Bel & The Dragon at The Red Lion in Wendover garners compliments for its exceptional service, with many guests highlighting the staff's friendliness and helpfulness. The hotel's 'olde' world charm contributes to its cozy atmosphere, further accentuated by the complimentary Sloe Gin found in the well-maintained and spotless rooms. Nestled in the heart of Wendover, the hotel's location offers easy access to local attractions and a lively bar scene. While the rooms are generally celebrated for their comfort and cleanliness, some guests have noted noise issues. The amenities, including the welcoming bar, add to the hotel's appeal, although the dining options' pricing has led to some concerns regarding value.

Went for Mother’s Day. Was so expensive for a roast dinner, I think the most I’ve ever paid and considering you had to preorder we were expecting top quality it was just NOWHERE near the quality expected. Staff seemed slightly flustered. Shame because the pub is lovely. Roast should have been 17pounds MAX

Visited for Mother’s Day and had been looking forward to trying this place out for a while despite the surprisingly high prices. Food was underwhelming for the price point. For a £25+ roast dinner you expect it to be A-grade, however with just two measly slices of beef, a squashed Yorkshire pudding, dry roasties and some watery veg, we did not feel as if we got our monies worth. We also ordered salt & pepper squid which was £12. Portion size was small, squid was rubbery and was served up with a pot of standard sweet chilli sauce. Have had much nicer squid at other resultants for a fraction of the price. There was also a selection popular beers on tap that were unavailable as they had run out which was disappointing. Saying that, sticky toffee pudding was great and probably one of the best we’ve had for a while.

Group met for evening meal - food was average, venison was very small, other dishes OK but nothing special - fairly average in cooking and presentation. But then received £100 car parking fine letter two weeks later - this WAS waived after a phone call BUT at no point did any of the staff ask us if we had parked in their car park. There IS signage BUT hard to read when entering the narrow archway (signs are high up and unlit at night while one is making sure not to scrape car or wing mirrors) or in darkness to side of bright floodlights, partially obscured by foliage. Why don’t staff routinely ask customers as a courtesy if they’ve registered? If one walks into restaurant from car park, why not put a sign there reminding one to register? Or is this a money-making tactic? Also beware entering from front - cars sometimes mistakenly exit that way instead of leaving from rear. Again there IS a sign for this but it’s behind wall (round corner) on right when entering and not obvious at night. Sadly we’ll hesitate before coming again because this car park “fine” left a sour taste. It is also telling that management only respond to positive reviews here, never addressing complaints. This could be a much better pub & restaurant but the manager needs to listen to customer comments to see what you need to do to improve!

We try to tell as many customers as possible about the Parking System, There are signs both externally in the Car Park and in the Bar Areas and Restaurant. As you mentioned we cancel 100% of fines for valid customers. The Parking system is not there to penalise actual guests and does not generate any revenue for ourselves. Many Thanks, Matthew Coupland Manager

I decided to pop in for a bite to eat with a friend. I hadn’t booked, but the car park was empty and there were several empty tables. Whilst there I spoke to 3 separate members of staff. Our waitress was lovely and I was happy to leave her a tip even though the fish and chips we chose had been below par. Two weeks later I received a £100 parking fine. I telephoned the pub to sort it out. The staff member I spoke to agreed to waive the fine. However, she was argumentative, stating that there were plenty of signs around indicating we needed to sign in. I explained that not one person had mentioned this when we were there and she continued to argue her case. Thankfully I will never have occasion to visit Wendover again, but if you are thinking of going to this pub, please be aware of the parking situation.

Hi Jocelyn, There are indeed plenty of signs in the car park as well as signed upon entering the bar & restaurant stating the customers need to register their vehicles. We try to tell as many customers as possible about the Parking System, but being on the High Street most people just walk to the site so do not need this information. As you mentioned we cancel 100% of fines for valid customers. The Parking system is not there to penalise actual guests. Many Thanks, Matthew Coupland Manager

We met our daughter and hubby as well as an 8 month grandson and a Labrador. They were moving house and this was the night in between. We were there to baby and dogsit. We stayed 3 nights, they only 1. It was fabulous. All the staff were great. The food very good value and the rooms very comfortable. The bar, restaurant and hotel were always busy.

Room Tip: Booking your car in for your stay, however short, was essential. No lifts that we could see.

A difficult one to review. The food was excellent and well presented although the aubergine dish a little bland. The ambience is 'olde' world and great but it is pricey and the service very ordinary at best so wouldn't be my first choice again.

Visited Wendover with my husband as I was attending a course at No2 Pound street. From the moment we walked in to this lovely, quintessential English pub we were blown away by the friendliness and warm welcome from the staff. There is a small reception area at the bar where another couple were checking in, while we waited we were offered a drink from the bar.. much appreciated after a long journey. We were shown to our room which was gorgeous, even a little greetings card awaited wishing us a lovely stay and complementary sloe gin for a little tipple! We ate in the restaurant on the first night where once again we were met with the most friendly and super efficient staff. We spent the entire weekend here and to summarise, this inn demonstrated hospitality at its finest, it is clear that the ethos and high standards are passed on to all members of staff; An absolutely lovely stay, we will be returning most definitely.

Lovely clean quiet hotel. Were they really feather pillows? FAB. Very grateful for a warm room on a nippy January evening.Beautifully modernized coaching inn. Saw a few rooms as I went with the idea of checking it out for a family get together, have booked! The bar has an open log fire and relaxed feel about it. Great location in the centre of Wendover. Nicely poached eggs freshly cooked for my breakfast with gluten free toast. Gluten free meal on arrival. I booked a small room, if I visited as a single again I would go for a classic room , I need more space on my dressing table and to move around the bed with ease. It would probably be fine for a single business man. Thanks Lara and Ryan.

The food here is usually good (although expensive), but our last weekday lunchtime visit was disappointing. My ravioli (only six pieces with minimal sauce) was overcooked and dry. Not worth £15.50 or anything like that amount. Also, avoid eating in the bar if you're not a dog lover. This is obviously the place for dog walkers to go. The other meal (battered fish sandwich and chips) was good and service generally good, hence the average overall score.
