The Lodge arranged a private birding guide for me. I saw 18 species around the property (late afternoon) including the Turqoise-browed Motmot and Ferrigunous Pgymy-Owl! While eating in the open-air dining room you can watch the White-faced Capuchins at the feeders. I really liked the papas fritas (three types of fried potatoes). Otherwise, the food was healthy and perfectly adequate after hiking around in the heat. My cabin had comforting air-conditioning and a little red lizard visited in the garden bathroom. A fridge in the room might deserve a five-star review.
Despite me having to abandon my pre-paid visit to Hotel Cerro in April 2020 due to CV19 travel restrictions, the Hotel was kind enough to refund the cost of my booking in full, although not technically liable to do so. Much appreciated ! Andrew Crouch
Second time in CR and second time in this lodge. Since then they have built several new big rooms with AIRCO in a quiet area of their property. They have enlarged the deck and changed the feeder location for the birds. They have also an activity corner and a look-out tower to NP Carrara and … the ocean. Absolutely perfect place to stay. The rooms are beautiful, clean, spacious, with excellent and large bathrooms and very comfortable beds and AIRCO. The staff is ABSOLUTELY fantastic. Orelio and his wife were the chiefs of the kitchen: super breakfast with fresh fruit, yoghurt, Casado, and any kind of eggs. Lunch was à la carte and dinner most of the times in buffet with pork or chicken, fish, vegetables … and desert. Really SUPER. The ladie(s) at the reception desk. We were there when the Corona was messing up a bit. So, we ask if it would be possible to check-in online on the PC of the reception since I was keen on printing our tickets: of course, we could, no problem . This lodge is also famous for the macaws, and , they did not disappoint us: they were nearly every day there but also many other birds. Of course , there is also a pool. And the lodge is very close to the NP Carrara and Tarcoles, where the boat trips start. The view from the restaurant and the terrace could not be better. We did not want to leave. THANK YOU.…
Quirky open air bathroom took a bit of getting used to, but once I was sure that no-one could see me showering I got to rather like it. It's quite a long walk to some of the rooms, but the upside is that there is plenty to see as you go. For example the Macaws who don't keep quiet. There is a look-out tower which is perfect for spending a couple of hours bird watching. Don't forget to take water and sun cream. The Carara NP is good for a visit, as are the boat tours. If you are a birder try to avoid the ones that are only interested in the crocodiles. There is a lot of other wild life to see.If you have a car (or like hiking) turn right out of the hotel and follow the track down to the river. You may be rewarded with some spectacular birds etc
We came hoping to see Scarlet Macaws and were not disappointed. The property has nice birding on site and the Carara national park is nearby. The accommodations were clean and comfortable. We enjoyed the meals. The staff was friendly and helpful. A great visit.
