Hildur and Sverre Kjevik emigrated from Norway and unexpectedly fell in love with Black Rock Resort. In 1963 they purchased the family-run business because the serenity and beauty of the property reminded them of their Norweigian riverside farm. Their daughter, Karen, now carries on their dream by sharing Black Rock with visitors from all over the world.

Did a fall tour of Manitoulin. We wanted a spot to park our motorhome for a few days while we took our car to Tobermory to visit some family. This was the only park open in October. This park is meant for trailers so Karen said we could park our motorhome beside the septic field. While we were parking the ferry company called and our ferry in 2 hours was cancelled and we could go on the the ferry the next day. So i quess were staying the night. Karen ran a extension chord and electricity. I said i could pay cash , visa etc. She said oh lets square up when you get back from Tobermory. Went to get some food and were again called by the the ferry company and were told the next days ferries were cancelled. So at this point we made alternate plans. We went back to pack up the car on the motorhome to leave. Total stay, maybe 3 hours. My wife went to the dumpy office to tell Karen we would be leaving. Karen said 50$ !!... Generally most of our experiences in the Rv world have been friendly, i was disappointed to still find money grubbers like this around in this industry. in previous reviews i found similar experiences. but hey ... my fault i should of insisted up front that i wanted to know the cost. Ironic thing thing is that her name was Karen ! I have never done a review but for Karen i made an exception.

This place is a real gem. We stayed at one of the tent camp sites, and had a perfect little spot close to washrooms, showers, and a beautiful lake all in walking distance. Affordable and beautiful. Karen, the owner, was extremely helpful, friendly and accommodating. We will for sure be coming back!

We wanted to check out Manitoulin island and was able to book a cottage at Black Rock resort a couple of weeks prior to our trip. We chose this resort as it got a 4.3 rating on google reviews and the description on their website sounded like an ideal place. I have to begin by saying the website is deceiving, misleading and inaccurate. It says there is free wifi - which there isn’t and we only found out upon arrival, it describes the resort as rustic chic - which it isn’t, the resort is rustic, as in old and dated, but not chic, it says there is a private beach which is in fact a small area with sand and the rate I was quoted on the site was wrong and was listed lower than the actual cost. When we first arrived we were told the cottage we booked was going to be given to another customer - which we found very unprofessional. The key to the front door of our cottage was lost and Karen, the owner had to replace it the next day. The grounds were covered in goose poo all over the grounds which we were a bit grossed out by. There we’re new windows, new front door and appliances but the rest of the cottage was dated and old. There were stains on the sofas, the mattresses were old and dated. We were told we had to take all of our garbage back with us when we left which we were fine with, but we’re taken aback when we were told we had to take all recycling back with us as well except for beer cans and empty alcohol bottles. We found that to be a big turn off and a bit greedy. I have to say the lake is beautiful and the view from our cottage was pristine and It was very quiet and peaceful. However I question the high rating Black Rock Resort is given based on my experience.

Talked to most locations on the island before settling here. great website, and great experience. first timers and long timers in our group and campsite was perfect. Myself, my sister and brother and law can attest that my nieces had an incredible time.

My fam-jam (5adult + 5littles) visited _Black Rock_ cottage resort on Manitoulin Is. for LabourDay weekend. Here are my most memorable memories: 1. Excellent beach [includes docks, sandy play park and warm waters !!] 2. Old-fashion-feel cabins, also campsites - each with electricity/firepit - our lodge had plumbing and comfy beds! 3. HOLYmolee views!!!! 4. So many Monarch butterflies and they.were.huge {...saved the best for last,} 5. Owner and Manager lady: Totally 'not gonna spoil ya and u'll like it' Lol okay there's always a critique so here goes --> Looks like the place could use a new vibe i.e. Hostelling International(?) And/or... There's a church in my town that's been newly built, a l l by volunteers and a l l donation! #workforstay (?) We stayed here this past long weekend. My mother, sister, here two children aged 4 & 6, as well as my cousin, her husband and their three kids, 4, 6 & 8. My family stayed in a cabin as my cousin stayed on a lot in their tent trailer. We all enjoyed our time. Relatively nice grounds, despite goose poop on every inch of beach and grass area. The last night however, my sister requested the owner come and turn on the stove in our cabin. My mother and I didn’t agree it needed to be on but she insisted. The owner let me know when I was ordering more wood. She told me she didn’t think it needed to be on, I agreed but joked my sister is easier to get along with if she gets her way. I took my wood and carried on. She came an hour or so later to turn the heater on. She was chatty but a little intrusive. I shrugged it off. She was unable to get it going and I told her not to worry about coming back, we had lot of extra blankets. Later that night my sister went to the office to ask again about the heater (I forgot to let her know she tried unsuccessfully). I didn’t know this happened. We were all sitting by the fire, a few of the kids included, when the owner drove up very aggressively into our site (at this point it was pitch black) and nearly ran over my cousins husband. She got off and started going on with my sister asking if there was going to be a problem because of the heater. My sister said she rudely told her at the office to take it up with her sister (me) since I’m the one that booked the cabin. She seemed very intoxicated, slurring her words and seemed to be trying to pick a fight with my sister. She was only being polite to me at this point. I told her I didn’t appreciate how she was speaking to my family and it would be best if she left. She said ‘what are you going to put a bad f&%king review on the internet now?’ To which I replied with, ‘I’m not much of an online review writer but I sure as heck will now!’ She was extremely rude and swearing in front of the kids, scaring all of us by driving up in the dark on her mower at 10pm. She only cared to be nice to the one ‘with the money’. I might have booked the cabin on my credit card but it was all shared, and that really should not have mattered at all. The unprofessionalism was jaw dropping. We will never return and I’ll tell everyone about the horrible treatment we received.

This is a zero frills property. Basically a collection of cabins on the side of a lake. The owner is an older woman who (I think) lives there with her daughter. You can usually find her trudging around the property doing random things. It worked for us as a home base when we went to do other things around the island. Do NOT stay here if you’re going to spend a lot of time indoors, it’s very rustic and gritty, with furniture from your grandparents’ house. There’s a rickety dock that I hope has been torn down by now, and is unusable. They sell firewood that is bone dry, so it’s burned up in a matter of minutes. That was annoying. But on the whole if you’re not picky and need a place to sleep, this’ll do. It’s also pretty close to the ferry, which made its many shortcomings worth it.

Response from ManitoulinBlackRock, General Manager at Black Rock Resort
Responded Mar 5, 2019
Thank you for your feedback! Karen, my mom, is doing her best to keep busy around the campground while her energy level continues to decline due to MS. We have had similar feedback from customers in the past regarding our indoor furnishings, over the past four years we have slowly upgraded our mattresses, living room furniture, and are currently working on bedroom and kitchen furniture. Approximately half our cottages are modern and half are outdated, we are slowly renovating them room by room as we can afford it. We do our best to have our prices reflect the individual cottage quality. I'm guessing you had one of our older cottages, if you let us know which one it was we will take your feedback into consideration as we prioritize our renovations! The docks are an extremely large investment, unfortunately, we will need to save up for a while before we get to that project - but we can't wait to get there. It sounds like you didn't have a chance to explore our cliff side hiking trail! We finished the rough trail last year and we are hoping to make it fully accessible in the future. We are trying to offer more outdoor activities to improve our guest experiences as we work on our upgrades, and because the back part of our property is very beautiful and unique. We are sorry to hear that your experience with us wasn't all you hoped it would be, but we are very happy that you enjoyed exploring Manitoulin Island.

We visited Manitoulin Island at the recommendation of a relative who highlighted the island's natural beauty and solitude. There is a lot of accommodation and it's spread across the island. We didn't have any preference so chose Black Rock for it's proximity to the ferry - it's about 10-15 minutes drive. Our cottage was very simple - 2 bedrooms, bathroom, small kitchen, living and dining area. It is very rustic so don't come expecting any frills. That said, the beds were comfortable and everything worked during our 3 night stay. It's also on a very pretty lake and we spent a lot of time relaxing on the grass out front as the nights were warm and long. You get what you pay for, and Black Rock was about right for the price. The whole place could certainly do with an overhaul, but part of it's charm is that it feels a bit forgotten. Much like Manitoulin Island itself. Since the trip I haven't met a Canadian who has ever visited! And if you get the chance, take the ferry from Tobermary - it's a fabulous experience, especially on a cloudless, sunny day.

Thank you for your feedback, Kate! We appreciate that you found as charming. We are upgrading and renovating as we go and as our customer experiences continue to improve we are able to do more reinvesting every year. We try to keep our prices a reflection of the quality we are able to provide. Manitoulin is definitely a hidden gem, we find it adds to the overall friendly experience and slow pace, which is why we love living here. We're happy to hear you enjoyed your stay on Manitoulin, and in Tobermory. If you're ever back on the island we hope you can come see the improvements we plan to make in the next few years!

Was on the island for work and wasn't able to call ahead for accommodations. Everything was booked that we tried and then I found this place! So happy we didn't settle for a cramped old motel room. For a very affordable price we had a 3 bedroom cabin, with full kitchen as well as BBQ outside and laundry facilities just a short walk from the cabin. The view from the front deck was nothing less then spectacular! The lady who runs if came and sat with us that evening to visit. The quiet time on the dock in the evening takes away pretty much a months worth of stress and the water is so clear! I was sad to leave the place when it was time to roll out. I hope to return someday.

Tammy, we truly appreciate your positive feedback! We rarely receive complaints about the three bedroom cottages and are pleased that we didn't fail to impress you! The tranquility of Manitoulin and our property definitely facilitates relaxation and stress relief. We love that you can walk around and find people to have a meaningful conversation with, or that you can explore and find a peaceful place to listen to the water, and the relaxing sounds of birds and frogs. We are happy you enjoyed your time and hope we see you again someday!

We thought this place would be nice for Camping. Not so!! Camp sites were small and electrical outlet spotty. There were 7 of us camping with two tents, Therefore I was charged double the price for one site. If I had known that beforehand I would have used two sites. No discount for crappy electricity!! Showers were small and bathrooms dirty. No campfire as it has been a dry season as well. All around very disappointed!!
