Hildur and Sverre Kjevik emigrated from Norway and unexpectedly fell in love with Black Rock Resort. In 1963 they purchased the family-run business because the serenity and beauty of the property reminded them of their Norweigian riverside farm. Their daughter, Karen, now carries on their dream by sharing Black Rock with visitors from all over the world.

The cottage that we rented had spectacular views of the lake. This was affordable and a great stop during our trip around Georgian Bay. The owner was very friendly, and we really enjoyed our visit. We hope to be back on Manitoulin Island again soon.

This is a very affordable, lake-view property.
They have a dock right next to the cottages and the view in the morning is just mind blowing.

The cottage we stayed was comfortable, though the furnishings were a bit dated.
But the kitchen was well equipped with utensils [no grocery], some cutlery was available and the place was clean overall.

Since there are no grocery stores near by, I'd suggest you get a good camping set for preparing your food. Also pack any personal care stuff as we didnt find any complimentary soap or shampoos. The sheets were clean but was a bit old - so if you're a stickler for your bedroom ambiance, carry something with you.

Other than this, the cottage was totally value for money and we'd definitely visit again.

We enjoyed our recent visit to Black Rock Resort on Manitoulin Island. The cabin was clean and well equipped. It is set on the end of a farm road on South Bay about 5 km from the town of Manitowaning. The campground includes both cabins and trailers. The swimming included clear water in the bay although the bottom is weedy. A swimming raft is available.

It was a great spot for us to spend some time.

The long-time owner Karen was very welcoming.

It was a first visit to the island. We will be back. We recommend Black Rock.

We wanted to check out Manitoulin island and was able to book a cottage at Black Rock resort a couple of weeks prior to our trip. We chose this resort as it got a 4.3 rating on google reviews and the description on their website sounded like an ideal place. I have to begin by saying the website is deceiving, misleading and inaccurate. It says there is free wifi - which there isn’t and we only found out upon arrival, it describes the resort as rustic chic - which it isn’t, the resort is rustic, as in old and dated, but not chic, it says there is a private beach which is in fact a small area with sand and the rate I was quoted on the site was wrong and was listed lower than the actual cost.

When we first arrived we were told the cottage we booked was going to be given to another customer - which we found very unprofessional. The key to the front door of our cottage was lost and Karen, the owner had to replace it the next day. The grounds were covered in goose poo all over the grounds which we were a bit grossed out by. There we’re new windows, new front door and appliances but the rest of the cottage was dated and old. There were stains on the sofas, the mattresses were old and dated.

We were told we had to take all of our garbage back with us when we left which we were fine with, but we’re taken aback when we were told we had to take all recycling back with us as well except for beer cans and empty alcohol bottles. We found that to be a big turn off and a bit greedy.

I have to say the lake is beautiful and the view from our cottage was pristine and It was very quiet and peaceful. However I question the high rating Black Rock Resort is given based on my experience.

This place is a real gem. We stayed at one of the tent camp sites, and had a perfect little spot close to washrooms, showers, and a beautiful lake all in walking distance. Affordable and beautiful.

Karen, the owner, was extremely helpful, friendly and accommodating. We will for sure be coming back!

Did a fall tour of Manitoulin. We wanted a spot to park our motorhome for a few days while we took our car to Tobermory to visit some family. This was the only park open in October. This park is meant for trailers so Karen said we could park our motorhome beside the septic field.
While we were parking the ferry company called and our ferry in 2 hours was cancelled and we could go on the the ferry the next day. So i quess were staying the night. Karen ran a extension chord and electricity. I said i could pay cash , visa etc. She said oh lets square up when you get back from Tobermory. Went to get some food and were again called by the the ferry company and were told the next days ferries were cancelled. So at this point we made alternate plans. We went back to pack up the car on the motorhome to leave. Total stay, maybe 3 hours. My wife went to the dumpy office to tell Karen we would be leaving. Karen said 50$ !!... Generally most of our experiences in the Rv world have been friendly, i was disappointed to still find money grubbers like this around in this industry. in previous reviews i found similar experiences. but hey ... my fault i should of insisted up front that i wanted to know the cost. Ironic thing thing is that her name was Karen ! I have never done a review but for Karen i made an exception.

Talked to most locations on the island before settling here. great website, and great experience. first timers and long timers in our group and campsite was perfect. Myself, my sister and brother and law can attest that my nieces had an incredible time.

The correct address is 35 Cowans Side Rd.
Reservation went smoothly.
The location is good.
It was no instructions about the facility upon arrival.
Poor privacy in the campground area.
The recycling, compost area and washrooms need improvement.
See pics attached.

Thank you for your review. We are glad that you enjoyed the beautiful location of our resort. Thank you for posting pictures. We always enjoy seeing the resort from the eyes of our guests. The address is 35 Leask Lane which is located at the end of Cowans Side Road if that helps to clear up and confusion. Thank you for the feedback and we will try to ensure better guidance especially for the camp ground upon arrival. We appreciate your comments about the recycling and compost areas. This is new to us as well. Our municipality recently changed the guidelines for recycling and we are trying to get everything sorted based on our new regulations. It is still a work in progress and we hope that you will join us again next year and see the improvements that we are making.

We stayed for two nights in August 2013. Our cabin was exceptionally clean and had a great kitchen with every pot, pan, and cooking utensil we could need. The beds were not exceptionally comfortable but we still slept very well.

I am severely allergic to mosquitoes and I did not get bit once during my stay, not even when we were out until 10:30 p.m.!

The grounds are gorgeous and while the cottages are very close together, it was still quiet. It was clear that other families had been to this resort many times and would keep coming back.

We rented a canoe for the afternoon and it was only $20. We also went for a nice 5k run on nearby roads.

We'd definitely go back!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We appreciate the feedback. Glad to hear you enjoyed your stay with us. Yes we do have many families that return every year some are even second and third generations. This is the first year we have offered the canoe rental and we are hoping to expand and have more rental options for next year. Hopefully we see you again next summer. It was a pleasure meeting you.

We stayed here this past long weekend. My mother, sister, here two children aged 4 & 6, as well as my cousin, her husband and their three kids, 4, 6 & 8. My family stayed in a cabin as my cousin stayed on a lot in their tent trailer. We all enjoyed our time. Relatively nice grounds, despite goose poop on every inch of beach and grass area.

The last night however, my sister requested the owner come and turn on the stove in our cabin. My mother and I didn’t agree it needed to be on but she insisted. The owner let me know when I was ordering more wood. She told me she didn’t think it needed to be on, I agreed but joked my sister is easier to get along with if she gets her way. I took my wood and carried on. She came an hour or so later to turn the heater on. She was chatty but a little intrusive. I shrugged it off. She was unable to get it going and I told her not to worry about coming back, we had lot of extra blankets.

Later that night my sister went to the office to ask again about the heater (I forgot to let her know she tried unsuccessfully). I didn’t know this happened. We were all sitting by the fire, a few of the kids included, when the owner drove up very aggressively into our site (at this point it was pitch black) and nearly ran over my cousins husband. She got off and started going on with my sister asking if there was going to be a problem because of the heater. My sister said she rudely told her at the office to take it up with her sister (me) since I’m the one that booked the cabin. She seemed very intoxicated, slurring her words and seemed to be trying to pick a fight with my sister. She was only being polite to me at this point. I told her I didn’t appreciate how she was speaking to my family and it would be best if she left. She said ‘what are you going to put a bad f&%king review on the internet now?’ To which I replied with, ‘I’m not much of an online review writer but I sure as heck will now!’

She was extremely rude and swearing in front of the kids, scaring all of us by driving up in the dark on her mower at 10pm. She only cared to be nice to the one ‘with the money’. I might have booked the cabin on my credit card but it was all shared, and that really should not have mattered at all. The unprofessionalism was jaw dropping.

We will never return and I’ll tell everyone about the horrible treatment we received.
