El Charabon exceeded all our expectations! The beauty of the ranch, with its endless rolling hills, eucalyptus trees, cattle, sheep, lamas and horses defies description. Our hosts Graciela and Jorge welcomed us into their home like family, while allowing us to enjoy the home (including cozy living room with massive fireplace) on our own time. We immensely enjoyed chatting with Graciela and Jorge, whether on horseback, touring the property or enjoying an outdoor lunch of delicious pasta, and learning about life on a ranch and life in Uruguay. They are truly one of a kind! Paola is a wonderful chef, cooking all manner of local cuisine, and sent us on our way with waistlines expanded. Diana is a lovely, enthusiastic assistant, who brought a smile to every meal. Our gaucho, Noel, is a superb horseman and guided us on rides throughout the property, including through a eucalyptus forest to an amazing view of the ocean. And the horses were so well-behaved. Words cannot describe the beauty and hospitality we enjoyed. Having traveled the world over, I can say without reservation that El Charabon is not to be missed. Can’t wait for our next visit!

Unfortunately our experience was not like the other reviews. We had such high expectations based on all the positive things people said on Trip Advisor. However the owners were absent which I think made all the difference as it is they who provide the setting, make guests feel welcome and involve them in the farm activities. They left a skeleton staff of the cook and a housekeeper to take care of us. They were very kind but as they could speak no English and we no Spanish, they could not take the place of the owners. They disappeared after serving food and were not to be seen until the next meal. The food was plentiful but rather bland for our taste and certainly the food we ate everywhere else in Uruguay was much better. The resident gaucho was sick but they pulled in a young gaucho to take me for a ride which was very nice. On the first night we were greeted by an awful smell of strong insect killer that had been liberally sprayed all over. It was so bad that we had to sleep on the sofas in the lounge of the main house. This was the nail in the coffin. So the next morning we decided to leave the estancia after only one night. We haven’t received an explanation for why the owners were away but my advice is to check beforehand that they will be on site during your stay - it will probably make or break your stay.

The best place to stay in Uruguay. Everybody is nice and welcoming. Food, horse riding, service... everything is perfect. The only regret is that we could not stay longer. We will be back for more. Mathias & Natacha

We fell in love with the hosts, staff and the estancia as soon we arrived. We were delighted with the kind hospitality extended to us and enjoyed the surroundings which allowed us to relax and unwind. We got a tour of the estancia and surrounding area from the hosts personally. It was so nice to see how much they loved their animals and land. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, and we really enjoyed the turn down service in the evening. The food was delicious, meticulously prepared and served with pride. We sat outside for lunch and afternoon tea, and inside for dinner and breakfast. We loved all the food - but the afternoon tea was such a luxurious indulgence! We swam in the pool, relaxed in the comfortable and beautiful surroundings and simply enjoyed the peacocks, charabons, lamas, etc. We did horseback riding in the morning and even got to help herd some of the cattle. It was a real privilege to be part of something so special. Staying here was the best part of our trip to Uruguay. We felt as though we were part of the family, yet our privacy was respected. I would highly recommend staying here and would return to Uruguay simply to stay here again.

This was the highlight of my trip to Uruguay. El Charabon is an absolutely beautiful property run by the most incredible, kind people. Jorge and Graciela were so welcoming and went out of their way to a make sure my experience was one to remember. I was travelling as a single guy from the States with limited Spanish-speaking skills. I was looking for something different as far as a travel experience, so why not ride horses with the gauchos in Uruguay? What I did not anticipate was how inviting this estancia would be. They made this guy feel like part of their family for the few days that I was there. The property is so relaxing with amazing views of the rolling hills and countryside. I was able to do everything I hoped and more. I helped Alejandro (resident gaucho) and his sons round up cattle and sheep, went to some beautiful, local beaches (i.e. no/little tourists), and ate some delicious traditional Uruguayan food (including a traditional BBQ). I travel all over the world, and I can say that this is one place I long to go back to. If you are looking for a fun, beautiful, unique Uruguayan experience, look no further!
