We joined a 2 days 1 night tour from Puno to Colca Caynon and stayed at this hostel in Chivay for the night. It’s a basic hostel which located quite close to the main square. The staff doesn’t speak English and we managed to communicate with him by using Google translate. There was no heater, hair dryer and even toilet paper in the room. They charge you extra money for any of the above (e.g. 5 soles for borrowing a hair dryer). Although the room was quite cold at night, it was clean and they provided several layers of blankets. We got bread, ham and cheese and a little bit of fruits for the breakfast.
We stayed here during a 2-nights-1-day tour in the Colca Canyon, and thought it was a good pick from the options afforded by the tour. We were quite wrong - the place went out of wifi in the mid-afternoon and, despite our repeated requests, it was never repaired until we checked out the other morning. There is no heater in the room, and you need to pay extra if you ask for it. So we basically spent a terrible cold night without internet. Not to mention the equally cold and uninteresting breakfast the next morning (and there is no milk or cream for the coffee). To give credit to the hostel, the bed was reasonably comfortable and clean, and the location is very central (but honestly you can't get too wrong about location given the town of Chivay is overall a tiny place).
Positive: Clean. Negative: On cold days it is very cold inside. They charge extra money for the heating. I've never heard of that before! And i've been travelling here and there. Personnel does not speak any foreign language, so without Spanish or Google translator you're lost. Bad service.
Rooms are clean and quiet. Heater is available for an additional 20 soles. It works great. I noticed that people at other, pricier, hotels have complained about the rooms being too cold. I turned up our heater until my wife complained about it getting too hot! Breakfast was provided in fixed servings rather than a buffet. The quantities were good and the serving staff were very nice. They speak a bit of English and were very welcoming.
This hotel was booked for us as part of a package tour from Puno of the Colca Canyon. It would be a good value at the price I saw on TripAdvisor. The staff was helpful and speaks some English. If the Chivay Chill bothers you, rent one of their heaters for 20 soles and get as warm as you want. It was not excessively cold without the heater but we rented it anyway. I set it so the room was a little too warm for the wife; it was easy to adjust, and of course I was obliged to turn it down. The breakfast setup is charming. It is not a buffet, but I had quite enough quantity and quality. I did not ask for more of anything so I don't know whether they would give seconds or not. The room was quiet except when a parade went by in the late afternoon-- not the hotel's fault. The lobby is small, but with a sitting room which facilitates meeting other travelers.…
