If looking for a place to stay in Monteverde, I would recommend the Family Trapp Hotel. The rooms offer lovely glassed in seating areas, which gave us the feeling of being in a treehouse. We enjoyed watching the various birds and the white face monkeys swinging from the trees.

I showed up walking with a cane because of an injury and they were quick to accommodate me to a room that did not require stairs. Because the breakfast room was uphill a distance staff offered to get me anything I wanted for breakfast and let me eat in the dining room. While I did not take them up on this offer, it demonstrates the level of customer service they maintain.

We were close enough to the national forest to allow my partner a good walk. Roads are a bit rough getting there but much better than some other places we have been in Costa Rica.

If I were looking for a hotel in Monteverde again, I would definitely go back.

This is a beautiful, elegant hotel, located right at the entrance of the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. The builders made use of local wood, tile flooring - materials in the whole complex are lovely, warm and very well maintained. Our room is large, comfortable and looks out onto a lush, private garden. The bar and restaurant, where we have enjoyed Happy Hour and dinner every evening, is well decorated with wood and luxurious fabrics, has a warm and welcoming feel to it. Breakfast, which is included, is a full and well prepared buffet. The front desk staff helped arrange daily activities, tours easily and efficiently. If there was one wish, it would be for better clothes storage (there's no place to hang clothes and only one drawer in the dresser). I can't say enough good things about this fine hotel, and I would stay here again and again. I happily recommend Hotel Trapp Family.

The room was large with a beautiful view. The bathroom was cute and shower large however the shower head was lacking water pressure. I really liked how they had all these eco conservation notes in the room. At night it was definitely colder, I didn't see an AC or heating unit but they give you so many blankets which kept me nice and toasty. the tv had some english channels which was great for me to keep up with the news. The windows were a bit loud at night but it did not keep me awake. The hotel restaurant had great service and the food was wonderful too with a really nice atmosphere. the receptionists were next level and their service was so genuine and great. they booked a few activities for us with ease and we trusted them. you will not be disappointed if you stay here. the lodge is a bit too far to walk to town but you can easily call a $10 taxi or take their shuttle bus that leaves every hour till 4

We spent two nights in a mountain room. We liked the location and the food was both varied and tasty, so we had all our meals at the hotel. The walk up to the mountain rooms did get tiring as we were often buffetted by wind and rain even though the walk is covered.

Speaking of walks, I would not recommend walking to the reserve from Trapp as it is a narrow winding road and we did not see anyone walking while we were there.

The room was very nice and there is a heater on the wall that may be new. We liked room 20 a lot.

At first we were very happy with our spacious room from the highest point in the hotel with a view across the valley but that was before we discovered how cold and damp it was. We were given a heater but it was too small to make much of a difference and our clothes and bath towels remained damp for our entire stay. We ate in the restaurant where the service was excellent and the food was good and reasonably priced. However, the breakfast room was a cross between a green house and school canteen. It was bleak and totally lacking in atmosphere. The food was mediocre: very little variety of fresh fruit compared to other places we’d stayed. The displays of plastic fruit did little to compensate for this! We did enjoy being so close to the cloud forest and visiting the humming bird garden where we were visited by a coati family. Overall we were rather disappointed with our stay which caused us to look at previous reviews. Unfortunately these largely reflected our opinions. Guests have been raising the same issues, that concerned us, for at least two years but the owners and management do not seem to have learnt from what are the well meant and constructive criticisms of their customers.

We experienced the best of Monteverde accommodations when considering location, room comfort, cleanliness, accommodating staff and cost. Our room (#17) was a fantastic room with a seating area overlooking the cloud forest, two king beds, shower/toilet and sink. This is Monteverde, electricity is at a premium, so don’t expect the coffee maker, in room refrigerator or a lot of options to plug in our devises. We ate breakfast twice and dinner once on the grounds and thoroughly enjoyed the food and service (thanks Maria), and the Happy Hour(s) were just that, as we enjoyed talking with the staff as they practiced their English and we our Spanish. English is easily understood and used throughout the compound if you accept it is not their first language. The hotel will book you into any of the attractions around (get Rodrigo Solano to guide you in the cloud forest) and arrange transportation if necessary. You’re going to be outside of town, but Monteverde itself doesn’t have a lot of shops and you really need to go to Santa Elena if you want to hang out with other tourists. The staff does not expect tips, but we provided some to the staff as they were so good.

Quiet, clean, well-decorated, but be aware that getting to your room might, depending on the room, require climbing quite a steep path. While the path is well-lit and paved, it might still present a bit of a challenge to the aged or infirm. Beds are quite comfortable. Lots of hot water.

The staff, especially the front desk, are very friendly, very efficient and super helpful. They provide great advice on things to do and see, and will make the arrangements for you.

On the downside, Monteverde is not an area one visits for gastronomy. The hotel restaurant and bar are good but not great, with fairly bland selections and a limited wine list. The service is good.

Lastly, it should be noted that getting there was NOT half the fun. Road signs are not intuitive in Costa Rica – get a *good* map before coming (our GPS didn’t work very well for some reason). The roads getting into the area, while not especially dangerous, are certainly no better than they have to be – stretches of potholed gravel alternating with ones of seriously potholed asphalt, all twists, turns and steep hills. It’s worth it, though. Just get a 4x4 and build a long drive into your plans.

Once there, pat yourself on the back, for the roads get better and life begins – this area is something only the very lucky are privileged enough to see. The hotel is a good base for it.

We stayed here recently in order to visit the cloudforest. The hotel is located 5km up the hill above Santa Elena and close to the entrance to the Monteverde cloudforest park. We had a big, comfortable room, but the supply of hot water was intermittent. A good free wi-fi signal is available. A nice breakfast is provided and the restaurant served a good choice of nice dishes for dinner. However, there is very little to do other than visit the cloudforest or take a taxi down into Santa Elena.

Excellent service and cleanliness. Maybe a little dated but comfy bed and spacious room. We were in the rooms at the back with a nice view. It was very windy and quite cold so we asked for a heater which was provided, so we were very comfortable. There was a small menu for dinner and lunch but it was all well cooked and well presented. I think 2 night stay and meals worked well, personally any longer and I would go into town to eat for a change at 10 dollars each way. There isn’t a pool but it was too cold for that!

We stayed at Trapp Family Lodge for three nights (Superior room overlooking the garden). You might need to get a taxi to get down to the town (around 6 km to Santa Elena); on the other hand, if you are aiming to visit the famous Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve (plus Hummingbird garden), this hotel is situated very close. Our room was spacious, clean; with big, comfortable beds and well positioned chairs to enjoy the view.
We opted to have dinner in their own restaurant – twice – all dishes delicious and nicely presented; breakfast offer consists of selection of fruits and three different options, fresh and tasty (with added bonus of spotting our first agouti in the garden below the breakfast room).
Both staff at the reception and waiters during our breakfast/ dinner were very competent, approachable and polite.
We visited the nature reserve twice (guided day and night walk – both highly recommended); took a Sky-tram (slightly overpriced) and enjoyed ‘a trapiche’ tour, learning a lot about coffee, cocoa beans and sugar cane production.
Monteverde Cloud Forest area is a truly special, magical place and definitely well-worth visiting … thank you for providing such a welcoming base for all our explorations there!
