name) who was absolutely brilliant! Really polite and so welcoming :)
On our first night, we ate in the cocktail bar and it was a bit disappointing. We shared a chicken caesar salad and the mac and cheese croquettes. I did enjoy the croquettes, but found the salad was bland and the chicken was a bit tough (as though it was pre-cooked and thawed). We chose to ate out for all our other meals as I thought the food was a bit expensive for the quality.
We used the pool and the gym during our stay and found both to be really clean and well equipped.
Overall, our stay was really great and I felt it was good value for money! The setting is lovely, but I felt the food really let it down. Would definitely visit again and really appreciated the effort the staff went to to help make our stay enjoyable

Stayed at the Dalmahoy for one evening only, and was glad to leave the following morning. Safe to say that this hotel did not meet any of the expectations provided to us by either its marketing or its name as a ‘Country Club’. The decor is tired and dated with the Reception area particularly cold and unwelcoming. Our deluxe double room had broken tiles on the bathroom floor; the shower was a very small mixer tap (also broken) with a curtain over the bath; the windows were draughty and filthy; only 2 bottles of water in the fridge, nothing else; minimal tea bags and coffee provided. We ate in the Pentland restaurant as despite checking-in at 4:30pm we were told the Brasserie wasn’t taking any more reservations. We later saw that this was due to staffing issues, and not because it was full. There was also no seating available in the Cocktail Bar, where snacks were being served. Our meal in the Pentland was awful. The waiting staff were very attentive, but the food was disgraceful and not what the website terms as ‘fine dining’. We went for breakfast early to avoid the foretold queues. Very minimal provisions, nothing special, cold plates and a simply dull layout. I had to request 2 fried eggs, which arrived promptly. The 2 sad eggs had brick hard yolks and had obviously been sitting somewhere having been cooked some time beforehand. That really sums up the careless standard of food being dished out here. Would not recommend this hotel. Very disappointing.

It's to live a fairy tale. The main building is a beautiful castle, which is located in an extensive, well-kept green area, full of flowers and a very large golf course. It is 15-20 minutes from the city of Edinburgh and also about that from the airport. It can be seen that it was expanded to include the bedroom area and the architecture was maintained. It's quite big. It is in a country club, with water activities (there is a heated pool, which we made use of) as well as a golf course, gym and sauna. We went to spend a night in celebration of the silver wedding and we were very delighted with what we found. The breakfast is very filling and delicious. There are 2 restaurants, one in the main building, more luxurious and a little more expensive, and another also with a good menu, and a slightly more affordable price, but not excessive. Remember that there are no options for other restaurants nearby.

This has got to be the worse spa experience I’ve had. I’ve been here once before on my wedding night, the fire alarm went off in the middle of the night, staff had been making toast, then the breakfast was terrible service and hardly any choice of food. We thought we’d give the leisure facilities a go this time and phoned before we went as it was a Sunday afternoon. The staff said it was fine to come out and after the baby swimming lessons, we would have full use of the pool, sauna and stream room. Front desk staff were not friendly but ignored that and went to change. The changing rooms could’ve done with a good clean. Through into the pool area and whilst the baby class ended, endless teenagers and families arrived, all jumping and screaming. I’m very chilled out usually but the noise was crazy and the pool attendant paid no attention to what anyone was doing, he was too busy on his phone. The baby class teacher cordoned off an area for serious swimmers so we thought at last we’d get some space. Sadly not. The pool attendants had no control over the pool and then let all ages into the lane swimming too. He then went and opened the fire doors for 15 minutes as he was too hot obviously whilst we all froze. The next attendant came in and she too sat on her phone the entire time. I have disabilities and just needed a small part of the pool to exercise, but it was impossible. We paid £52 for the pleasure of a terrible visit. We asked to speak to the manager and waited for ages but gave up as we couldn’t wait any longer. On emailing him, he suggested coming back another day during the week around 8-10pm. I explained that would not fit in with our shifts and could he refund us for the awful experience. He refused. It’s important other people understand this is a crazy busy pool, there’s no jacuzzi, the staff couldn’t care less and all they’re after is your money. The attendants could do with some training in how to talk to guests and get off their phones. All in all we would never return, it’s no better than it was on our last visit for our wedding. There’s so many better places to go who appreciate their guests.

Reading some of the other reviews I wondered if I was actually staying at the same hotel. We had a wonderful overnight stay. Welcome on arrival was warm and friendly, check in was quick and Ben really helpful with local information on how to get into Edinburgh Centre. Yes it is a big hotel and finding your room is tricky but it does get your steps in. The leisure club is great we had the pool to ourselves and the changing rooms are amazing. Large spacious well designed with great showers and plenty of hairdryers. Room 243 looked out onto a courtyard. Beds were comfy and as I am a pillow snob I appreciated the pillows were feather and fabulous. Being able to have breakfast outside was a bonus and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. Restaurant manager Susie was great at breakfast and was so good with the guests including taking pictures for them. Without exception the staff were friendly and helpful everybody smiled and said hello. Our room was spotless and the housekeeping staff were all so helpful when we got lost trying to find our room. After Covid finding good staff in hospitality is hard and the Dalmahoy must have a good management team as the staff were all very good and well trained. For a big hotel I was very impressed that it is still very personal when we bumped into Ben from checkin in the corridor he stopped to speak and asked if we had enjoyed the show we had told him we were going to the previous night. This was a rearranged booking as my daughter had been unwell in July. It was lovely that the hotel honoured the booking but I was disappointed when rebooking I had to do it over the telephone and the room cost was £243 compared to the hotels own online price of £191.70. When I queried this I was told bluntly I was lucky I had been able to rearrange and they didn’t need to. This unfortunately left me speechless with not high expectations of our visit pleased that the frontline staff were much more welcoming. It would be great if you opened up some rooms to be dog friendly.

We stayed for 4 nights in this lovely luxury hotel as a treat for the Christmas period. The grounds and the hotel itself are spotlessly clean with great views. All the staff couldnt do enough for you, they were all very friendly and helpful, The main cocktail bar had a vast selection of drinks to choose from and the cocktails were very nice (although quite overpriced) The room was large and supplied with tea/coffee facilities as well as handwash and shampoo/conditioner in the bathroom. The bed was very comfortable as was the chairs, there is also a hairdryer, safe and ironing board/iron provided. As it was my boyfriends 50th birthday next week there was a complimentary card, truffles and 2 complimentary drinks vouchers provided on arrival which was a nice touch. The only negatives I would say is that with it being the festive period the spa facilities were only open limited times, we were not getting confirmed times as all the staff were unsure. The food was also only served until early evening, I think this should be 24-7 for residents, especially in a 4+ star hotel, there is nowhere nearby in walking distance other than the Ratho Park pub across the road, this was closed on boxing day and also closed early on most evenings. The hotel bistro was also closed the whole duration of our stay, this would of been nice to visit. All in all a lovely place to stay and a lovely Christmas had. Thank you Dalmahoy.

Really disappointed with our stay, this was our 3rd time staying here, 2nd time being 7 yrs ago and how things have changed. Sadly won’t be returning, breakfast times horrendous, tables not made up when we were showed to a table, not once in 3 days were we asked if we wanted any tea or coffee. No fresh fruit other than melon empty containers not being replenished, bacon and sausage under cooked so we had an Omelette for 3 breakfasts, no crusty rolls or bread, just cheap sliced bread. Really noisy room, got woken up everyday at 7:30am with the lawnmowers and staff going about their business. The Hotel is really looking tired now in all aspects, Staff were really rude during breakfast serving, had better service and food else where and for a lot cheaper, we paid top notch for our room we expected a lot more Dalmahoy sadly we didn’t get it, avoid booking this Hotel

Had the worst customer experience with these people. They seem nice during your stay, but after you leave no care for you or whatsoever.
Money has been deducted from my creditcard, what was supposed to be a ''reservation'' and this even happened before check out...
After check out the reservation + my actual room service has been deducted, so i basically paid 100 Punds for a hamburger and some fries..
It's already ridiculous that you cant order room service without a reservation on your creditcard. Often you can just pay your bill at the checkout.
Have been trying to explain this situation and get my ''reservation'' back for two weeks and they have decided to ignore me and even somebody hang up the phone on me last week, when i started to say the word creditcard.
I would never go near this hotel ever again. Customer service is rediculous.
