We loved our stay at Hotel Sonia! Every member of staff went “above and beyond” and were so welcoming and helpful. We had the most amazing view from our beautiful balcony of Mount Etna and could not have hoped for anything more perfect! We looked forward to breakfast each day as the food was fresh, delicious and plentiful! The restaurant veranda also looks over the volcano and added to the first class experience.

What a hotel this is. Walking into our Etna View Suite literally blew our socks off - the hotel website photos do not do it justice at all! Absolutely enormous room with an amazing vaulted ceiling, two bathrooms and two balconies, one with the most mind-blowing view of Mount Etna. There were gorgeous hand-painted murals on the walls. There was a fridge with water (2 Euros each) and two televisions, one of which did not work but we weren't bothered about this at all. The only other issue was the curtains only closed half way but we rectified this the best we could. We also felt an information pack would have been helpful in the room but every single member of staff on reception were so amazingly helpful that it wasn't the end of the world. The bathrooms were very traditional but the showers were lovely and powerful. It is a very traditional hotel and is filled with fascinating antique furniture (we were told the owner is an avid collector) and the entire hotel is filled with amazing and quirky pieces. If you're after modern and uncluttered clean lines do not stay here...! Breakfast was fine, the best parts being delicious coffee and blood-orange juice, both yummy. Be warned though there is a major wasp problem out on the terrace so stay inside! There is plenty of free parking available and the bus stop is right outside for the bus down into Taormina at just 3 Euros. The walk up into Castelmola itself isn't too bad at all, a few steps and a slight uphill walk and you're there in 5 minutes. We can't recommend this hotel enough. Such good value aswell, we know that comparable hotels in the area are twice the price. Thank you Villa Sonia!

Myself and two friends have just got back from a long weekend staying at Hotel Villa Sonia and cannot thank the staff enough for a lovely stay. Nicholas was very lovely and friendly behind the bar, reception were more than happy to help us organise trips, dinner reservations and taxis and Maria made us feel very welcome. We stayed in room 503 which was massive and had the most beautiful views looking out onto Mount Etna. We ate at La Caverna just a short walk from the hotel and the hawaiian pizza was amazing, we also arranged transfers down to the beach and our taxi to and from the airport. Thank you so much for a lovely relaxing weekend to escape!

We stayed for 4 nights and although the location was good (high with great views of Taormina) we found that the set up was a bit dated and the staff are not used to non-Italian guests. The main gripe we had with the Hotel was that the 'free wifi' did not actually work. The manager Miriam) explained that no-one ever had a problem and the staff (David in particular - stupid individual) said it was our equipment - IPad (latest version, Mac books and a Huwaei lap top plus phones. They took money for the wifi and advertised it as free. The fact was that the scrimped on having a half-decent router/wifi connection because Italian guests use their own data. They offered us a cable to connect to their router physically but we all know that nowadays modern computers do not have such connections. Whilst standing at reception I was able to connect and my wife had to do all her conference calls in stuffy, non-air-conditioned noisy surroundings because the 'free' wifi connection did not extend to our rooms which were 7 metres away. The simple fact is that Hotel Sonia is dishonest about its claims that it has wifi as it suggests that you can use the wifi at the Hotel and yet it is only available in very restricted parts of the Hotel (iee behind or in front of the reception counter). I also reject the suggestion that i am lying about my inability to connect or that our equipment was faulty. We had been travelling for 5 weeks in Italy and had wifi everywhere. The simple truth is that Miriam and her husband are cutting corners as there is no reason not to have good wifi in a Hotel unless you are cutting corners. This is dishonest and misleading. Miriam also set up a restaurant called the Caverna which is owned b y Hotel Sonia. Astonishingly we had to send food back twice as it was stone cold. I have never had frozen grilled Octopus before and I hope never to have it again. We were not charged for it but cold grilled swordfish, cold cooked pasta etc does not do it for me. The Prosecco was good value and the salad was suitably cold. Never again!!!
