Sehr positiv, klare Empfehlung!

When asking the question, "Did you like Banos or Liana Lodge better?" of our group, everyone said Banos. But! No one would miss this stop: exploring the river, hiking the jungle, swimming without being devoured by the fish, eating lunch off of a leaf, and visiting a local home. Those tours are just a few of those included in the price of lodging at Liana. We added the night hike, for 25 bucks extra, don't miss it.

The meals are not well reported on here, and are worthy of a 5 star rating on their own. What a pleasant experience to sit by candlelight and taste the delicately prepared gourmet meals that are scratch made from local farmers harvest. It's all part of the local effort to support each other and the economy.

If we were visiting again, I'd bring a well organized supply of clothing that provided separation between clean and used clothes; once they're wet, they don't dry quickly, if at all. The showers are hot and water plentiful, but you really appreciate clean options in clothing after peeling todays outfit off before an evening shower (also by candlelight) just before dinner.

Riding the bus in and out? No problem, but you will either need to speak a little Spanish or have some printed translations to ask the helpful locals for help navigating the bus stations. We ended up standing in the bus aisle all the way back to Tena from Liana Lodge after being dropped off by boat at the road after check out, the bus was so full. I think the bus ride was a big part of the experience, so I'm not complaining. I may even be jealous that you can travel for a dollar per hour of bus time here, though even with full buses I'm not sure how they cover expenses! Buy tickets with assigned seats at least an hour ahead of the departure time, when possible, for the best luck seating your group together, when originating from a terminal.

Long sleeves and bug spray are a must in the daytime, shorts and t shirt were ok for dinner as the bugs weren't biting after dark, and it felt good to cool down after a day of sweating.

Friendly staff, clean accommodations- we may return someday with more of our children for this once in a lifetime jungle experience at a reasonable price.

Liana Lodge is not a luxury hotel. There is no electricity in the cabins (candles are provided) nor hot water in the sinks. The cabins are duplexes with open ceilings between, so you will probably hear your neighbors if the other room is occupied.

Otherwise, Liana is a charming eco-lodge on the river in the jungle. The food is good, although you will not have many options, and the staff is friendly, though most of them speak no English (some people, including my wife and I, came with a bi-lingual guide). The cabins have twin beds, and the water pressure in the shower is adequate.

There is no road to the lodge, so arrivals and departures are via a 10 minute boat ride in a long, motorized canoe. Liana's relative proximity to civilization is one of its main attractions. At least one of the more upscale lodges deeper in the jungle requires a two hour motorized boat ride plus another hour in a paddled canoe, each way. When one is planning to spend two or three nights, the extra boat time would be a major hinderance.
Activities are limited, and at least one of the guided hikes is strenuous ... 6+ hours in rubber boats. There are inner tubes available for swimming (no pirhanas). During the two days we were there, a group of squirrel monkeys came right through the trees around the cabins three times. The nearby animal rehabilitation center is quite interesting (free admission for Lodge guests).

If you go, take the following items which are not provided or available at the Lodge: flashlight, shampoo, and bug spray (oddly, no mosquitoes at night and neither West Nile Virus nor malaria is a threat).

Plan to go to bed and get up early. The resident roosters sound off at 5 am, anticipating sunrise at 6.

We came here on a whim while traveling through Ecuador. It was definitely a highlight of the trip. Getting to the lodge is an experience in itself. The canoe ride really makes you feel like you are going somewhere very secluded. The food was wonderful...I looked forward to every meal. I recommend going on a jungle hike. You will see things you have only read about. The atmosphere of the lodge was very relaxing, and we enjoyed getting to know fellow travelers.
You won't regret coming here!

Fantastic experience, getting there from Quito required a bus then canoe down the river into the jungle. Great food, wonderful atmosphere in the dining room. A visit to the animal refuge is a must and a worthy donation.Falling asleep after blowing out the candles ( and checking the bed for spiders and bugs)listening to the jungle noises if fantastic experience. I could have watched the monkeys playing in the trees around the cabin all day!

My husband, 22 year old daughter and I traveled to Liana Lodge in mid-May. We took a bus from Banos to Tena and from there caught a bus to Puerto Barantilla where our motorized canoe was waiting to zip us down the Arajuno River (a tributary of Rio Napo). The instructions the lodge gave us for the bus trip were perfect. From the moment we set foot in the canoe we had arrived. The boatman helped us with our heavy bags both loading and unloading and within 15 minutes we arrived at Liana Lodge. We were met by a Swiss volunteer who gave us herbal tea, explained their project and gave us an orientation before showing us our rooms. We wanted a room for the three of us but they didn't have that so gave us a whole hut divided into two rooms so my daughter had her own room. The huts were amazing. We were in No. 7 which is the furthest one from the main dining room. No electricity or windows, just candles and screens on the windows. There was also a beautiful porch with a hammock and an incredible view over the jungle canopy. The beds were really comfortable and had great bedding. There were no bugs in the room or mosquitos at all. There is no malaria here in this area we were assured and in any case I never had a single mosquito bite the whole time. We immediately went down to the river to have a swim. We floated back and forth with the inner tubes. The water was refreshing with a gentle current so it wasn't too hard to paddle against it. All the meals were included and the food was delicious! My new favorite treat was putting popcorn in the soup instead of croutons - delicious! There was also a nice riverside bar where we could have a drink before dinner by the river. Everything was perfect. The walkup to the rooms in the dark is an experience. You are very likely to see nocturnal spiders, frogs and other creepy crawlies if you are observant. A headlamp is a must here! I had the best sleep listening to the night sounds and waking up to the sound of rain and birds. The next two days we had tours with our guide Juan. He was amazing! The first day we did a 5 hour walk in the jungle with Juan showing us every type of plant, tree, fruit and animal and what they were used for. Luckily my daughter spoke enough Spanish to understand and translate to us otherwise this would have been disappointing for us not to learn all he had to tell us. We stopped for lunch by a river where he pilled a full lunch out of his small pack and served it on banana leaves. Our second tour was to Anaconda Island where we learned about the agriculture of the local Quechua tribe, watched how they made chicha and tried our hands at blow guns. We also had a chance to go to the Amazoonico animal refuge which was really great. Lots of interesting animals and stories about how they got there told by a young German volunteer. On our last night there a huge tarantula spider made himself a guest in the kitchen and dining room. He was a huge hit with the photographers. So I could go on and on about what a highlight this excursion was. We paid $250 each for 3 nights including all our delicious meals and tours. It was worth every penny. I will never forget this experience. Only a couple of items to complain about. The first was finding a used condom on the windowsill when I moved the curtain back one morning. We are still laughing about it but it was pretty disgusting at the time. I give them one less point for cleanliness because of that because I was more prepared to see some creepy bug in my room! The other was a glitch in the bank transfer payment process that made the amount we paid tootherwise this would have been disappointing for us not to learn this their Swiss bank about $20 less than what it should have been. They asked us to cover half of this. I didn't really think that was so cool. We already paid a large fee to our bank to do a transfer so I don't see why we had to also pay the fee that their bank charged. They should just get with the times and use credit cards. Those are the only negatives though so not enough to take away from the whole experience. Thank you Liana Lodge!

It is a nice getaway from the busy city life. You have no electricity or internet and the only sounds are the sounds of the jungle. Food is excellent and most of the tours they offer are really interesting. Also, a stay there is for a good cause, helping the indigenous people and local wild life.

Other reviews cover off what the lodge offers/does, so I'll just say that our stay at this lodge was relaxing and a lot of fun. It's not deep in the amazon so it's a good introductory for those who don't want to stay in an expensive lodge but aren't prepared to rough it in the amazon yet.

How many guests can your lodge accommodate?
Answer from Liana L
Estiamadas, our Lodge can hold up to 43 guests, with one queen size and one single bed in each cabana. Since there are a lot of single room reservations, we usually have around 10 - 25 guests at a time. Saludos cordiales Leo
