It was most pleasant to stay with Robert and Susan at The Artists' Colony in Smithfield, Free State. The historic cottage was well decorated and equiped with all the conveniences one would exprect. They are well prepared to deal with the unending interuptions to the town's water supply. The highlight of the overnight stay was definitely Susan' s cooking and...

We decided to extend our trip back to Johannesburg and stayed here for a night. Robert was helpful and accommodating, when I called to make a reservation, but when I enquired about dinner, he advised us that they were full for dinner. After reviewing several of the other options and seeing that most of the reviews on the Artists' Colony...

Stayed at the Artists Colony on several occasions and always the same quality accommodation. Excellent dinner and breakfast and no need to look elsewhere for meals. Secure off street parking and wonderful hospitality.

This was my fourth visit to this charming B&B, ideally situated when you travel through the Eastern Cape. Home cooked food by host Susan Jewell is quite delicious while husband Robert dashes between the kitchen and dining room serving the guests. The breakfasts are hearty and very enjoyable. En suite bathrooms have both a shower and a bath. Crisp white...

What an amazing experience, the hosts were friendly and welcoming, the accommodation was incredibly quaint and beautiful. The facilities were just perfect and the breakfast home cooked and delicious. The town is also quite cute! An absolute must when travelling to the Eastern Cape.

I spent two nights here on my way to and from Hogsback. Wonderful hosts Robert and Susan Jewell cater to your every whim. I had my two Miniature Schnauzers with me who were made to feel welcome too. Clean, very comfortable spacious bedrooms with old fashioned ball and claw enamel baths, a real treat. Breakfasts exceptional, try the sheep's yoghurt,...

This is an ideal place to stop when traveling from Jozi to East London or vice versa. The rooms are full of memorabilia, the beds are comfortable and the bathrooms are quaint but still function well. The breakfast was splendid. Dinners can also be arranged with prior notice.
