We stayed two nights here as a family of four. We loved it! We had the large private room (with 5 beds) and a private bath. This is a great place just out of town. Yes, you can hear from road noise at night, but we slept just fine. Yes, it is a composting toilet, but it didn’t smell at all and our girls got a kick out of “flushing” it with sawdust. The homemade breakfast was excellent and for a few bucks we also ordered dinner there. Tony, the owner, also took us on a great tour. He is the nicest, most laid back, and knowledgeable man we’ve met in Ecuador! We highly recommend this place and his tours!

We had an amazing stay here! From the moment we arrived (much later than expected due to the bus from Quito taking forever), we were taken care of. The staff ordered us pizza, got us fresh water, showed us our room (amazing, clean, comfy), and helped us contact the people at our rafting trip we had booked prior to arrival. We also did a day tour through the hostal (caves and waterfalls) and it was INCREDIBLE. A true authentic experience in the Amazon jungle and so so beautiful. The staff, no matter what they were doing, was always willing to help us call a taxi, get us water or a beer, etc. Also, the breakfast was incredible. Absolutely recommend!!

This is one of the best places I haver ever stayed on vacation! We spent 4 nights here in Tena, in the Amazon rainforest area of Ecuador a day's drive from Quito. Though located in a small city, as soon as I entered the property, I felt transported to a very quiet, jungle setting, with plants, huge trees, flowers of bright colors. The buildings fit into the ecological green world, well designed. The main lodge has a porch where they serve a tremendous array of fresh breakfast foods. The porch overlooks trees and bushes with hummingbirds and butterflies. At one end, my son was delighted to find hanging rings to exercise on.
We rented 2 rooms just a short walk up the hill, simple and beautifully designed in wood, with art on the walls and views of the gardens. Very serene, clean and quiet. All have special composting toilets, sweet smelling and easy to use.
The owners, Tony and Erin and their staff are terrific, so helpful in telling us about the region. Tony offers a great number of great tours. On our first day, we went on a full day whitewater rafting trip on a remote Level 3 river. We had a fine young guide in our raft and Tony was beside us in his kayak, doing expert maneuvers. We all had great fun! The next day we went by wooden boat, to meet indigenous Kichwa people, to learn of their skills, crafts We swam, hiked, saw lots of animals, birds, including caimans quetzals. We hiked through an animal rescue center. On the way back, Tony pointed out monkeys at river's edge, We sighted so many, leaping from tree to tree, many with babies, holding on the parents' backs!!!
I would go back in a heart beat!
MANY THANKS!!!

Very nice, relaxing and friendly place just outside of Tena. Toni and his team make you feel comfortable right from the beginning and after some days you somehow feel like belonging to this place.Relaxing in the hammocks, watching birds in the garden or going on a tour with Toni, there's plenty to do and see.I went kayaking with Toni on Rio Napo which qas really great.Toni is a professional kayak guide who can doubtlessly help you improve your skills. All in all, I can definitely recommend this place

+ relaxing atmosphere, nice beds, hammocks, beautiful garden with lot's of birds, well organised (kayak) tours, delicious breakfast, outside of Tena but still within walking distance to the center

- the main street can be a bit noisy

I found this hostel in Lonely Planet and the description matched the reality perfectly. With a heavy backpack it is quite a walk uphill but it took 5 minutes by taxi to get there. It felt as if we arrived in the jungle. The room was simple but comfortable, there were hammocks in the balcony. I liked most enjoying abundant breakfast at a long table - all the guests sharing the meal. I think this was the best breakfast we had in Ecuador: in addition to the usual scrambled eggs, there was yoghurt, muesli, fresh juice, fruit, fresh bread... We went on a jungle tour with a different operator and when we came back, we had to kill several hours. Hostal Pakay hostess was kind enough to let us stay there and we enjoyed delicious dinner. One of the best memories from Ecuador!

I visited Hostel Pakay with a group of 21 college students on a study abroad experience. Our initial plan of staying for four days was extended to three weeks when national protests disrupted travel plans for the entire country of Ecuador. The entire staff at Hostel Pakay was incredibly friendly and accommodating. We worked alongside them and spoke with them often, learning about hidden gems in Tena and their goals to make the Hostel entirely self-sustaining. Their chemical toilets are one of the first steps in that process. The housing accommodations were also very nice and we enjoyed relaxing in the hammocks.

Hostal Pakay was one of the best, if not the best, hostel/hotel/airbnb I have ever stayed. The property and cabins were beautiful and the owners, Tony and Erin, go out of their way to make you feel at home. In addition, the tours Tony offers of the Amazon are outstanding and very authentic. Tony is very knowledgeable and happy to answer any and all questions in fluent English, Spanish or German. Additionally, he wants you to have a great experience - on one of the days we were touring it rained the whole day so Tony moved part of our tour to the next day to ensure we did not miss out on seeing animals (this was supposed to be his day off). If you're thinking about going to Tena, look no further than Hostal Pakay. The tours, rooms, and extremely kind, helpful, and personable hosts made this a very memorable stay. I 100% recommend. Thank you so much Erin and Tony!

A wonderul place not too far from the centre of Tena. Most places of interest in town can be reached within 15-20 min by foot. Taxi costs $1.50.
The place itself is hidden away in a little private jungle, which flourishes thanks to the compost toilets. The owners are incredibly lovely and very helpful, and the breakfast is spectacular. This is easily one of the best places to stay in Ecuador!

It feels like you're in a jungle reserve while still being a very reasonable walk away from town. Tony has incredible knowledge of the area.

It's a great place to be if you're a kayaker and want to explore the amazing rivers around Tena. They also set up all kinds of tours and the overall vibe was very laid back. Highly recommended!

Hostal Pakay is hands down the best hotel/hostel i've ever stayed at. Erin and Tony, the hosts, are unbelievably kind and went above and beyond to make us feel at home. They helped us coordinate taxis to Cotopaxi (instead of the usual return to Quito), provided recommendations for other activities in Ecuador and were always happy to help. The hostal itself is beautiful, and truly feels like a jungle resort. On top of that, the tours were very well organized, informative, authentic and beautiful. We booked the 3 night 4 day package, and every single activity was perfect. Tony (the guide) is incredibly knowledgeable, more than happy to answer any questions and doesn't miss a thing - he spotted so many animals during our hikes that we would never have seen by ourselves. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for an amazing experience in the Amazon, and if i'm ever back in Ecuador I will absolutely stay here again.

Also, can anyone tell me if a single ensuite has more than one 1 single bed in it? I am trying to find lodging for 3 single women and 1 single man (the man to have a separate room from the women)
